I don't know why I started to check this out but . . .

According to the stats at the bottom of the home page, the Board has had 1627 members over the years, and we currently have 24 ACTIVE members.

BUT: according to the membership listings there are 1171 members with "inactive " under their name; thus leaving 456 who are therefore "active".

How come the discrepancy?

I would guess the smaller number are actually spam accounts and other users that never made it past the email confirmation, while the larger number are marked as inactive but would more probably be classed as 'lapsed' due to long time non posting.

How long does someone have to go without posting before they are considered inactive? I check in almost daily but don't post all that often.

I think it's because your account is locked when you haven't logged in over a certain amount of time. You them have to send an email to the admin (Cheryl) so she can activate your still existing account again.

I don't know the exact length R'zil. Must be in one of the posts in the appropriate forum somewhere though.

Can't see an exact periode though...

I would also surmise that some of those lapsed members are individuals who have passed on or Post on a very irregular basis or Lurk until they see something they wish to comment on

I don't think lurking would get your account made inactive, because the site keeps track of who logs in when. But if you don't even visit to read, it's a different matter. So it's worth logging in even if you don't intend to post. However, Cheryl would know.

Good Question, With my work schedule I sometimes go weeks without even logging in, And have never been deactivated, After a 12 to 16 hour day, I just don't feel up to it. I have been on more recently, work is slowing down.

Weeks, no problem. I think it's something like two years before inactivation becomes an issue.

The default setting for members to become inactive is 180 days.

That's correct for the stats at the bottom of the Home Page; but the Membership List seems to have different criteria.

The second one one it, A'thony, joined in 29/05/2007 and last posted on 21/03/2008. But he's still listed as "Junior Member", not "Inactive".

So, he probably logged in and read something during the last 180 days?
Active doesn't necessarily means posting, I think.

The Dutch translation of the membership list says: last visit instead of last posted. Now that would be awkward.

I'm pretty sure Han's is correct. Until my recent uptick in board involvement, I was a regular visitor but very infrequent poster, yet I never became inactive.

On checking, the English version also gives "last visit" not "last post"; so Hans there may be a problem after all?

I don't think so. Inactive just means that peeps haven't been to the board in quite some time. When they try to log in they'll get a message to mail Cheryl to de activated again. So I don't see it as a problem despite not exactly knowing all particulars

I'm not entirely sure why this is an issue that you are fretting with, but upon sorting the members list by last visit, oldest>most recent, I bet there is also a minimum post count where by you don't get made inactive automatically.

But again. I'm more interested in why this is something you are delving into so deeply?

I was just intrigued by the difference between the number of active members (25) at the bottom of the front page, and the vast number (456) of "active" members on the membership list.

My mind usually works that way: looking for patterns.

Ah ok... makes sense. Pretty sure that number is the ones who have actually posted in a certain time period. I reckon about a month. The 25 most recent posters have all posted since the beginning of May, then there is a jump to the 27th(?) or April.

I was amazed that my membership was so easily restored after so long. Ironic that I fell off the grid because of illness and now have at least this minimal access because of yet another round of heart failure and all the fun things that come with it. Maybe some more long lost friends will wander back soon.
