Thanks Ann-Marie, do you know how many falls there are in NY that look similiar but are not what you're after? I think I went through several, asked about some and discarded others before I got the right one. I'm sure others were in the same boat.

Actually, Cohoes Falls are one of the larger in the state. And when they were working there in the 1800s (I think), the full skeleton of a Mastadon was found. He was reconstructed and stands in our library.

What jube said. Maybe the pic I saw was from a different angle so it looked different, or there's two with Cohoes in the name and I"m thinking of another one. Forget it.

Well I flumoxed AnnMarie by refering to the falls as 'Ga-ha-oose'. Obviously 'Cahose' is an Anglic version but apparently it is the Mohawk native name for them and means "the place of the falling canoe".

Rather appropriate, but I wonder which poor idiot went over the top.

I have never heard it called "Ga-ha-oose" in 45 years, not even in the museums. Will have to check on that. It also makes no sense, since the canoe going over was an English convention... the original story is that Hiawatha, when bringing the Confederacy to the tribe here, told them to name a test... the test was that he would climb a tall pine at the top of the falls, and they would chop it down. If he surived, they would believe he'd come from the Great Spirit to lead. He agreed. As the tree was going over the falls, he yelled "CAOHOES". When he was found calmly making his breakfast the following morning and smoking a pipe, they signed up for the Confederacy, and the name "Cohoes" stuck to the area.

Tresa, most of the images taken of the falls are taken from further down river than where I was to take this one; they are usually more straight on shots, so I can see where the angle might have been confusing. There are no other falls in this state with Cohoes in their name.
