Default Hans' USA visit (2)

I'm starting a new thread as to not let anybody waiting too long before the photos are downloaded.

Where were we? Ah, yes, in Moab. The day after arrival we dedicated to Canyonlands NP, one of the two national parks in the area we wanted to visit. The day started out great but the weather turned on us a little bit and in the afternoon when we had a sizeable shower! That was the only rain we experienced (apart from some drops in Detroit on our way home) during our holiday, in fact, everywhere we went it was unseasonable dry and hot.

People staring east towards Shafer Canyon and the Colorado River in Canyonlands NP, Utah. You don't want to have a fear of heights at that view point!

The next photo is definitely in the top 3 of this vacation. This is a Pseudo HDR (made with photoshop) of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands NP, Utah. If you want to see it larger (and you might want to) make use of the link to Flickr.

Canyonlands NP, Utah by Hans van der Boom, on Flickr

And here is Mesa Arch from a distance:

Monument Basin close up from Grand View Point overlook. Canyonlands NP, Utah. To get a sense of perspetive notice the dirt road (a good car wide) on the left of the canyon, in the left middle of the photo.

To illustrate the rain pouring down in the afternoon. Rain and rain clouds over Soda Springs Basin and the Green River at Green River Overlook.

A 180 degree panorama (photoshop merge of 5 photos), overlooking Monument Basin from Grand View Point overlook.

The next day we visited Arches NP, which is "just across the road" and even closer to Moab than Cayonlands NP.
Here's State Route 191 wending its way through the Moab Fault. On the right you can see the entrance road and the visitor centre of Arches NP, A couple of switchbacks brings you to the top of the east cliff from where I took this photo.

The entrance to the park proper is very impressive:

First stop was Park Avenue, where we walked the Park Avenue Trail that goes along the canyon floor:

A bit further on stands a famous rock formation called Courthouse Towers

And near that you'll find the Three Gossips (left) and Sheep Rock (right)

And before we get to the first arch I'll show you Balanced Rock

In the section of the park called windows we walked the Double Arch trail. this goes behind two other arches called the North (right) and South (left) Window

Delicate Arch as seen from the lower viewpoibt

And a frog perspective shot of Skyline Arch

There's so many arches you just can't see and I can't show them all; one more: Sand Dune Arch which I found special as you have to go through a narrow cleft to get to it. The sand is like red powder:

Wow, Wow, Wow! You made it to the Grand Canyon - during good conditions too. What a fantastic set of photos. Was the bus route along the west rim open? It had been closed for years during both of my last visits (2005 and 2008).

I've never seen Las Vegas. Is it as over-the-top as it seems from the photos?

Aye, Steven, Las Vegas is as over the top as you can imagine

As for the bus at Grand Canyon NP, I wouldn't know. We had the hired car but I must admit I didn't see a regular bus service bt I also did't look for it. Since we alread had done the west part and the bright angel trail years ago and more or less skipped all the eastern viewpoints at the time, we now more or less concentrated on those last.

Cars are no longer allowed west of the bright angel trail, so you have to travel to those viewpoints by bus, except the route was closed on both my previous visits. Still, it's an excuse to go back yet again some day...

Actually, all those other places who photographed are a good excuse to go back to the south west USA.

Did you visit the Desert View watchtower? It looks like your colorado river picture might have been take from there. The tower is a good place from which to stitch together a panorama.

Correct Steven, the watchtower, was our first stop after the entrance and I also took panoramas there

For those curious, this is the watchtower Steven talks about

And that's only about 25% of the interesting and spectacular places she lives relatively close to, Steven...

i.e. she lives next door Mesa Verde NP and lives practically inside San Juan National Forest.

How nice to work on pictures from the summer at this time and being able to think back to the nice temps of southern california!

Lady Maelin and her hubby took us to several libraries/library book sales and showed us where they usually get rid of some of their money The fact we had to fly home had us behaving ourselves but we still had to do some repacking at San Diego airport when we went home to avoid serious extra charges because of exra weight!

In the entrance hall of Temecula Pblic Library you will find this fabulous glass mural sculpture:

While in San Diego you have to visit Seaworld! Here's a small 'sealection':

Lady Maelin and Martin with Shamu, Seaworld's mascotte:

And the real thing:

Did this flamingo catch a cold?

The arctic experience is fantastic:

and features a walrus who had a dentist cap both his teeth

You really have to go and see it all yourself; Seaworld is worth a visit (or two)!
Of course we needed to et to the Pacific Ocean Beach, having started at the east coast, we needed "closure" at the west coast

Sunset Cliffs Boulevard:

From there our friends took us to Point Loma (Cabrillo Monument) for breathtaking views at San Diego:

and the Pacific, here the "new" Point Loma Lighthouse:

this means, of course, that there is also an old Point Loma Lighthouse (museum):

The end of our vacation draws near; only one installment to go.

Nice ones Hans, I shall have to see if I can find the image for a stain glass at our library, its not quite a showy as one posted but it a perfect way into that section of the library.

Nice images!
