So, a few days before EuroCon I embarked upon attempting a new style of dagger, or 'letter opener' that I'd not previously tried. I knew that I wanted to give her a token something, and Cheryl mentioned giving her one or two of my Marks.
I went to my grandfathers place of work so I could use his lathe, bansaw and sander, as well as all the other bits like wax and friction polish - and I took my pyographer with me so I could get everything done there. This was the outcome. ![]() And here is a close-up of the detail... ![]() The dragon was an original design I had someone draw expecially for me and my woodwork projects...and I'm sure you'll all recognise the Harp. ![]() It's made out of Ash (The lighter wood) and Mahogany, (The darker wood). From drawing the plans to having the finished product, it took around 9 or 10 hours to create. I also added in a few marks anyway... ![]() So all in all the gift took around 15 hours or so to do. I gave it to Anne and mentioned it could be ornamental or used as a letter-opener. (Note to self, send Anne a letter and in it ask her if she opened it with said piece. xD) She replied it'd also do very nicely against Vampires. xD (Although I'm not sure how common they are in Ireland. ![]() I was pleased with it. ^^ Any comments on how I could improve? NOTE: I also need a new Pernese Woodworking Project. ¬.¬ Anyone read RoP recently? xD |

That's beautiful, Sara! If you have the materials you could make a series of those with emblems of the different weyrs and crafts. I'm betting they'd be very popular!

Sara, Your letter opener/belt knife...was and is a beatiful piece of art. I am so happy that I was able to see it before you gifted it to Anne. I am sure that it will be a treasured momento of Anne's and her visit to Copenhagen Eurocon.
P.S. Perhaps you should consider a project of making yourself Pern/Dragon bookends...I am sure you are going to need something to help hold up your growing collection!!!

What a great idea, Maelin, bookends!
Anyway, the pics are nice but seeing the real thing was even nicer and Anne liked it very much indeed. I was standing next to her when Sara gave it to Anne at the end of the booksigning. Well done Sara! ![]()

Everything looks incredible, and you have a wonderful talent for it. Sometimes I wish I could draw really well, but then I remember that I have a great talent for music, so I realize that I'm still lucky

Wow...those are incredible sara!! To be talented like that ...nicely done!! And may I add my admiration as well, in regards to the dragon design. I have to admit I spent almost 5 minutes admiring that alone, let alone the whole "dagger"!! I too would be more than happy to buy one like that if you chose to make more!! (And perhaps a Beasthealer mark!! If I couldn't ride a dragon, my trade would be/is vet medicine!!

Steven, All in all I am just glad that you were there to take the photo...and I do wish that Sara was in this one with Anne....she and I would both have loved that.
I had wondered about Anne's neck piece, and if it was made for her? Annie did a great job in makeing it for her....it is very lovely. Thank you kindly for telling us where it came from.

I had to all but put my hands behind my back because I was shaking, hoping she liked it...^^;
Although she had mentioned about it being a shame that manual labour in terms of crafts and whatnot was on the rapid decline. (In a reply to a question regarding to the crafthalls on Pern during the GoH interview). I'm at Uni now, but I will be doing my best to draw up some plans for some more projects I hope to do over the Christmas Break. At the moment, I'm having to teach myself to draw what I see in my head, and I've already got one or two rough sketches sorted out. @ Lady M - I will be doing bookmarks on your suggestion. ![]() |

There are still marks for sale (if I'm not mistaken).
It was only a limited run, I think Sara said, so any collector should grab their chance!

Sandi's actually right here...^^; I seem to have lost one in the attic somewhere. It's probably rolled down the back of the wooden panels, which'll make it a so-and-so to try and find.
And P'ter, I'm doing English for a reason...xD I'm absolutely hopeless at math anyway. |

fantastic letter opener - and i agree with Maelin with the bookends - v. good idea
![]() another idea could be to make a firelizard staff (though who knows what you'd do with it, maybe decorational only) with a firelizard sitting on top and its tail curling/spiraling down around it..?? |
