Taking the easy way out here by posting two pictures of Istanbul by night, not even two weeks old and with no post processing done.

The first one is of a big florist stand on the national Taksim Square, near the "red light" district, so ideal for the Turkish man to not forget to take flowers home... It was taken at about half past eight. The atmosphere of Istanbul by night is wonderful.

As is demonstrated by this other nightshot, taken after 23.00 hours of boats on the Bosporus near the Galata Bridge, with the Sultan Ahmet mosque (the so called Blue mosque) in the background. The big blue and white tent on the left is only there for the time of the Ramadan (when we traveled Turkey) and is used for feeding the poor for free as is custom during the Ramadan.

The QE2 on her final voyage out of the river Tyne. As she passed they played the National Anthem and set off a wonderful firework display at the docks, and again at the piers as she passed through. A moving tribute to a wonderful ship dumped into being a stationary hotel in India cos her company was too cheap to keep her seaworthy

I have some catching up to do. I managed to find my favourite night scene from my stash of photos in the attic. I managed to scan it from the negative. This is a picture I took of the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) way back in 1989 with my old film camera. I was in the middle of commissioning a new instrument, CGS2, and nipped outside to take a picture while the instrument was integrating. So this picture shows the telescope in the middle of observing something. I was lucky the Moon was in just the right place, and my one shot just happened to be just the right exposure. Probably one of the luckiest photos I have taken.

That's a great photograph indeed, Steven. Every once in a while things fit or fall into place and we get these super shots.

Where does this telescope stand?

Hawaii of course. If you hit the UKIRT website they even have web cams showing the buildings.

Here is my second entry: the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, taken just before Anne's 80th birthday.
