Default Harper Hall Trilogy Question

It's been awhile (10 years?) since I read these and I was thinking of rereading them again --but to my kid this time. My question though is how all ages really are these books? He's only three years old, should I wait a couple more?

Go for it. The child will soon let you know if he's not interested.

But - I don't think I'd try it. I have a 3-turn-old grandson. With the attention span of a gnat. Short, colourful books with pictures work best.

I think the structure is not conducive to the attention span, though the material is certianly safe enough for his age. The books are simply not written in a way that a three-year-old is likely to be engaged by. This is less about the length overall and more about the build up to events. Most children at that age do not have the patience for the broader details covered in novels - they want to get right into the story, not spend ten minutes being told what life as a holder is like or hearing about the layout and appearance of the area.

Hmm, interesting. Well part of it's selfish in that I want to re-read them as well. Best to teach the kid how to read chapter books anyway

I know he's smart enough to understand it, even if he doesn't have the patience.

Perhaps not Dragondrums; simply because of a certain scene towards the end...

SPOILER: Farli's mating flight, and how that affects Menolly and Sebell. Nothing too bad, but you might not want to have to explain what's going on to a three year old...

You can try it, but I think it will be a very short experiment. Unfamiliar culture on a different planet, burial at sea, girls can't be teachers, fostering, corporal punishment --- you'd be stopping to explain something every few seconds. The background to Dragonsong is not really understandable without the Foreword, and that's written for older children with at least some science vocabulary.

What you could do is read the series yourself and then retell it (much abridged) in terms your 3-year-old can understand, maybe as a series of nightly episodes. After all, your intention is to share with him something you enjoy. He can read the books himself when he's 10 or so.

If you wanna reread them, just reread them by yourself. That's my thought. If you wanna spark an interest in Pern, then go to the library and get a copy of "People Of Pern", or whatever it's called. Those pictures are drop-dead gorgeous, and like Lily said, your son will let you know if he's interested.

For the rest of Pern, yes, wait until he's ten or so.

PS: I forgot to mention it was Kimi, Sebell's queen, who basically set off Menolly's and Sebell's relationship. Farli is Piemur's queen.

I used to read my youngest brother to sleep with Winston Churchill's 'My Early Life'

Really boring.

Sent him to sleep really fast!

Dragnodrums also contains Meron essentially being tortured by the 'good guys' by having medical treatment withheld until he's forced to name an heir. Plus it's implied quite subtley the disease he's dying from is an STD of some sort.

Even if you read DS/DSinger, I'd probably skip DD for a while.

I thought it was some type of cancer.

But true, DragonSong/DragonSinger are more closely paired, since they're about Menolly. And DragonDrums is about Piemur.
