No idea. If it doesn't say where you've been looking, I'd go and re-read the story about Aramina in TGWHD to check on how commonplace gelding is in general. I've a feeling it isn't -- IIRC, there's a scene where several of the holder boys are said to be riding stallions. On the one hand, he wouldn't want his gitar damaged. On the other, he's a strapping bloke and you'd expect him to ride a stallion simply for the prestige and machismo it adds to his rank. A well-trained stallion shouldn't be a problem even if he doesn't ride as much as he used to.

[But I totally went there. Obviously.]

I suspect gelding would be normal practice for stock not required for breeding. The Beastcraft Hall would keep the best stallions and mares, while selling some decent unneutered animals to Lord and Lady Holders who wanted them. Most ordinary holders and crafters would want docile, sturdy animals with turns of work in them.

Without reading Masterharper of Pern again, I couldn't speculate about his black runnerbeast. Was that the one he rode to Ruatha to see what Fax was up to?

Robinton's main time for riding runnerbeasts would have been as a young journeyman moving from one post to another. Status would not have been a major consideration then. As Masterharper he had to visit various holds to arbitrate disputes and would need a quality runnerbeast, but a reliable gelding would surely do. Masterharpers are supposed to display wisdom, not horsemanship. And if he had his own stallion, he'd have to exercise it daily.

Red face Re: Quick canon question...

He sounded like a stallion, for he was hard to handle till Robinton was in the sadle, using lumps of sweetener as a bribe, they would tack him while still in his stall for no one could get near Robinton to give him his bag on the first time he tried riding from Telgar Hold to the Harper Hall

Recall Skinny (sp) from Moreta he was a gelding, and Squealer (sp) was not gelding for he was four turns and full male

I'm not a horse person, this just what I remember from reading/listening to the books
