She would have thought of it from having to use it on her hands after the "fish incident" when she arrived at Harper Hall. It would still be fresh in her head after being told that they would try to help her fix her hand.

The Threadscore incident happened a few turns after Menolly arrived at the Harper Hall. What she got from Master Oldive at that earlier time was a mild numbweed-based ointment for the scar on her hand, and a scented oil for the cracks in the fire-lizards' hide (the one he made for the ladies of the Hold).

What she used on Jaxom was definitely cosmetic (skin-coloured and opaque), as it was meant to hide the Threadscores. It might also be part of a harper's disguise kit if he was away on 'Harper Hall business'. (Or for a boy soprano singing a female role in the plays.)

I wouldn't have thought that the trebles would have needed make up to sing a female role: they weren't acting, just sing oratorio-style.

Piemur said that without the girl students, he'd have to sing female parts in the plays, and "that'd be dire". We never read about an actual performance of this kind (apart from the impromptu rehearsal Menolly conducted in the Dining Hall), so who knows if it's just a choral performance or more like an opera? Piemur has no problem singing solos, but I can definitely see a 10-turns-old boy objecting to performing in a dress and wig.

We also 'see' it in Dragonsdrum, when the choir singing the opening, and Piemur's voice breaks, for sing of the Lessa's Ride.

That's still only a practice, with no indication how it will be performed.
