11: 10 August 2009 - energy

This week's theme: energy

1. the capacity for vigorous activity; available power: I eat chocolate to get quick energy.
2. an adequate or abundant amount of such power: I seem to have no energy these days.
3. Often, energies. a feeling of tension caused or seeming to be caused by an excess of such power: to work off one's energies at tennis.
4. an exertion of such power: She plays tennis with great energy.
5. the habit of vigorous activity; vigor as a characteristic: Foreigners both admire and laugh at American energy.
6. the ability to act, lead others, effect, etc., forcefully.
7. forcefulness of expression: a writing style abounding with energy.
8. Physics. the capacity to do work; the property of a system that diminishes when the system does work on any other system, by an amount equal to the work so done; potential energy. Symbol: E
9. any source of usable power, as fossil fuel, electricity, or solar radiation.

This is a tough one - it's been hard to find images. These two are maybe tenuous, but two sides of the same event?

This one was and is definitely not as easy as it seemed. A tough one indeed.

I might have posted this photograph here before, but I took this one on the isle of Crete, last year:

And as counterweight to the power of electrical energy I can't resist to post one of an small, old windmill that is to be found in the picturesque and small fortress town of Bourtange in Groningen province (very near the German border), The Netherlands. Do click on this to go to the website of this town to see the aerial picture on the homepage!

Here is a wind farm Lanen and I passed by in Caithness, Scotland. One of the few places in Scotland where they put the wind farms in a plane rather than on top of a hill.

I was thinking of posting a picture of a medieval trebuchet, but that particular picture is one of those pre-digital photos hidden in a box somewhere in the attic.

And here I was, tempted to post a picture of the power plant but I thought, Steven will undoubtedly post one himself

I originally thought Farclas would post a picture of the power plant (very close to the rusting ball bearings). But I decided to post something else because the power plant would have been too obvious. In the end, our two pictures show the contrast between the old and the new windmills.

I almost decided to go with a different interpretation of energy and go with a pic of my neighbor's dog fetching a huge stick, but I wasn't happy enough with any of the pics. So I'm going with my first idea, which is the energy of fire.

I really like the contrast between Farclas' first picture and yours, Draco.

Cheryl, your photo is so peaceful. You do know Lanen loves candles?

Rats! Looks like Draco got there first in the race to create the perpetual lethargy machine. I prostrate myself, as much in emulation as admiration.

Yes, Draco's picture did bring a chuckle

I love Cheryl's picture, what are those little black specks? But them I'm always fascinated by existing light pictures under minimal circumstances.

This subject was clearly harder and more diiifcult than some of us thought

I have to admit, if the "rules of the game" say I have to have taken the picture, I lose. I was just in it; my wife took it, on the beach at Costa Maya, Mexico.

That is indeed one of the rules, Draco, but for this once you're forgiven.

Hans, of the two pictures you posted I prefer the electrical one. That and Cheryl's are my two favourites on this theme. The windmill is beautiful, but I would have preferred it facing the camera. Is that just me?

The aerial view of the town looks amazing. It reminds me of the citadel in Copenhagen.

Energy of the Geothermal sort

Excelsior Geyser Crater in Yellowstone National Park. Its last eruption was in 1985 but it's still happily making lots of hot water at the rate of 4000 gallons a minute.

That's a fantastic photograph Pam. I love the combination of the steam on the water and the dramatic sky in the background, and the little chunk of rock in the foreground succeeds in breaking up the expanse of water and balancing the picture.
