Default Olympics

I am watching the opening ceremony, probably won't watch much else.

I do wonder about the athlets who come from countries that don't have winters, or at least no snow. It seems strange to me, where do they practice at?

Is anyone else going watch any of it?

If my husband happens to have it on I may watch. I think the athletes representing warm countries often live someplace else. They may have been born, say, the Virgin Islands, but live in Colorado? I heard the announcer saying some athletes were invited to compete for a country because it was where their parents are from.

Does anyone have a favorite sport they watch? I like snowboarding, skiing, and luge/bobsled.

Trivia - when my family was on vacation in Salt Lake City, Utah the summer before the winter Olympics in Park City my daughter, son and I were able to ride the bobsled run on special sleds with wheels. THAT was a fast ride!

Indoors!

Team GB has never won a medal on snow. Ice skating and various rink sports, yes, and the we've done great in some of the sliding disciplines recently...but the lack of depth on UK skis exists for a very good reason.

No snow

Maw, even our ice speed skaters practive in the States, Russia etc. especially there where they can practice with altitude!
My country is hoping for several gold medals, we do have several Olympic winners in our team, mainly skating and women's snowboarding, and she certainly does not and can not train in Holland
We need to forget about last time's ugly debacle when Sven Kramer's coach sent him into the wrong lane while in a winning position.

If I can I will watch the Dutch but I suppose I will be watching late nigth replays. I do not watch much TV.

I usually watch the Ice Skating (Men's, Women's, Pairs, and Ice Dancing), I'll watch some of the snow boarding if it happens to be on, I like the bobsled and luge (speed, man, speed!! LOL), I'm not much for the skiing (always found it kinda boring). I'm sure there will be other things that I watch, those are just the things I remember off the top of my head.

Well, it is like the Dutch hoped. We claimed all three medals on the 5.000 meters speedkating. Wow. Quite an achievement and finally something in which such an itty bitty country is the best in the world

And Jenny Jones got BRONZE! It's the first medal we've EVER won on snow, from a woman who learned to snowboard on a dry slope. She is very deservedly looking extremely chuffed right now.

I think it's pretty special to be the first woman ever to win the Gold medal on this new Olympic thing.

And it is unbelievable but the Dutch sprinter boys did it, too! Gold, silver and bronze on the 500 meters skating sprint. And two brothers, twins, on the rostrum.
This is stunning, they worked so very hard, so hard, and it paid off in a sublime way.

I've been watching bits here and there but not really paying attention to who's winning what.

I did hear that an Australian skater won a medal because all the other athletes tripped? haha

I know a lot of Australians train on the roads with wheeled versions of their equipment on roads and snowboarders sometimes practice on sand dunes. I'm not a sporty person so I don't really know.

And another gold for the Dutch at the 1,000 meters speed skating while the winner of the gold mdal for the 500 meters now claimed the bronz. Eleven mdals in total, these Olympics are absolutely great for the Dutch.

What do you mean "finally?" Everyone knows the Dutch are deadly in speed skating. It was just the 500 that was weirdly elusive, but that's probably just because when you're all 6'5" blond gods it's hard to get a fast sprint start...

Oh, men's singles skating is going to be interesting. Mostly in the sense of "Is Plyushenko going to have a hope of medaling (probably not) or are we going to see a 31-year-old blow out a knee on live television?"

Loved the first half the opening ceremony. Painfully awkward second half for everyone from the former Eastern Bloc and Germany, all going "Yeah, the thirties, forties, and fifties were awesome..." Putin's golf clap for the Ukrainian team was my favorite moment.

Favorite medal so far: gold for Poland in men's ski jumping.

I think they need more winter olympic sports. Currently it's just curling, various forms ice skating, skiing, snow boarding and luge/bobsled.

I suggest Speed Snowman Building and Competitive Chain Saw Ice Sculpture Creation.

Jeff suggested ski jumping/target shooting.

Jeff's suggestion is a discipline already, more or less without the jump. I never understood the combination of cross country skiing and shooting. I love your suggestion though.

There could also be
Clear a driveway to a garage as fast as possible.
Rescue someone from snowy or icy circumstances
Snowball fights between nations
Who build the nicest snow castle
Tracking a snow leopard or polar bear and tagging it
For shamans: let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Would make the olympics very interesting, wouldn't it?

I second all of the above
The snowball fight between nations reminded me of a story I once read about two European countries (can't remember which, sorry) that were in a war, and during one halt in combat during winter the armies started trowing snowballs at each other. It was all well and swell at the beginning, but then they started puting rocks in the snowballs and... well, you can imagine the scene. The comand of both sides forbade the armies from engaging in that "sport".

Ah, found it (God bless the Internet). It called "The great Confederate snowball battle of Rappahannock" and it happened during the American Civil War. http://mentalfloss.com/article/24042...snowball-fight
