I hope so... Know there's another book coming out, so maybe the Farmers will reappear in it. And no, I don't know the exact date.

Pern, actually, though I do like Freedom and most of the other series. I'd probably put Petaybee second only because it has special meaning to me.
Series-wise Crystal Singer is my least favorite and I don't count Doona since I've not been able to get into it at all.

I want to know more about the Farmers too. Especially why, if they really are noncorporeal beings, they would need farms in the first place. I'd also like to know what the Cattenni are going to do without their masters.

I'm not sure that they are noncorporeal - if by that you mean they have no physical bodies. They may be shapeshifters, which being physical would need sustainance; they may have only one form, but telepathic enough to transmit images so that the Botanists would see forms they were comfortable with. This would also require sustainance.

Actually, I think we don't really know what they are yet. Personally, I got the feeling that what the colonists saw were holograms constructed for their benefit while the Farmers themselves kept a safe distance away. After all, wouldn't you be cautious about investigating some strange alien lifeforms that had suddenly appeared and taken over your real estate?

Well, they were telepathic enough to answer specific questions that had not been verbalized, and to provide more information than was actually spoken. I just figured they also made the Botanists see what they were accustomed to rather than something scary.

I personally think that the Farmers knew what was going on the whole time and was just going to help in sutle ways. They aren't a violent species but they don't like seeing other beings hurt or used in a bad way. As to what they are I'm not sure. They don't give any other name other than the Farmers that I can remember. I always thought that the Farmers were like parents letting their new found alien children figure things out for themselves and at the same time protecting them from being killed or put back into slavery. *shrugs* that is what I got out of it. The Holograms might have also been stuctured for their protection from unknown parasites that human might carry.

That would make the holograms a sensible precaution, then, geisha. And less likely to startle, the way suits would.

The Farmers might also use the holograms to protect them from any harm, in case the people they're speaking to are aggressive. You know how some people will attack anything that's unknown/strange, even if it's more afraid than they are.

Ever since I saw the Babylon 5 Episode where Kosh came out of his encounter suit I can't help comparing his appearance to those of the Farmers when they have their little chat with Judge Iri, Kris etc.

The idea that everyone saw them in a form comfortable to them is the one I like - along with the Kosh-as-an-angel from Babylon 5 coupling with the "Is he not with you" comment about Jesus....

Is Anne a Babylon 5 fan do we know? *g*

Long years ago Anne used to come to chat with us over at the kitchen table and I think I remember that she did like Bab 5. It was a long time ago, though, and I could be remembering wrong.

I've always expected there would be another book with The Farmers taking a central role in it. I've always felt that Freedom's Ransom was open ended enough to make me feel that a further Novel was in the cards.

*grins*

"Freedom's Baliffs"

The Farmer return and want reimbursement for the materials aqquired by the Botanists *g* slightly out of character from what we know of them, but it would be a reason to return

The interesting point is the word "experiment" - when the Farmers are leaving for the last time, taking the remains of their equipment - sounds like they've been assisting with Bubbles et al. in many places....

I don't see the Farmers as a central role. They seem to be more of the parent watching from the bench on the edge of the playground. Only intervening when the children get a scrape or bruise. I also got the impression that they had to take certain actions to preserve their new "anomolies?", and that it may not have been the first time.

No word on a new Freedom book, tho it's left open enough where there could be another one. We'd love to see one with more of the Farmers in them for sure!
I've thought of the Farmers kind of as the Beings in one of the last Dune books that Herbert himself wrote, where the latest Duncan Idaho clone discovers them. Been a LONG time since I read those books but they came to my mind when the Farmers first showed up on Botany.

I need to re-read my Dune series again soon as soon as I finish all of theses again. I too would love to see another of the Freedom books, or any new book of any of the series.... come to think of it.

I agree that the Farmers were only a Holo. To protect thenselves and the others from each other. I would love to see a new Freedom book. I know on the old KKT there was title for a new one but that was a long time ago. I'm just have to keep waiting, so many books only one pair of eyes

I want another Freedoms book! I waited 9 months to find Ransom and devored it so fast it was disappionting. I want to know more about the farmers too. If Anne does not feel up to another Freedoms... Maybe she would let Todd?

Todd is an excellent writer and would give justice to his mums series. I know...Maybe Todd wants to write his own worlds...selfish of me to think it.
Might help to get the creative juices flowing though
