I went to the used book store today, mostly looking for something to read next week when I have to go on an errand with Mike. The woman had a pile of 8 or 10 of Anne's books on the floor near the front desk. I asked if I could have a peek and she said I could. She'd gotten them all in at one time and a "collector" told her she'd be by to purchase them, but never showed up. I don't even remember exactly what was there, all hardbacks, though. Most of them I have already and one Acorna which series I'm not interested in. Anyhow, she had a copy of Crystal Singer with a jacket I hadn't seen before and since I'm not sure if I own a copy I decided to get it. It's a Book Club Edition, I believe printed in 1982 by Nelson/Doubleday. The cover artist is Dennis Meehan. I have to say, I don't think it's very flattering!

Oh, I also bought two paperbacks to take to Dragon*Con and possibly get autographed. I bought Jody Lynn Nye's Waking in Dreamland and Terry Brook's The Elf Queen of Shannara. I'm going to read Jody's book next week, when I go around with Mike.

Ah yes, this cover, right?

She does have a particularly ugly expression on her face, it's quite odd!

Congrats on all your purchases!

That cover is indeed not very flattering but... the only US hardback because The Crystal Singer was never brought out by Ballantines/Del Rey as a regular hardback which is rather silly as they did publish the following two volumes.

The only thing that can be said is that the first hardcover published van the UK Severn House one and that the Doubleday hardcover (the one you found) was puboished in the same year. So maybe Anne's regular publisher ceded the rights or something to the bookclub?

Any which way, a good find Cilla

Here I was thinking it wasn't much, just an ugly cover to a book I hadn't read in a long time. That's pretty much still how I look at it, since I don't collect covers, but I'm glad to hear you all think I made a good choice!

The SFBC eventually replaced that cover with another one. It's harder to scrounge up online, but shows Killa in orange coveralls.

Well I for one envy you that one! I don't have a hard cover Crystal Singer and my old much read paperback is falling apart. I'd given up finding it in hard cover but now you've encouraged me to keep looking.

We're getting in mid-afternoon on Thursday. As far as T-shirts are concerned, I might bring along my Emerald Rose one, I've been "helping" at their website for most of a year now. Do you like Celtic music? We could meet up at their booth or at one of their mini-concerts.

Cheryl, OH Thank you...that was one of covers that you sent me when I was doing Pam's portrait...I knew that I had seen it...had to get out all those cover pics to make sure.

following along with Hans and Cilla...I also want to find one now.

Cheryl, Yes I think Hans, is finally going to have to come out of the book case and admit that yes... he is collecting all of Anne's books, or come to think of it...anything he can find that concerns Anne at all......

I have the first SFBC hardback of Crystal Singer.

What I find ironic is that a couple years ago, I found another one at a thrift store or something and bought it to sell.

Heck, I couldn't give it away. It went back to Goodwill. And I've been passing up any I've seen since then.

I'm pretty sure everyone "knew" I was going to have to go back to the used bookstore this morning, just to have a second peek at that nice pile of Anne books. And, sigh, I bought another, but I think I'm finished with them. The others weren't anything out of the ordinary. What I bought was a Tor hardback of The Girl Who Heard Dragons, cover art by Whelan and with 24 more illustrations by him sprinkled around inside. Also, I was quite pleased to find the Introduction titled "So, You're Anne McCaffrey". It's about 8 pages long and I had never read it before. It gave me some very tender insights into her personal life as an author, and the best part was that I could "imagine" her voice as I read it! It may be raining outside, but I'm feeling warm and cosy at the moment!

That introduction (a potatofarmers dream? ) is a great read indeed! Nice and full of Anne's humour (I can vouch that she's just as she pictured herself in real life, humour and mischief both)

Cilla, I am so glad that your used book store had a least one more treasure for you to take home. That part of that book, does have a very personal feel to it...and I heard Anne talking as I read it also. Perhaps this winter I will curl up with that book again to enjoy...your "warm and cozy" feeling!!!

Thanks to Sara and L'isa I went back to ebay and found several copies. The one I think I will go for is a UK version being sold in the US with a very interesting cover, as far as I can make out. The same seller (neurojac) also has a first edition Dragonquest that is way out of my price range but I thought I should mention it in case anyone is interested.

I've seen tecopy you mention. I've bought from Neurojac in the past and have no complaints or remarks.

The cover of the UK hardback is interesting indeed. The original artwork for it (a big oil painting) hangs in Anne's living room.

I've tried ditching Anne stuff on eBay, and while I hit pay dirt a while back with a batch of bookstore-new Talent series hardbacks (which I bought for $3 each at a discard sale), the Dragonriders stuff from the same sale I practically couldn't give away. I pawned Renegades off on some poor girl at a yard sale (felt guilty) and finally "sold" for dirt-cheap the rest to a used book exchange. The rarer items will go usually, but the regular books? Honestly not worth the listing fees. They're too easy to find.

Sandi, look at the UK listings and see if the postage is affordable. There's several CS's there.
