Default Dragonwriter - A Tribute to Anne McCaffrey and Pern

Haven't seen a post about this yet so in case someone missed it:

http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/02/mic...reys-menagerie

A tribute book is coming out in august with stories of our beloved Anne.

Michael Whelan cover, which looks gorgeous as always.

Confirmed contributors: •Elizabeth Moon, David Brin,• Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, •Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Richard Woods, Jody Lynn Nye, Angelina Adams.

Todd is editing, and probably has a couple vignettes of his own, I'd imagine.

Cool!

There is one in the Library Cafe. Not a book I'm interested in but I know there are those who will enjoy it.

Post Re: Dragonwriter - A Tribute to Anne McCaffrey and Pern

Just read this from https://www.facebook.com/elizabeth.a.scarborough
More news from Heather, the publicist at Smartpop, publishers of the upcoming DRAGONWRITER. Smartpop has booth 4300. I will not be there but Todd McCaffrey and other major names in the anthology will.
Autograph area signing - July 20, 4 – 6 P.M.: Todd, David Brin, David Gerrold, and John Goodwin will be signing copies at Autograph Area 02 (books will also be for sale pre-pub at our booth during the entire convention!).
Our free preview volume includes an essay from the book (specifically, David Brin’s “Anne McCaffrey, Believer in Us”), along with some exclusive sketches of the Dragonwriter cover from Michael Whelan. It’s available at our booth all convention.
Booth visitors can enter to win a 24x30” art print of Dragonwriter’s cover art signed by Todd and Michael Whelan. All they have to do is ask us to scan their badge.
We’ll also have a new prize wheel this year that people can spin to win prizes, which include, among others, Dragonwriter art postcards for the book featuring four different Michael Whelan sketches.
You can link directly to our post, which includes all the details on these as well as our other freebies and panels, here: http://www.smartpopbooks.com/san-diego-comic-con-2013/.

Okay, and I will be at San Diego and able to go to their booth. So if anyone wants me to pick up an autographed (by the folk present) copy of the book or preview book , let me know. There is fedex at the con so I can ship it out ASAP if you need-need it, or if you wait til Monday I can mail out the old fashioned way. Do let me know within the next couple days because I'll be at the con after that and pretty busy (not always checking the internet).

PS - let me know if you want it personalized or not, and what exactly you want! Unfortunately, I won't have Cavatica's autograph, which is the important one. Unless she decides to fly out last minute!

PPS - Not offering to BUY you books. You'll have to paypal me the cost of book + shipping. Should have clarified earlier!

Kindan, let me know your paypal particulars and please buy one for me, signed and personalized by Todd please. Tell him it is for me, Hans van der Boom.
If you want some money up front, or all up front if you already know the postage (cheapest will do fine, well packaged please), then I will be happy to pay all in advance.
I only want the complete book. Any extra signatures will be nice but you need not go through extra lengths to get them.

We'll ask Charlotte to sign a sticker and paste that with her story that is what some of us did with Forty Years of Pern.

I trust you guys not to stick me with a book! I'll get it picked up and signed/personalized for you (and got Samsara too!). I know 2 or 3 of the other authors will be sitting right there with Todd so will get you those sigs.

Thanks Kindan, I really appreciate it!

I must admit I'm not familiar with the other 3 contributors who will be signing with Todd. I definitely wont' say no to them signing, however I would prefer it if they signed on the title page of their own essay, and not on the title page of the book itself. If that is too messy, don't worry about getting their sigs.

I would like for Todd to personalise and sign the main title page of the book, but his is the only sig I want on there.

Thanks again, this really means a lot to me!

Well David Gerrold is famous for writing the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles," so he's a pretty big name. David Brin is a pretty darn famous sci-fi novel author in his own right. I'm not sure who John Goodwin is.

Ah, thanks for the info. I remember that Star Trek episode!

I've not been able to find out who John Goodwin is either.

So I'm back from the con, and read the whole book on the flight home. Overall, it was really well done, and gave a whole host of perspectives and interesting opinions on so many aspects of her life that I was pleased, and as an avid fan, I felt like I learned quite a bit (which is good!). As always with something with multiple authors like this, there are some really really good essays and some that feel more like they're talking about themselves than Anne. I think the bulk of my favorites come not from the bigger name writers, but from the people who were personally close to Anne.

Will get these out for those who requested tomorrow

Oh! and John Goodwin is the publisher of Writers of the Future. I met him. He's a great guy.

Glad you had a good time Kindan, and that you got to meet the mysterious John Goodwin!

I'm really looking forward to reading the book. It'll be a little bittersweet I think, but that's to be expected I suppose...

What else did you get up to while you were there?

Thanks again!

I just saw on Amazon that if you want this in the UK it's available for pre-order at a slight discount. Not as good as a signed copy, of course, but these days any saving is worth its weight in dragon you-know-what

Was a super fun time. I recommend SDCC to anyone, but it's a vastly different experience than Dragon*Con to be warned. You can hang out with my growing posse if you do come one year though!

Did a LOT of partying, saw a cool pilot for a new JJ Abrams TV show, of course picked up Dragonwriter and read the whole thing (Hans was mentioned by name in the book, spoiler!), got ARCs of two other books that aren't out yet. Took some pictures too but i won't co-opt the thread too much.

I overheard a conversation from the publisher that sales of this are doing very well. I won't give specifics because I probably wasn't supposed to hear it, but that's good to know there's a lot of interest in our beloved Anne.

Just got my copy of Dragonwriter today!!!

Naturally, I went straight for the Whelan concept art pages, and I am puzzled about something. Whelan writes that his dream scene that ended up on the cover of ATWOP actually got written into the book by Anne. But I don't remember a scene like that?

Figured I'd ask here if anyone knows (for instant gratification ) before I re-read ATWOP yet again.

When F'lessan calls for Jaxom and some others to come see what he's discovered at Honshu. Only when they arrive the fog is too thick for them to see to land. So they perch in trees waiting the the fog to clear. Something like that, anyway. I don't have the book available right now so I can't tell you where in the book it is.

I got my copy last week courtesy of a book token, but today had to take it back as starting at about page 120 every fourth sheet of paper had a ladder-like column of tears just in from the 'free' edge, caused by some form of mechanical handling.

That would be utterly awesome if they had each contributer reading their own essays.

That said, most of the people in this book are professional authors who do speak at conventions regularly, and I've met the ones that aren't and they're darn good speakers. Would be difficult to coordinate for recording though since the authors live in different areas of the world.
