Default Collecting Highlight (4) - Freedom of the Race

In january 2003 a book was published by DAW books, titled Wondrous Beginnings. Internet promotion of this book read:

The writers included in this volume are a real "who was and is who" in the field of science fiction, from such masters of science fiction's Golden Age as: Murray Leinster, L. Sprague de Camp, Hal Clement, and Arthur C. Clarke, to a number of today's hottest-selling and award-winning authors such as Anne McCaffrey, Gene Wolfe, George R.R. Martin, Orson Scott Card, Lois McMaster Bujold and Stephen Baxter.

How and where did these writers get their start? Now you can find out by reading the stories that began their careers, some well-known classics, others long unavailable. Each story includes an introduction by the author--or in the case of Murray Leinster, by his daughter--which offers insight into the genesis of both the particular story and the individual writer's career. And all of them serve as fascinating examples of just what makes science fiction the popular genre it has long been and still remains today.

So, what was Anne McCaffrey’s “wondrous beginning”? Well, first of all let me tell you that Anne doesn’t think her beginning (read: her first published story) wondrous at all. But then, she became a helluva writer later on and frowned upon her very first try which she tought wasn’t up to her (later) standard...

Nevertheless The Montclair Times of August 13, 1953 published an article headed: “Anne McCaffrey Johnson Writes Prize-Winning Magazine Story” Anne's husband, H. Wright Johnson was immensely displeased with her writing, but mostly because he thought of science fiction as trash. The Montclair Times reporter wrote: “being a Princeton man, Mr. Johnson takes a somewhat dim view of his wife’s flights into outer space. He is not quite sure whether to be proud or dismayed at his wife’s breaking into print.” Cute eh?

This very first published story by Anne was “Freedom of the Race”. It counted a thousand words and was published in the magazine Science Fiction Plus. Anne’s original title for it , “The New Freedom”, was rejected and changed by the editor. With this story Anne won a $100 prize (in 1953!). The magazine at the time (October 1953) cost only 35 cents. It held one black and white illustration by Peter Poulton and appeared on page 20. The story tells of aliens (martians) who have subjugated Earth and are attempting to use Terran women as surrogate mothers for their race. it doesn't work out the way they planned though... (won't give away the plot).

I don’t know the exact number in which Science Fiction Plus was printed but would be very much surprised if it was more than a few thousand. I was able to find one copy on www.abebooks.com, which sells for just over 40 US dollars excl. postage: click here for more information. If you just want to read the story you'd better just buy a new or used paperback edition of Wondrous Beginnings, at Amazon for instance: click here.

Just a bit of trivia here that I feel I must put in!!!

Anne did not have a copy of Freedom of the Race to give to the publishers when they asked her for it. Some folks on her website knew I had a copy and asked me if I'd send a copy of the story to Anne. What else could I do but send it??!!?? I was so happy to help Anne out by sending her a copy of the story. And I'm glad it was included in a current publication so that so many other people can read the first published story she did.

I sent the copy of the story to Anne in May 2001, so it took about 2 years to get the book done.

I just went and found a copy of the original "Science Fiction Plus", magazine on ebay. It was only $12.99, and I will be very happy to add it to the rest of my collection.

P.S. It will be very interesting to read her first story.

Becky, WOW !!! To have been able to help Anne, with getting her own story to her. She must have been very happy that you have collected so many of her treasures.

Or thought I was nuts! She didn't think enough of the story to keep it around.

I got to thinking I have a one of a kind collectible now! I sent her a letter with the copy of the story and she sent me the letter back with a handwritten note at the top of it. I kept it and the envelope she sent it in from Dragonhold. The letter is how I knew when I'd sent the copy to her.

My copy of the magazine came from Canada. I was in a book store and couldn't find a thing. I turned to leave and behind the door was a stack of large sized magazines. I glanced down at them as I was leaving and noticed some of them were Science Fiction +. My heart skipped a few beats, I'll tell you! I wasn't sure if I'd find the right one or not and dared not HOPE the one I wanted would be there. Needless to say, it was there and has been in my posession ever since!

Bekcy, That is a wonderful story on how you found your copy, I just took a chance that perhaps they might have one for sale on ebay and low and behold they did. I was shocked out of my panty-hose to see it there for sale.
