Well, I resisted the temptation of just posting a black & white photograph

So here's a snapshot of "Gijs", a real farm cat (and yes, that's my hand in the picture)

It's the fourth anniversary and the day of the unveiling of 52 stainless steel stelae in Hyde Park, each casting marking the death of a 7/7 victim.

It reminded me on a small scale of the awful grey symmetry of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin. I took this image on the eve of Remembrance Day that same year - 2005. There wasn't much colour in the original image anyway, but I've de-saturated it and increased contrast to make it more sombre.

The picture I really wanted to post was not made by a digital camera, so it's buried somewhere in my collection of old fashioned prints and negatives. I'll post it at some future date when I have had time to find it. In the mean time, here is a picture of Long Meg and Her Daughters - a stone circle in the Lake District of the UK.

The sky was rather white and boring in the original photograph, so I have tweaked the exposure curve in photoshop to turn the sky negative. It would be better if the light border around the stones could be eliminated.

Oh, I dunno . . . given the mystical significance some people attach to stone circles, the incongruous freaky effect seems quite appropriate. It certainly doesn't jar with me!

On a more frivolous note, here's a silly triptych I was messing about with filters this morning. The outers are a 4-level posterisation and Find Edges; the centre I can't remember how it was achieved, but I was aiming for that Hollywood "glossy" effect you used to see in cinema foyers in the 1950s

Farclas, I've got a very good PS action for that glossy Hollywood effect, if you want it I can send it.

Thanks Hans. That would be good! I quite like the effect, but purged my PS file, so have no record of how I got there! Duhrrr! I'm running CS3 - but I guess Actions are pretty transferable. Yes?

Running CS4 but it will be no problem indeed, I think I started using it on CS2. Will send by mail later (when home).

I pulled the color from quite a lot of phots before I finally struck upon one that stood out in b&w.

Wow, where to start? Great photos everyone! Hans yours struck me right off as a creative interpretation of the theme. Gijs looks like he has a great personality (I hope that I got his name right!)

How do you do the effect where all is black and white except for one element, Farclas? I tried to do that to one of mine, and it didn't work out. I tried using Layers- is this correct? I have Photoshop Elements 6.

[answer to this question: in this topic]

AnnMarie, the juxtoposition of the destroyed building next to to manicured lawn and sidewalk struck me about yours. Where was that? It's more powerful in black and white. :-)

P.S. Cheryl, I love the happiness expressed in your photo!

I always like interesting interpretations of the theme, which Hans's and Peter's photos do quite nicely.

The linearity in Farclas's first submission is striking, and I suspect much more impactful in b&w than it would be in color.

Steven, I think I'd really like yours if not for the ghostly line left by inverting the sky colors.

AnnMarie, yours looks like an old-time travel postcard photo of the site, I think because the people are small enough that the detail of their clothing isn't visible so you can't tell if it's modern dress or from half a decade or more ago.

Weyrlady, I think I'd love to see a photo of just that owl B&W, he's a beauty!

Maelin, I love the silhouettes of your girls at the beach. It is a nice shot in B&W. From my trip last year to Florida, I discovered that many of the photos I took looked nice in B&W and took a set of them and made a collage that looks like a travel poster, which hangs on my kids' closet now.

I don't usually comment upon my own, but I'm very happy with how it turned out after struggling to find a picture that worked well initially. With the bright colors removed, I think the photo is more focussed on the happy friends starting an adventure together.

Cheryl = I loved the interaction between the friends, but is it weird that it's the hands that drew and held my attention?

Lady Maelin - Contre jour (against the sun) is always difficult; I think you cracked it!

The clasped hands do draw attention. The eye naturally follows the lines of the arms down, and the contrasting skin tones then grab the eye. It was nice that the kids arranged each other to alternate colors.

I'm back! I really like the geometric symmetry and the overall impression of Farclas' picture of the 7/7 memorial . Cheryl's and Weyrlady's pictures also work really well in black and white. I really like Lady Maelin's picture , and P'ter's, although I prefer to see sunset pictures in colour.

Less of a mistake than my own, Steven! There seemed to me to be a slight creamy/sepia tone to Peter's picture to me, I thought he'd managed a color shot in moonlight.
