Default My Pern Music

I have mentioned before that I have written music to many of the songs of Pern. It started with the Question Song - I started hearing music every time I read the words and I had to put it down on paper. (This was completed long before I ever heard the Masterharper of Pern CD.) Now I have finally been able to get them printed out (I was able to download a music notation program on the computer here at work) and scanned, and will now begin posting them!

They are in a photobucket account, and here are the links to the ones I've put in so far:

The Question Song
The Fire-Lizard Song
The Gather Song

The Question Song is somewhat slow, at about 90 beats per minute; the Fire Lizard Song is faster and very bright - about 150 beats per minute. The Gather Song is about like the Fire Lizard Song - they are both in 6/8 with an accent on the first beat - and they are in 6, not in 1 or 2.

I've got music for Brekke's song if you want-only it needs polishing- its scored for cello (sorry but I wanted the range and the harmonics-and i can actually play it...) and its in A minor.

I already wrote my own version! I also extended the verses quite a bit. Here's the list of songs I've written:

The Question Song
The Fire-Lizard Song
The Gather Song
Menolly's "Song for Petiron"
My White-Winged Craft
Eastern Sea Hold Song (additional verse)
Brekke's Lament (additional verses)
Harper, Tell (additional verses)

Menolly's Story - additional verses, music not finished

I'll try to get them up soon.

I don't have my own computer, and I have no idea how to do soundfiles... I'm trying to figure out how to record them on a cd that I could send to a certain lady in Ireland... The Question Song is exactly as written, the Fire Lizard Song is possibly in the wrong time signature. I need to work on that some more.

Well, if you can record it in any way, do send me a copy and I'll digitize and host it for you.

And if you will be sending it to Anne your best choice is indeed CD. Which should pose no problem at all as soon as you have a digital recording.

As soon as I have a cd recorded, send it to you and you'll digitize it, and then there'll be no trouble making a cd?

I really have no idea where to start - except I'm planning to ask my music professor if he has a good recorder I could use - once I get home.

Have you thought of composing music for other poems and pieces, other than Pern ones? If so, I'd be happy to supply texts for you.

I finished scanning the music - here's the whole list!

The Question Song
Menolly’s “Song for Petiron”
The Fire-Lizard Song
Gather Song
Eastern Sea Hold Song
My White-Winged Craft
Harper, Tell
Brekke’s Lament page 1
Brekke’s Lament page 2

Most of them can be read straight, but some, like Harper, Tell and the Eastern Sea Hold Song need to have a little... not swing, but a looser interpretation. Also, I think the Fire Lizard Song might have been better in 12:8 rather than 6:8 - I was thinking of it in four groups of three at a time, but didn't realize the program could do 12:8. Maybe someday I'll have access to the program again, but until then, enjoy the music!!!

Had to postpone the recording.

I showed the music to my sister and she made a suggestion that I agree with - "Brekke's Lament" should be in 3:4 with pickup notes (anacruses) rather than in 4:4. Keep that in mind when you read the music - I don't have the option of changing it now.

I'm so excited! I was able to use my school's sound studio to record my Pern songs! The guy made me two copies of a CD and is going to make the songs into MP3s too! I am so thrilled! It went really well, and it's a really good recording. Soon I am going to send one of the CDs and several copies of the sheet music to Anne with permission to use them on a second Pern CD... and even if she declines, now I will be able to share my music here!

Yippee!!!

Oh, and my sister noticed another wrong time signature
Brekke's Lament should be in 3:4 time with pick-up notes (anacruses) rather than in 4:4. I can't believe I did that!

I decided it's time I bump this! I'm going to repost the links and give some comments.

The Question Song (Dragonflight)
Can be read straight; should be somewhat slow, haunting.
I wrote this tune BEFORE I ever heard the Masterharper of Pern CD!

The Fire Lizard Song (Dragonsinger)
I think this is my favorite one of all - it just seems to fit so well! It sounds kind of Irish to me, too. I had a hard time writing it because I didn't realize the rhythm was 12:8!

The Gather Song (Dragonsinger)
A close cousin to the Fire Lizard Song!

Menolly's Song for Petiron (Dragonsong)
This one is pretty straightforward - and difficult to sing without wanting to cry.

Harper, Tell (Dragonsinger)
The first verse is from Dragonsinger. The other four verses I wrote. I am particularly proud of how well they fit.

My White-Winged Craft (Dragonsinger)
With the triplets, I think this one sounds almost Spanish... maybe like a tango... I'm not sure, but I think castanets might work!

Brekke's Lament page 1 (Dragonsinger
Brekke's Lament page 2
This includes the verses from Dragonsinger - from within a chapter and from a chapter heading. I used Menolly's verses as an intro, then told the story from Brekke's point of view, since that was the direction it seemed to be going in.

Eastern Sea Hold Song (Dragonsinger)
I wrote another verse in addition to the ones from the book. The tune is vaguely reminiscent of "Shenandoah" and possibly "O Danny Boy" - sort of.

So there they are! I'm sorry about the picture quality - I'll try to rescan those sometime.

Brenda!!!! Those are amazing (and so are you and your voice).

The songs sound great and the Question Song gave me goose bumps (I think it is better than the one on the Pern CD).
The only one that didn't feel right was Harper Tell, but that's one of my favourites and in my mind I always hear a man (bariton) sing it, so consider me pre-conditioned
I absolutely love the Fire Lizard Song, it has an Irish lilt to it that fit the song so well it made my heart glad to hear!

Well done, lady, well done!

Uhm... do I have your permission to link to your you tube songs from the Pern Encyclopedia? (mentioning giving and duly giving credit of course)

The Question Song is my favorite.

When I saw the sheet music posted, I played through melodies on my recorder before I watched the videos. I would have played the melodies on my piano, but it's too far away from my computer to do it...

Brenda, WOW!!! These are lovely...you have really managed to bring the songs of Pern alive. I have often longed to hear them instead of just seeing them written on the flat white page.
Now I can truely imagine Menolly getting up and singing one of her lovely songs.
Thank you very much for going through all the trouble to record all of these so that we could hear what your music sounds like....and then to share them with us. You are a very talented lady indeed.
I only wish that I had some way of recording what you have put up, so that I could keep it and add to my collection....sigh!!!

They're lovely. I especially like your version of the Question Song. It's far more creepy than Opland & Freeman's version. It would be nice to get them in better quality soundfiles...

I know you couldn't do much about that no need to either as you have a lovely voice!

Must say I'm not a writer of music myself so maybe I'm not the right judge but probably because of the same reasons I sketched before the tune didn't sound right either; maybe especially with this one I might have expected a more Irish feel to it.

I would love to be able to do the same thing. As of right now, only my family can hear me play piano while I'm practicing, or during the holidays when they are visiting. I actually thought of using my mother's video camera to record me playing a whole bunch of showtunes, but my piano is so out of tune right now that I'd have to go elsewhere in order to have decent sound quality.

I love my piano though, it belonged to my great-grandmother and it has real ivory on the keys. (I take possession of the piano even though it still really belongs to my mother.... )

Perhaps one day I'll figure something out, and then I can share it all with you.
