Default The last book of the ninth pass

Well, we all know that the next ninth pass book is likely to be the last, and that it'll be a continuation of the storylines from Dolphins as well as Skies.

What do you EXPECT to see happen in this novel?

What would you LIKE to see happen in this novel?

Would you be happy with the Ninth Pass stories ending, and would you want (a) Nothing resolved, with lots of loose ends to show life goes on, or (b) everything tied up prettily, or (c) a mixture of the two.

Do you think Anne (or anyone) is capable of finishing off the series in one book, tying up all the loose ends? - regardless of whether you'd like to see this done or not.

I think that It would be nice if Anne were to write a last look about the 9th pass she would end it with Lessa's passing and from her point of view. After all Lessa is the fisrt PoV we see in dragon flight. End just as it began. Opps I miss voted I wanted the third potion I really don't care about all the plot lines.

I would like to see the end of Thread, with a trip to the Yokohama 200 Turns into the future to show that the next approach of the Red Star won't bring thread back.

I would like to see both F'lar and Lessa die, knowing they had accomplished their life's work. However, this is unlikely to happen, as Anne's said she won't kill Lessa off. I hope she could compromise and at least kill F'lar. I'd like to see F'lar seriously injured in the last threadfall, but live long enough to know that it truly was the last, and then die. Preferably with Lessa young enough for Ramoth still to fly, although that's extremely unlikely, since she'd be in her 70s.

I would like to see Golanth's injury proven to be so bad that he and Zaranth can never mate, and Tai coming to terms with the necessity of mating flights with other men. I fear that Anne'll either pull a deus ex machina trick where Golanth will use telekinesis to mate with Zaranth, or else they'll contrive to have F'lessan as Tai's stand-in. I could deal with the former even if I'd hate it, but if I see the latter I think I'll throw the book in the bath and stop reading then and there.

I would like to see some loose ends tied up to show that it truly is the last 9th Pass book, but with enough things left open for fanfic to flourish.

One book covering the retirement of Lessa and F'lar, probably following a final conflict between Toric and Dragonrider territory. Toric will have to die (maniacal laughter here), and the land issue finally resolved by acclamation. We'll also see the worst of the abominators making their move alongside Toric.

I'm not bothered so much about Golanth and Tai etc. That is hopefully a dead end.

And for an inbetween plot, something about the resettlement of Far Eastern continent (or is that far western - dont have my books with me)

I'd like to see the Lessa and F'lar story line ended somehow. Not necessarily by death, but at least by getting a nice spot in the south to retire. I'd like to see Toric get his just rewards (something with dragon flame comes to mind ). Other then that loose ends are ok. That way we could still imagine Pern serviving for many turns into the future!!

Much of what I'd like to see has already been said.

Tying up the Toric/Abominators' plot lines would be okay.

With F'lessan having helped her in Skies, I think that Tai at least can come to grips with mating flights, even if Golanth can't Fly again. He might still learn to TK to lift himself, but if they realistically portray him as a clumsy flyer who could never catch Zaranth, that would definitely work.

Opening up new, unanticipated plot lines would be great, too!

A resolution of Lessa/F'lar's lives would be good, but other notable figures might be a good kill-off prior to the End of Thread.

As long as F'lar and Lessa know they've stopped Thread, I am happy there.

TORIC, however...I would really love to see him and the Abominators all neatly wrapped up, and dropped off a high cliff without wings!

I would like to see all the loose ends tied up. I don't like leaving things unfinished.

But, Lessa or F'lar don't have to die. Perhaps it could end with them simply stepping down as Weyrleader and Weyrwoman.

And maybe have Menolly become MasterHarper. She's the first person I met on Pern, so naturally I'd want something special happen to her.

Either way, I'd be happy with spending more time on Pern.

I don't think Menolly is co-Masterharper with Sebell. He's THE Masterharper, the leader of all the harpers of Pern. Menolly's A master harper, one of several harpers who've reached the mastery level in their craft, and who either specialize in some aspect of music (composition in Menolly's case) or teach apprentices.

The only things I am REALLY adamant about in what I want to see, is Lessa and F'lar living to see the last Threadfall. I don't know if I could bear to see them die, but as long as they get through that last Threadfall. And I want to see Toric get his just deserts. Have him wreak some havoc, then recieve his punishment.

Anything else I'll leave up to Anne's judgement, she can write what she sees fit, but I'm pleading with her on those 2 points.

Menolly is a master harper. She is addressed formally as "Master Menolly."
Sebell is the Masterharper. He is addressed formally as "Masterharper" or "Master Sebell".

There is a difference.

If Lessa dies I would end up collapsing in tears. *sniffles at thought* They might have to make it after the 9th Pass though. From what I know Pernese, especially Dragonriders can live very long lives. If my guess is correct, Lessa was only in her early 5th decade when Skies was published.

Let's face it that by the last threadfall F'lar will be nearly 80 Turns old. Even if he's been lucky enough to escape serious injury from thread so far, it's not unthinkable that he and his aging dragon might make some mistake in the last threadfall, although to be sure that would be rather an ignoble end for him...

Or...

Mnementh lands on his ledge, F'lar steps off, clutches his heart and falls to the ground among the excitement...?

I'd rather not see him go in such a painful way... even if he's not fighting it, I'd just like F'lar to be able to live past the last Fall, and then slip away quietly knowing that he had fulfilled his promise.

<sarcasm> Hey, if you believe Todd, that seems to be what got Sean. Soka gets to die in bed, though her dying thoughts seem to be focused on telling Wind Blossom, "No, really, I want you to chop me up, even though we're going to drop that plot point without resolving it," while her radically OOC suddenly-a-momma's-boy son M'hall makes random trips back in time to stop things that aren't stopped. </sarcasm>

Sorry, I hated that book.

No neat wrap-ups, please, though given how old F'lar will be I can see him dying. At the very least, let it end with Lessa and F'lar, not with Jaxom-Stu, or yet another rumination on Robinton, and please, let F'lessan and Tai have been covered only briefly. Hopefully to say that Golanth never fully recovered and couldn't catch Zaranth, but Tai's come to terms with the requirements of being a green rider, without the 9th Pass rediscovering stand-ins.

I agree with you there, I hated those points especially, along with Lorana suddenly droping all aspirations of drawing all of Pern's lifeforms (I was looking forward to that, dammit! ) I didn't hate the book altogether, but there were SOOOO many things wrong that could EASILY have been changed.

That time travel thing with M'hall was sharding confusing. He sees himself come back, and SEES that his future self doesn't convince him, yet he goes back and does it anyhow because that's the way the theory works - it's an infinite loop of insanity. I'd like to see what would have happened if he DIDN'T go back. Let's see some paradoxes!

Wow, I totally forgot about the drawing the Pernese life thing. I was like, Finally, a female artist! But nope, she had to end up giving up her oh-so-wonderful art talent to save Pern through advanced bio-genetics-thingy and impress SuperQueen only to lose her and have the "too busy to feel half-dead" attitude.

Ooh! Ooh! I read this 'true' story about a couple who'd been together for a real long time and loved each other so much and were totally dedicated to each other. When the man got real sick, he was laid up in bed and the lady never left his side. The most touching part was, when the man passed away...the lady passed away a half hour later. The quote at the end was 'they couldn't bear to be apart, even in death'. Don't you sorta see something like that with Lessa and F'lar?

Any reference to Masterharper Robinton would be loved. Yeah, he's dead... That doesn't mean his fans have died with him.

A wrap up is a good idea. Preferably not with too many deaths, as that would put a lot of readers off. Perhaps the graceful passings of certain key players in the Ninth Pass books, in ways that, like the Harper's, were depressing but fulfillingly enlightened.

Naturally, there are going to be some tensions between dragonriders and the people of Pern, what with the dragons becoming...virtually useless after Thread. No offense, I still love them, but other than acting as live and efficient transport and pack-mules, they will be viewed as a waste of space to some.

The Whers! They've been looked down upon so much, have hardly made appearances in the books, save for Dragonskin and Dragonflight. To have a few chapters actively involving them would do good to show that they aren't dead.
