Default Second Linda Eicher portrait for the Pern Encyclopedia

In May we were proud to announce that Linda Eicher would be painting portraits of People of Pern that are not included in the book with the same name by Robin Wood. We started the series with Pernese heroine Sallah Telgar.

The second portrait in the series is one that has long been awaited by many a Pern fan: Admiral Paul Benden.

As a tribute to Anne McCaffrey, Linda used the very blurry and unclear picture of colonel G.H. McCaffrey (Anne's father) that appears in Anne's biography Dragonholder as the basis for the portrait. And what a magnificent portrait it has become! Do click the fragment here on the right to go and see the full work and behold not only the portrait but Admiral Benden and Governor Emily Boll holding the Pern and FSP flags.

Oh Lin, it's beautiful! He definitely fits my image of Benden. And I see the badges and rank markings, which turned out great!

That's amazing! (Though I don't suppose that ought to be very surprising, since Lady M did it. -Chuckles-)

That actually looks a lot like I imagined him to be...^^

That is a beautiful portrait. Looks just like one would expect him to look. A very intelligent face.

Wonderful as usual Lin.

Thank you all so very much for your very lovely compliments on this new portriat.

I am very, very happy that it fits into what some of you thought he would look like. That is one of my biggest fears with these portriats. I really don't want them to be just what I think they should look like but what Anne might have thought they looked like when she wrote about them in her stories.

I want to say... that I have had a lot of fantastic help from Hans and Cheryl with finding some of the pictures for me to work from and also some very good advice about what the character might look like.

P.S. If any member wants to find a photo for me to use... that you think really looks like a certain character...then please feel free to send a link of the photo to me in the PM. I would be very greatful for any and all help!!!

P.S.S. Please realize though that even if you send me a photo....I still might not be able to use it as it might not go with the books discription of the character...but I will consider all photos that are sent to me.

P.S.S.S. PLEASE try to make the photo link to a photo that is a decent size...Thank you!!!

Maw, Like Hans said, I'm not re-doing any of the fantastic portriats that Robin did, and she already did Mirrim...Sorry!!! I am doing all different characters from the rest of the stories.
Also I don't think it would be right, to use personal photos of family and friends for Pern Characters...well not unless they are of Anne's family and friends...since that is who she based several of them on.

But thank you for trying to help!!!

Wow, Maelin! I knew that was Anne's father as soon as I opened the thread! And he's perfect for Paul Benden! I think Anne would love this tribute to her father. He was the perfect choice! Bravo! :applause:

@Becky, Thank you so much for the lovely compliment.

I decided he was the perfect choice, when Hans sent me an old list of his...that had some likely canidates for portriats on it...one of the names on that list was Colonel McCaffrey for Admiral Benden. I went looking for photos of the Colonel...and found a couple of fuzzy pictures of him in Dragonholder, and the portriat kind of grew from there...with lots of debates over what should be in the back ground...poses, colors and and what the uniform insignia should look like. Soooo as you can see there was a lot of work to this one by all three of us. My Thanks again to Cheryl and Hans

not really, the pics are side by side. bring down the volume(poofiness) of bendens hair and widen the set of the eyes and his smile a little. The sketching of nose and mouth appear almost the same. That was the first thing I noticed when I saw the portrait. It Is lovely and I think it is wonderful that it is based off of Anne's father. I have never seen a pic of him so I can't say if it looks like him or not. Lady Maelin's work shows her exceptional talent and because of its rich detail it is also very distinct, like Linsner's. That probably creates structural similarities in her portraiture. The portraits look like they could be brothers to me.
