Default My new job

...and by 'job' I mean 'volountary work' at a local charity shop. This isn't the first charity-based work I've done. I stood for two terms as the President of the Derby Leos Club. (Like 'Lions International' but for Under 18's).

It isn't so much the job itself as the work I'm going to be doing that I'm really, -really- looking forward to.

Seems as though they need someone to sort out their books for them. I'll be re-ordering their shelves, generally keeping the books tidy, checking the books for any special editions to be put on a separate shelf and basically just tidying up their -Absolutely massive- store room full of 'em.

Since they're not allowed to resell ex-library copies, I get them for free if I want them, plus I get first pick of any of the other books coming through. (At full price, of course, since it's a charity shop).

I went in today just to enquire and after speaking to me for half an hour regarding what I'd be able to do and how I'd re-order, the lady went to the wall and actually ripped down the advertisement then and there...^^

-Is really, really excited-

That is really cool. Hopefully you will continue to enjoy it. It always helps when you enjoy what you do. I work at a local community college and absolutely enjoy working there. I am the bread winner and my husband works around the ranch (30 acres, some sheep, a llama and just upkeep). He always tells me, when I no longer enjoy working, we can swap and he will go work off the property. I don't think that will ever happen.

-Chuckles- It's the 'Cats Protection League'. The store room at the back has absolutely boxes and boxes of books.

Basically, it's something for me to do (and enjoy, and get experience doing, since I'm seriously considering doing something regarding books in the future) until I get a paid job. (Which I need rather badly).

They're just glad to have someone who's willing to get stuck in. Granted, I only know a small, small amount of what there is to know about book care and whatnot...But I'm learning. -Chuckles-

-Grins- To be perfectly honest it may be wise of you to. I bought an AMC 1st edition of 'Renegades' there today for £5. (I'll be putting it up on Book collectors thread tomorrow) and it's in great condition and whatnot. Some finds are really, really good.

It sounds like the job is a prefect fit for you. I hope you have fun doing it & leave some of the Anne books for others. Maybe just a few.

If the woman wasn't required by law to have my information (application form) I would've started then and there...my fingers were quite literally itching. -Chuckles-

They had some books back in that store room from the mid 1800's. ...and I was wincing when she showed me how they were all stacked in the back room...then she told me they never dusted or cleaned them... That hurt. -Shudders-

It sounds like you got your work cut out for you. At least it should keep you out of trouble for the summer.

I wonder why no one has ever established a charity for the care and protection of abandoned and abused books. Sounds like you may be off to a good start, Sara!

With the exception of the lack of pay, it does sound like a dream job Sara, congrats!

Take care of those poor books. They need some real TLC.
