Smile A "weird search" result concerning my latest Pern acquisitions

When I read the description on eBay I thought it was a typo by the Italian seller But yesterday I received the book and...

It is true! It really does say "Weird Search" in stead of Weyr Search, the story that is included in this Italian paperback titled I Premis Hugo 1967-1968 Ah well, it'll take a special place in my collection

Another special place is reserved for the hardcover of Beyond the Stars that I bought for the illustrations to the story The Smallest Dragonboy. I was very much surprised to discover, after inspecting the book, I had in my hands yet another book not described/listed by Hargreaves, who lists one edition published by Octopus Books in 1983 (in two states) and one edtiion by Cathay Books in 1984. Although my copy is published by Octopus books it states that the edition is exclusive produced for Marylebone Books, in 1986! (it also has the name Marylebone on the spine) and it has a different cover than the two listed by Hargreaves although the cover is in the same style and almost certainly also by Peter Dennis, who is responsible for the interior llustrations, too. I adore the wonderful illustrations and will post two of my favourites here.

First the cover

And here are Beterli harassing Keevan

and the Impression scene

Another recently arrived envelope held two German books. I finally got myself the German paperback of Dragonsdawn, titled Drachendämmerung, with the wonderful Chris Achilleos artwork (titled the Sentinel) that was used by Corgi for their mmp edition of Dragonquest.

The other book in the envelope was Cheryl's copy of the German Bertelsmann Bookclub hardcover edition of Dragonflight (1976) with the curious misspelling of Anne's name (Mc.Caffrey) and the remark inside that it is a "Utopian novel"

That's it for now but if verything goes right I'll soon be able to show you my first Polish language copies!

Hmm, makes you wonder if someone's spell-check got a little over-zealous.

Pretty interesting finds Hans! That Beyond the Stars is really interesting because the cover is the same as two of the three copies that I have but that Marleybone Books bit is totally different. Makes you wonder how many others are out there. Love the illustrations!
I'm glad your weird search resulted in a super find! Congrats on them all!

Cheryl, I suspect you are right But I wouldn't call it over zealous... does your spellchecker knew Weyr prior to you adding it?

Becky, are you sure this cover of Beyond the Stars is the same as your editions and if yes, which editions do you have? If I look at the one BW miniature Hargreaves gives I see a different cover albeit in the same style.

Hans, here is a photo of the 3 different copies I have.

The one on the left is a 1st volume 1983 - Octopus Books - This edition published in 1986 by Cathay Books - with Cathay Books on the spine.

The middle one is a 1st volume 1983 - Octopus Books - This edition published 1984 by Cathay Books - with Cathay Books on the spine.

The one on the right is a 1st volume 1983 - Octopus Books - with St Michaels printed on the cover and spine. No other year printed so I'm guessing it's a 1st edition of sorts. (I also have another copy of this one that's a second impression in 1984, again with St Michaels on cover and spine)

If this was a text book for schools that could be the cause for all the different editions and publishing houses?

Becky, I don't think is is a text book version but I am not sure, maybe it's a special UK text book version? I did see the official US text book version at Anne's and that's altogether different.

The cover of the two on the right is the one depicted in Hargreaves, the one on the extreme left (Cathay 1986) is like the one I have, which also sounds most right since my (exclusive for Marylebone) is from the same year. Mine (and yours) have that name on the spine, right?
I was just surprised that Matthew had the older ones but apparently did not know of the later one(s?), because with a series like this one wonders if there aren't any more than the four we know of now
Plus I'm even more surprised (or am I missing something) that Hargreaves does not write about the cover differenbce between the Cathay and the earlier Octopus/St. Michael editions while he does mention all three... I am now suspecting Octopus Books gave him the data on the editions but only sent him (a picture) of their latest issued edition with the new cover art. That would explain the omission, which is not usual for Matthew since he is relatively meticulous when covers and covert art is concerned.

"covert art" -- *giggles* maybe that's why he didn't mention it, it was covert!

Both cover art pictures really have a Star Wars feel to me. Anyone else?

Well, Lucas's Escape from the Death Star story is in the book and with Star Wars being so popular I guess they chose that to be the basis for the cover.
I too thought the covers had that feel to them.

:P Cheryl

Am I making fun of your typos in Dutch? Never!

But I think you might en right and if not the cover is merely meant to catch young people in general, as the stories are obviously aimed at that age group.

In Britain "St Michael" is usually the trade mark of Marks and Spencer. Is it possible that they put out an exclusive?

I love seeing all of the different covers of the same book. The last time Hans put up two different covers of Dragonflight...I found them both at the World Con. Maybe this means I will find some of these too...would be nice if it worked that way.

I am with you all with thinking the cover probably had something to do with Star Wars

Hans...GREAT FINDING......CONGRATULATIONS !!!

P'ter, I don't know. Think you we might be able to find out? How? By mailing M&S? But it's so long ago... Do they have a book dept.?

Anyway... Marylebone, isn't that a London neighbourhood?

I didn't realize they were different in every country (though I rather guessed it from Cris's post). I just knew about the bazillion and one special editions they've made. We have the Star Wars edition at home.

At WeyrFest people have brought in Pern-opoly boards they custom made (by pasting new labels over a regular board).
