Australia Day today!

Break out your billies, and slap some vegie on your toast, because it's Australia Day!

For all my fellow Aussies, I say relax, have a good time, and crack open a cold one to salute all things Oz! I hope you all have a bonzer day!

Spent yesterday just fine: helped my stepfather clean up below the house a bit, and to shift some building materials; watched an episode of Blake's 7 on DVD (season 2); finished the first draft of an essay; went for dinner of snags, dog's eyes, lamingtons, beer and wine; then watched an episode of Kommissar Rex before going to bed. A very pleasant day all told.

So what is Australia Day all about? Did someone sign some important paper this day many years ago? I guess I could google it, but it is more fun to hear it explained from an actual Aussie.
How do you celebrate it? Any fixed traditions, or is it up to every individual to decide how to spend the day?

BTW - Happy Australia Day!

To answer your first question, here is some info from Australian National Days:

"Australia Day - 26 January

"Australia Day commemorates the beginning of settlement in Australia, when Governor Arthur Phillip landed at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. In 1838, the fiftieth anniversary of the landing, it was proclaimed a public holiday. Previous to that, as early as 1817 or 1818, there were celebrations in Sydney. In 1931 the name Australia Day was adopted nationally (it had been known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day).

"Until Australia's bicentenary in 1988, the holiday was held on the first Monday following 26 January in order to have a long weekend celebration. However, in 1988 it was held on the actual date, Tuesday 26 January. This practice has continued since."

To answer your second:

although there are events planned all over Australia, it is up to the individual to celebrate as he or she sees fit. I celebrated by working a bit, and relaxing a bit.

I had to play Aussie songs in the park with the band, in the full uniform, (ARGHH! long sleeve white shirt, red vest and balck pants) In the sun. So that sucked. After that not much happened.

Click go the shears refers to sheep-shearing, as our wool industry has been a major aspect of our culture and economy since before the Federation. Indeed, we developed the finest wool-bearing sheep, the Merino, here in Oz.

Home among the Gum Trees isn't exactly traditional, but it is a favourite Australian song for many. The chorus goes, in part:

Give me a home among the gum trees
with lots of plum trees
A sheep or two
And a kangaroo

I can't remember the rest. It was used as the basis for the theme song of Burke's Backyard, a supposed gardening show that ended up less garden and more lifestyle. Or, as I like to say, less shinola, more sh*t.

Hope this helps clarify a few of them titles for ya!

a dog's eye is rhyming slang for meat pie.

So dog's eye and dead horse is an Aussie favourite!

No, I didn't.

I am ashamed to admit that I only know the first verse, when, to be a patriotic Aussie, I shouldn't know even that!

For all those that didn't understand, Dog's eyes and dead horse is pies and sauce. Ghyle, I barely know any of the words of the national anthem as i'm usually playing the music. (its very hard to sing while playing a trumpet)

Ghyle, It was good that someone else asked my questuon, about the "Dogs eye". I hope that your holiday went great, I remember the going under the house part. But the pie, would sound so much better with a different name, "dead horse", argh!!!

You see, Kesal, they got to you at a very early age, and almost made you one of their pod people. You can tell pod people from ordinary Aussies: they're proud to be merchant bankers, and they quaff latte or frappe in copious quantities. They are also unaware--totally--that us regular Joes know what prats drive off-road vehicles solely on the road, too.

Beware the pod people, Kesal, beware!
