Aussie scientists grow mammary glands

An Australian research team is closer to understanding breast cancer after they induced mice to grow new mammary glands from stem cells.

The research opens the possibility of growing complex organs, such as lungs, intestines and breasts for humans, Fairfax newspapers reported.

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute team in Melbourne says it's the first time a complex organ - other than the skin - has been grown from a single stem cell.

The project could help scientists understand the development of other organs, one of the lead researchers, Jane Visvader, said.

It also has important ramifications for cancer research, she said.

Scientists will be able to investigate how gene mutations occur, disrupting normal mammary development and eventually causing breast cancer.

It's a step towards a cure. And that's important, no?

That is wonderful, I just wish that there was some way to do it without using animals.
The way is getting clearer to finding a cure of most if not all cancers, hopefuly for our children. So they will not have to know that kind of pain.
