Same here... Also in Dragonsinger....

I think I am due for a Menolly re-read with Dragondrums.

Hello,
Resident lurker just adding my two cents, ... after /finally/ getting around to making an account. :p

I voted other, because I'd have to say my favorite char is Sorka. I know she's only in one book(Possibly two, if you count Dragonsblood), but I always enjoyed her as a character, and felt she isn't just a strong woman, but a very maternal woman, fit for being the first Weyrwoman of Pern. Not to mention, she built the very thing the rest of the dragonriders live by, and is remembered in history by her gold dragon. Also, Dragonsdawn is my favorite book from the series.

Close behind her is Robinton/Menolly equally, and then I'd say Lessa. In that order. Possibly Tai, too... Without the whole telekinesis thing, that just weirds me out. 0.o I enjoy the strong lower colors(Green/blue), that hold their own. Mirrim just bothers me because she so "Rawr". >.>

Anyways... Back to lurking. ^^

Robinton. Unquestionably Robinton. When I was only a little girl and I read the books, I got the most magnificent crush on him, and I still have it. He's lovely and brilliant. What can I say? He's Robinton.

Why is Ruth not a choice ;(. He is my favorite character; strange and entirely different from any other of his race, but at the same time he could care less about his differences. Jaxom on the other hand... I don't really think Jaxom by himself makes it into my favorite characters list, but with Ruth he would make it.

Edit: Forgot this was from 9th pass.

Some of the dolphins were nice, Afro and Kib for instance, but they were rather one dimensional. However T'lion makes it onto my favorites since he ends up working with them regularly.

I wish Anne would write more about the dolphins. I loved the dolphins being added to the PERN.

I am the one who gave Kibby her on screen name. I gave her her real life name too for that matter.

She's saying that she likes F'lar because of the way he treats Gemma and that he is idealistic and intelligent who doesn't want power for power's sake but to save Pern. And Fandarel because he has a passion for science (which I agree with asna ) She's saying that she maybe just likes hotheads.

Not everyone speaks English as a first language Weyrbrat. I work in an office with a group of people who speak spectacular English, yet I'm the only one with English as their first language. I wish I could speak Dutch a fraction as well as they speak English (and more).

Welcome Asna! It's great to meet you. Why don't you pop into the welcome thread?

Kasia is right.
Reading the books in Polish isn't a problem. The more I live out of the UK, the more I realise how hard English is .
Hans knows more about the quality of translations than I do. My language skills are not quite good enough to read them in any language over than English yet.
There is a topic here about the translation of Dragon Flight (Hans! What's it called in Polish?) and the different interpretations different translators gave to the line.

On some forums people are attacked pretty quickly if they don't post clearly in English with proper spelling and grammar, as people assume they're just being lazy. Here we try to give people the benefit of the doubt as there are so many reasons why someone might not be able to post with perfect language, including learning disabilities and non-native speakers. Usually it pays off and we add a great new member.

Asna, welcome to MoM! If you want, you can go introduce yourself in the Welcome thread in the Cafe forum. It's interesting to learn that Kasia is a Polish name. As Edith said it is indeed the name Anne gave the character. I wonder if she knew it was Polish or if she created it on her own?

Well that what make MoM so fun. You can meet many people from around the world and chat, pick up bits and parts as you go along.

F'lar was a lot cool headed then his sire was, for it took a long time for him to wait to make his move, which turn out good in the long run.

I don't know why I did not remember this before (probably because he is only really a character in two of the books), but AIVAS beats all the other characters in the ninth pass by a mile. Inteligent, logical, scientific, slightly secrative, and a computer.

Hi Hans.
I had plans to return to Petra this past summer but the man who was the director of my dig died in February too late for me to apply for another dig.
Now that I am Mayor of Bellemeade I may not have the time to dig next Summer but I am looking into it.

I seem to be in the minority here but I went for Lessa.

I've always liked strong decisive characters, the ones who might panic or freak out a bit when faced with a problem but mostly keep it to themselves and quickly resort to thinking "Ok, what can I do about this, and how?" and then get on and do it instead of waiting for someone/thing else to sort everything out for them. Although it also helps a lot that she's intelligent enough to know what will actually work instead of jumping on some half-assed idea that's doomed to fail. Overall she's one of the more realistic hero's - the ones who become the hero (or heroine) because they're the ones who can and will solve the problem instead of just happening to be in the right/wrong place and suffering through it, or because the writer forced them into the role even though it doesn't suit them at all (not something I'm accusing Anne of doing, I'm talking about fiction in general).

She also doesn't seem overly bothered by rank to some extent, she just treats people as people - she'll talk politely to anyone and she'll tell anyone what needs to be done if it needs saying. She's probably lucky that no one can really outrank her, because I could see that getting her into a lot of trouble otherwise.

I think it's also part of the reason she was the one who Impressed Ramoth and why she's seen as one of the greatest Weyrwomen. She didn't see Ramoth as a dragon who must be awed and respected, and she didn't see a vicious scary monster coming at her - she just saw her as a baby who didn't know what was going on and needed someone to sort her out.

I voted for Lessa. I think out of everyone in the books she is my favorite because she loves watchwhers. She lived with the one at Rutha as a drudge to survive and cries when it dies accidentally. From that she knows she has no ties to Rutha and is ready to move on. She goes from the lowest on the planet to the most powerful woman on the planet and it effects her little. I see her as a "Down To Earth" type person and like the pp is nice to anyone that will be nice to her.

I also have to say Robinton.. In the 9th pass when he died I was so suprised, I cried for days. My husband was most shocked that I got that upset over "a character from a book." But I had to explain to him that Pern isn't "just a book..." He don't get it.
BTW..Robinton likes watchwhers too.
I don't know what it is with the watchwhers but I think they pick good people to love.

You probably already have, but if you haven't you need to read Todd's books. I think he must have a thing for the watchwhers too because they feature quite heavily in those books, along with people who like them.

Also the Pern series is one of the rare cases where I almost always cry when a main character dies, no matter why or when (doesn't matter if they die of old age, in bed surrounded by family and friends or in a horrible accident), and it also doesn't seem to matter how many times I've read it. It always has me in tears.

(Warning: Dragonsblood Spoiler)
It can make things quite awkward - recently I've been doing most my reading on trains, and I was on one when I read Sorka's death in Dragonsblood for the first time. I got a lot of funny looks when one minute I was just sat there reading and the next I was in tears.

That killed me too; one of my hopes since I read Dragonsdawn and The Second Weyr was to see more of those characters, then I got to that part in Dragonsblood and went No! That was not what I meant!
