Spiff, You are very good, I really love your dragon in flight. Your dragon is excelent. Better in consept and design than most on the covers. You have a lot of tallent I hope that you keep at it.

Thank you! That's one thing I've partculary tried to perfect (still a long way off) is the musculature of dragons. I have rarely seen an illustrated dragon that has the proper muscles to allow flight. In most, it seems like the wings are just stuck onto the sides, and have no apparant pectoral muscles to make a down-stoke seem plausible at all. So I've tried my best to come up with a structure that might work. But I need to make a sculpture of it in clay to get a full fleshed out view of what it would be, it's so hard to imagine it clearly at all angles, it never transfers to paper well enough.

I think that you did very well with the one that I looked at, you will get better with more practice. The muscle struckture of a imagined creature is very difficult to see in your mind, but the clay sclupture will help you a lot. To be able to see it in a three dimentional manner will aide you in the different angles. Don't give up you are a very talented young man, keep practicing and you will get there.

Very spiffy!

The way you can get the wings in any angle to near perfection amazes me. There are a lot of weird wing angles I just can't seem to get right, but you do them very well indeed. I also live how they actually look like real, plausible dragons and not just those long snakey things with random arms or big scaley beasts flying with unrealistically tiny wings.

Like the Shrek dragon? You may like these wing poses, but those are only the better ones. You haven't seen the piles of failed ones But thank you very much!

With the help of my grandpa's funding, I can finally do a sculpture! It won't be a strictly accurate Pernese dragon though, since this is my first one, I want to have some precise reference so I don't mess it up. I'll be going from Michael Whelan's 'All the Weyrs of Pern' cover (haven't decided whether or not to add Jaxom riding him yet).

I'll post a picture of each major stage http://www.deviantart.com/view/30231661/ I've since tweaked the armature a bit so it's more accurate to the pose on the cover, but it won't be exact, I made the wings a tad too large. But that's ok, because I thought they looked too small anyways

It really depends on subject matter... I had quite a number of requests on the KT, but that ended up as a disaster because of things I couldn't finish to my satisfaction, if at all. I REALLY hate to turn anything down without at least getting a looksee at what's being asked, so if you could PM me your ideas please? I'm still not quite back in gear with drawing, I've had a bit of a short circuit lately... so I can't make any guarantees, but I'll definitely try, especially if this is to do with Dragon Days, which I'd be honored to be a part of!

Note: alot of it hinges on reference, especially clothing, faces and backgrounds - my creativity is horrid when it comes to making that stuff up on my own So if you have specific idea on how you want your characters to look (celebrity or something), specifics on clothing, and if you know of any photo reference for background (if you want one) that would be a HUGE help. Please also include if you have any ideas for specific poses for dragons, firelizards, etc.

Sorry if I've scared you off with my pickiness

Just keep working at it Spiff, no matter what!!! I quit drawing because I too need a reference to help me draw. I have picked up and laid down the old pencil several times over my lifetime. Pencil has been down quite a while now, but am considering picking it back up once the house we're beginning to build is done. The last thing I did was Anne's picture for the cover of the Collector's Guide. Sad that. But I'll get back into it at some point. It's just easier to keep going with it thru everything.

Absolutely, go right ahead! And I've been thinking about doing that, I'd love to be able to give them something. I wish I could give them the original, but I think the one on the computer looks much better with the color background rather than plain white paper...
