Default 4: 22 June 2009 - Beach, any beach!

Oh, I was tempted to post artistic beach pictures, pictures of one of the exotic beaches all over the world I have seen but... as "the beach" as a phenomenon has been the topic of conversation between Master Maelin and me several times before, I have adjusted my choice to a very recent photograph I took on a glorious May 29th. Maelin lovingly speaks of her favourite beach and hotel near that stretch of Californian oceanside and the most famous beach and boulevard of The Netherlands happens to be somewhat akin to that, with the famous and luxurious Kurhaus Hotel with its old style grandeur. In 1818 a municipal bathhouse was erected on this site and in 1885 the current hotel was erected. The Kurhaus enjoyed and still enjoys a global reputation thanks to visits from heads of state, royalty, politicians, musicians, film stars, painters and poets (Schevenignen is the beach side of The Hague, the political capital of The Netherlands). It's special to me because my great-grandfather once was a hairdresser in this hotel, taking care of many a celebrity head [more history in English here].

So, here's the Scheveningen beach with Kurhaus Hotel:

Here is a very different beach - Longniddry Beach, East Lothian, Scotland:

The chimneys belong to Cockenzie power station, and behind that is a distant view of Edinburgh and the Pentand hills.

Well, it has to be this one really, even if you've seen it before. My favourite beach, and one of my better photos of it.

Is it OK if I have two contributions this week? I really like beaches. . .

This is Paria Beach on the Colorado River, right before the Grand Canyon. I worked for the National Park Service there during the summer of 2003, and this photo waS taken then.

I'll come back later and post, or if I'm not supposed to- sorry!!

This is one of my families favorite beaches in California...it's
on Coronado Island, out in the middle of San Diego bay...and
it is one of the most beautiful places on earth to us.
This photo shows the Hotel Del Coronado from the beach side...
and that view has change very little since it was built in 1888.
It has seen countless celebrities over its incredible history,
come and enjoy all it's beauty.

This is also one of our favorite beaches...but this one is across
the bay looking towards San Diego...one of the most beautiful
cities in the world...IMO

This building started life as a small cinema. Then it became a rather down-market night club called 'The Beach' (despite that fact that the nearest strand is over 100 miles away). It is now derelict and awaiting demolition for a large city centre redevelopment.

Well, I guess I may as well kick off the discussion. I liked to see that P'ter at least went for something more original than the rest of us, but between us we've seen some lovely beaches!

Spacedog, I particularly like your shot. Yours too, Weyrlady.

Maelin, I remember that beach well from staying with my relatives on Coronado a few years back. Lovely place!

Cheryl, I like the reflections of the clouds very much.

StevenB's I like a lot as well. Nature, industry, beauty, not-so-great weather - it feels like there's a great story rolled up into that photo.

Spacedog's is a great pictures that ticks all boxes.
Now photoshop a shark in and you have a winner

From an artistic and esthetic point of view I like Steven's, Kath's and Cheryl's pictures best. They are classic and beautiful beach photographs.

What a great collection of pictures, showing how photogenic beaches can be. They are all good.

I particularly like Kath's, because of the artistic effect of the rippling sand, Cheryl's because of the fantastic reflections and Spacedog's, because it tells a story and captures a great moment.

Weyrlady, I think I have a photograph of that same beach taken from high up on the rim looking down. Is that the beach just beyond the Glen Canyon Dam near Page? It's certainly a beautiful place.

Congratulations also to P'ter for managing to find a beach even though he lives hundreds of miles from one.

Thanks Kath and Hans: I was trying a technique I have seen used many times in "Arizona Highways" magazine. The picture is taken with a wide angle lens set on its smallest aperture (for maximum depth of field) and pointed downwards to put the horizon near the top. It makes the landscape seem huge.

Another great collection.

Kath's and Weyrlady's are my favorites of this set. I love the interweaving lines in the foreground and the strong rock stacks in the back of yours Kath. And Weyrlady as usual I'm a sucker for a good geology shot; the strong reds in the strata in yours are gorgeous.

Peter, I like that you found an alternative interpretation of the theme; I like to try to do that myself when possible.

Hans, what a majestic hotel!

Spacedog, fabulous classic beach shot. I love that you can see the drops of water being kicked up by the boy's feet.

Maelin, yours are both beautiful pictures so I'm overlooking that you didn't choose just one!

Spacedog's been sprung. That boy is our little darling and he wanted to go to the beach even though we told him it was too cold to really go swimming properly but he wanted to "wet his feet". I did find one of Junior though where he was telling the waves off He takes after his father for sure.

Weyrlady, this is my picture of the Colorado River near the Glen Canyon dam:

Since there are no electricity cables in your picture, and I can't match any rock formations, perhaps yours was taken further down the river? It really is a beautiful area. Did you get there by raft?

Hans, it looks like you have a photoshop challenge .

It was great seeing beaches from all over the world! Lady M., I have to admit that your kind of stood out for me and brought back happy memories- the historic Hotel Del Coronado and it's beach are awesome. I've never actually stayed there, just drooled over it many times as a child.

Spacedog, I really like yours with and without the 'shark'. It captures a gredat moment!

I love the patterns in the sand on yours, Kath, and the reflections. The background is aLso cool, with the rock formations.

The beach in my pic is actually right near Lees Ferry, which is 15 miles (by river) downstream from the dam. Your photo of the river is awesome, and looks very familiar. I've gotten to take a couple boat rides upriver to the dam, and amazing place it is!
