Good news about the doctor, maw!

I gather your niece isn't just getting married because the lawyer thinks it's a good idea?! Custody battles often get nasty, I've watched a few over the years.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Perdita. I hope the improvement continues!

Moonlady, I hope your son does well on the new medication.

I'm watching dozens of ladybugs landing on the outside of the window screens. It's the time of year when they want to get inside. A few always manage it. We've heard owls hooting in the trees outside our bedroom recently. Ah, nature!

Kibby used her school money to get a much needed new computer. More of an I pad with key board than anything. Too small for me. The virus protection decided what she down loaded to do papers on, Word Free, was a virus and removed it along with the paper she has been working on all day. Luckily I managed to restore it. She happy again.

Everyone else in our family have laptops except me. I have a Nook tablet and for bigger stuff I use the old desktop. Jeff is getting around to buying a new desktop. Jenn & Fred both have IPad-like tablets that they love.

I figured that about the wedding, good for them!

It's different I agree. I used a Desktop for nearly 20 years before I got my current Laptop and it took me at least a month or two to get used to the Keyboard.

Recently bought Marjon a 27 inch iMac too. She slowly coming around to using Apple She's still using windows at work otherwise she'll be an Apple Girl (yeah!)
She doesn't use it much though, she's a real iPad addict Also got an iPhone now of course and I am the proud owner of one of the new iPhone6 since a few weeks.

And what's nice, I also sold my old iPhone 3G and the 4S last week (I skipped the 5). They apparently are still used widely.

Must admit I don't use the MacBook much any more...

My word rate drops to the floor on a laptop, so even though my computer is a lappie, I use a standard keyboard with it. Partly this is because my fingers are so short (think ten year old kid) that I really need the incline on the kbd to reach the top letter keys, the numbers are a bit of a stretch even so. That said, I never use the numbers as I need the number pad for any PINs etc. I touch-type with 8 fingers and one thumb (spacebar), and rarely look at the keyboard. Besides, I really can't stand touchpads, how are you supposed to drag and drop with those?

Yeah, that's a pain. I ignore the touchpad on my laptop. I think the last time I used it was when an old mouse was having problems. I recently got some fluorescent keyboard stickers to make the keys easier to see, and also so I'd have labels to replace worn off letters, even though I mostly type without looking. Just have to check for arrow keys and number keys.

Laptops have their uses, and I use one regularly. Not without an external monitor and keyboard though.

For one, I confess to being a bit of a keyboard snob, and wouldn't swap my old IBM Model M for anything (possibly with the exception of a Northgate OmniKey Ultra which I generally consider to be the One True Keyboard). Secondly, once I discovered how useful it was to have two monitors in use at once, it became very hard to go back. When my next PC gets built at some point in the future, it will most likely be set up so as to allow simultaneous output to four displays surrounding my workstation.

I am at a small convention with Kibby. Her Live Action Role Playing group is here which is why she wanted to come. I came mainly because she needed me to drive.

She didn't wear it much, mainly for pics. I think it looks good on her

Very cute, maw. She looks better in one than some people I've seen!

Mmmm mmmmm! Jenn & Mike are having Thanksgiving dinner at their place. This means I don't have to cook for the first time in about 30 years. Our contribution is buying a turkey from the local turkey farm. One of Mike's brothers has a deep fryer and is going to do a second turkey in that. I've never had it done that way but I hear it's very tasty. There should be about 12 of us so a good crowd!

Simon, I have never done it. I did a google search and came up with this "how to" cooking page. It seems like it takes less time than in the oven. The end result looks tasty!

A few years ago I was having trouble with my laptop getting really hot, so I got a stand for it that has a fan in it. Apparently laptops are really not designed for being used on a table, because then the air can't circulate. The cooling part was the main reason I got it, but it turned out to be really nice for typing because I can set it to hold the laptop's keyboard at an angle similar to a regular keyboard.

I have a mouse that I plug into the USB port, to use whenever I'm working at the table; if I'm just messing around while watching TV or whatever I'm fine with the touchpad.

Here's the cooling rack I use:

Do you have well water? We are on a well here. When we had dinner with friends the other night well water came up in conversation and Jeff mentioned that our well is 300 feet deep. Knock on wood, we've never had a shortage of water. I hope whatever is wrong is simple and not expensive!

We do have well water. We are hoping the pump has not gone out. That would be VERY expensive. The only time we've had a problem was when the hose got left on by accident. Even then we had it back a half hour later.

Oh! The idea of somebody on well water is enchanting!!!

So it's probably pure water with no nasties like fluoride in it?

How delightfully rural!!!!

Please don't tell me it's all piped to the house and spoil my illusions!!!

Our water is full of fluoride and chlorine etc........... But there is a supply of underground pure water running through our valley and a couple of points where it has been piped up to taps. These places are very popular and I don't blame people for using them.

There are advantages to having a well, mostly the water is pure, but not always. Any pollution that gets into ground water gets into the well water. When we had this house built the well had to be "Shocked" with bleach because of the amount of pollution in it. Now it is good. When we lose power we lose water.

You also can have problems with the pump, such as the pressure switch going bad. We now have a new one and water. Since the switch was replaced less than a year ago it might not cost us anything. The guy had to talk to the people he got it from.

Pressure switches are rarely guaranteed that long. Most last a long, long time, but some fail quickly. I was thinking that it might have been that, or the control box that feeds it and the pump. That control box just cost me over $200 by the time the guy came out & put it in. I could have swapped out the $65 part if I'd known to diagnose it. Next time......

As for ground water pollution, that's why my well is over 200 feet deep. Every new well should be bleach treated to clean out the pipe & all before use.

This is was the same well we had been using since the old house was bought. We had no idea there was a problem until bank made us check it. Not sure what they would have done at that point, since we had already moved into new house and old house had been torn down.

Picked Kibby up at work Friday night to find out she had fallen and hurt her hand at 7:30. It was very swollen, even tho she put ice on it since falling and did all her work one handed. The manager knew she fell, but did not think it was as bad as Kibby said it was. He did not bother writing it up or even leave a note saying she had been hurt.

I took her to the Emergency Dept. the Dr. said he did not THINK it was broke, but there was something there, he THINKS it is a growth plate. There was no radiologist there so he could not say for sure. He took her out of work for two days. Her hand is worse, I think Dr. was wrong and it is broken.

Spent Sat. taking Kibby to work to give them paper work from hospital. They took her to get a drug test. While she was doing that I took my niece, Melissa shopping. She had an epidural on Fri. to help with pain she has been having. They screwed something up and she is in more pain than before the shot. They want her to go up there (UVA) tomorrow. The problem is Madison's birthday party is tomorrow night and Melissa is getting married in a week and has things she needs to do.

After picking Kibby back up Sat. we took Melissa home then went first of the month shopping. Today, we stayed home. Kibby slept and took pain drugs, I did some NANOing.

I hope Kibby's work takes this seriously, even if it's not broken. I am upset that they did not document it in any way and I hope that does not mean they would try to claim it did not happen at work!? They took her for a drug test! Whatever for? Surely they weren't trying to say she was "on" something and that was why she fell! I hope this turns out alright but I am sceptical of most (not all) employers, expecially when it comes to job related injuries. Best of luck in the coming week, it sounds very busy for you!

It has now been documented. It was just that manager who didn't bother saying anything. The next day we talked to a different manager.

It is policy of almost any place to drug test anyone injured on the job. I'm not worried, she doesn't do drugs and has not been around anyone who has done them around her. It is also policy that the manager had to take her, not me. I could not even ride in the same car with her. There are things you can buy that will make you test neg. when you have done drugs.

Hubby had a friend that had to take a pee test. He got fired when it came back that HE was pregnant.

Now THAT is funny, and served the guy right!

I'm glad Kibby's accident is now documented. Crossing fingers it is nothing too serious!

She said last night that her thumb is now going numb and is tingling. Today's plans,
1) Have Kibby call work (she hates doing things on the phone.)
2)Take Kibby to school, she has missed too much speech class to miss more
3)Find out if I'm taking Melissa to UVA, if I take her that is where Kibby will go
4)Find out if anyone at Lynchburg E.D can look at her X-rays (someone who can read them)
5) Take Kibby to Dr or back to E.D
6)Come home pick Mom up
7) Go to Madison's birthday party, she is now 10

Sounds like a very busy day and the only potential for fun is the party. Ugh!

P'ter, I am going to take a chance and assume you mean Peter Senge in your comment. If so, then I am curious what you disagree with.

Mawra, hugs to Kibby and your niece. My thoughts will be with you and your family that everything works out and they both have full and speedy recovery. Also, that your niece enjoys her wedding and is able to relax.
