Good fences make good neighbors.

Two somewhat free interpretations from me.

When I was in Edinburgh last year I encountered a phenomenon you see more and more: when they are restoring, renovating or even simply building a building or structure they put up a cloth "fence" not only to protect workers but also for estethic and PR reasons. This one I saw when we started the climb up the Mount to the castle. These cloth "fences" are often a joy to see.

The next photograph is of my recent trip around Turkey. Somewhere mid September we were in Izmir, the second largest city, which celebrated it's liberation day. This is a different day for most cities and villages as they celebrate the actual day they were liberated by the forces of their "founding father" Mustapha Kemal Atatürk in the years after World War I. They revere Atatürk very much as the founder of the modern secular state and republic of Turkey. The text on the fence reads: "We have established the Republic, it will grow and the law is you."

Photo taken from the tour bus. I was after the contrast of the fencing and the buildings with the many Turkish flags in de background. It didn't work out the way I wanted but I still like the picture.

I know, I'm posting three, but Cheryl told me I had to (and who am I to argue with her? )

First, the one room school house at Old Sturbridge Village

A fence near the beach in Woods Hole, Massachusetts (sorta Cape Cod)

And a bird in Oklahoma

.

"Observing the Habits of the Archaeologist in Captivity..."

Taken in the musuem at Mastodon State Historic Site, where I worked for a summer internship in 2008. I can't tell you how many times it gave me a start, seeing that guy out of the corner of my eye when there were no visitors in the museum...

(The exhibit represents the historic discovery of a manmade spear point, in contact with a mastodon bone: the first proof that humans had hunted mastodons.)

Just a guy, waitin' on a bench, with a goat...

Taken in the goat-petting area of the Children's Zoo in the wonderful, wonderful St. Louis Zoo!

Taken at the Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai. Such solemn little bulldogs with their bright red ribbons!

Right, first of all I find it a real pity that the instigator didn't/couldn't post to his own suggestion! Farclas, where are you?! I want you back in here ASAP!

I especially like Pam's first two pictures, most true to the theme.

I like Brenda's because of the horrible way they put a fence around the exhibition. This is something what is often done in museum because their directors and curators can't believe people can behave... and act as if every exhibit is holding the most precious object in the world. This, however must be one of the ugliest fences I've every encountered in a museum, admittedly around a very well executed display.
Brenda's second photo is a great one! Ot's like the man and goat were both posing and hired for the job

Thanks for posting to all! Every time I find it very interesting to see what people will come up with and how they will intepret the theme This one I personally found a hard one.

If you ever come to Australia, Hans, you'll need to go to the Scienceworks Museum at Spotswood, Melbourne - that is very Hands-on even for big kids like you

Here's a link for you: http://museumvictoria.com.au/scienceworks/

I think my favorite is Pam's second picture. (I can't see her first - it's not showing up for me.)

Hans, you're right that the museum fence is ugly - but we got so many huge groups of summer-school and summer-camp and day-care kids, all in there at once... It's just outside of the city, and besides the museum has a short trail that is the first time most of those kids see the woods, so it's a big destination for field trips.

In front of the Colorado state house, as I recall...

On a footbridge in Albany (technically a railing not a fence, I guess)
