You're so right, Hans. An interesting historical footnote - her brother was killed in the opening weeks of the First World War, so the drab dress is appropriate, featuring a 'mourning' rosette. Conventions were more rigid in those days.

Nice images, folks! I was talking to a freind of mine who into this, and if I had a negative of the image he has the equipment to scan it. Or glass slides got to see dad's pictures from when he was in the Army before I was born.

Yep, Ginny - Do it as soon as you can! I'm trying to prise my parents' Single Eight Kodachrome movie stuff of the family in the 50s, 60s, and 70s from my sister's cellar, where it is mouldering and fading by the year. I want to get it onto DVD before it's too late.

You want old? This is my great uncle Mike, when he was about 3...so the picture had to be sometime in the early to mid 1920s...

Farclas...your Grandmother is very lovely. To me you seem take after her, at least in facal features. Your photo is extremely beautiful. If you were raised with photos like these, it's no wonder you took it up so well... in your adult life.

You know, Farclas, I was thinking about asking more about here because I was reading a Mercedes Lackey novel in the Elemental Masters series at the time. "Phoenix and Ashes" is set in the time of the first World War, in the UK and she seemed as if she had just walked out of that novel! Almost bizar that...

Here's another one for you then Farclas. Taken 11 years later (they've now gone digital but still getting the same look as the old equipment). Jube forgot to put her hair up to make it more "real"....

Spacedog the hair would've looked period-OK if it had been curled, or simply tucked up under the bonnet, since the picture's posed and you're standing around in a posed picture. The real giveaway in both pictures is the hoop. My period costume has six of them - but then I do a lot of walking in the costume, because I'm guiding in an old house which has 2 1/2 acres of grounds, so I don't want things falling apart. (They have, on occasion, and I finished up trailing two yards of plastic aquarium tubing which makes a lighter mock crinoline than the usual curtain wire.)

Vyon, it is a single hoop but the costumes are designed to go over one's everyday clothes, with velcro etc at the back so that one can put it on quickly when they're taking these photos. Most of the ladies who volunteer at Sovereign Hill have several hoops on and wear proper clothes of the 19th century. These were made so those of us in the 21st century can try them on. Unfortunately it makes me (with all my regular clothes underneath) look bigger then I actually am

Love you too mate but I at least admit to 99% of my failings and cherub-like ways, the rest I prefer to forget occasionally
