That's wonderful Larry! My church is steeple-less, but I think people are undecided on whether they'd like to have one or not.

Do you know that you might get the steeple to start bringing in revenue, by renting it out to cellular companies for use as an antenna? Linky-linky

It took us almost 50 years to decide to put it up. Now they wished they had done it years ago.

It is too small for a cellular antenna and made out of metal that would block the signal.

It's always encouraging to see churches moving forward in these times. A metal steeple is probably a good idea. I know wooden ones are given to rot and very expensive to keep in good repair.

Looks like a nice addition to the building, Larry To me, an old European, it makes the building look more like a church A church needs at least one

Good going Larry. Congrats to your congregation!

The church I go to (Anglican) is a Grade 1 listed building so the Diocesan Advisory Committee and English Heritage won't let us put anything up on its precious fabric.

I'm don't entirely blame them but we wanted to hide some photovoltaic cells behind the tower parapet to run the intruder alarms and weren't allowed to.

And as for aerials! Actually we didn't even get as far as asking the Diocese; the cell companies turned us down flat when they found we'd got twelve bells in the tower. Something about the bells affecting the standing magnetic waves when they were rung.

No, he did not. It was the vicar, with the rope, behind the church

I love bells! (from a resonable distance, of course! ) When I lived in Ringwood in Hampshire there was a church in town with bells they rang sometimes. It's a very complicated procedure and I was always a little awed by the whole thing, (Of course these days a lot of bells are rung by computers)

As practiced in England, bell ringing is a beautiful piece of applied mathematics, as opposed to the European/American tune playing variety.

The number of patterns possible with our twelve bells is a very large number indeed. And of course we can also ring patterns for 10 bells, 8 bells .... etc

Colonel Mustard chased the Vicar and Madam Scarlet away from behind the church with a lead pipe!

I like the mathematical bell ringing. I learned a little about it years ago because my curiosity was piqued by an old Dorothy Sayers novel. I am amazed at how complicated the rings sometimes get and awed when I think of the people who execute (is that the right word??) the peals.

Colonel Moutard est un trouble-fete.

Yes I enjoyed Nine Tailors too. The campanology anoraks reckon she made about three mistakes in the changes, but I'm blowed if I could spot them. And they didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. I think my favorite D.L.S. is Gaudy Night.
