Exclamation Pern Hardcovers (for now)

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of trying to expand my Pern Collection (it is severely lacking a few key items ), and I was wondering if any of you might have some items I was looking for.

I should be clear though - I am really only putting feelers out for the moment. Some of you have already made me some generous offers, and I would like to try conclude those transactions first. I wont actually have the money to make any more purchases for at least another 2 weeks...

I am looking for any hardcovers that might be out there in the following titles:

Dragonflight
Dragonquest
Dragonsong
Dragonsinger: Harper of Pern
The White Dragon
Dragonsblood (by Todd)
Get off the Unicorn
Dragonseye

I do have a few items I would be willing to trade:

Dragonskin
Dragonheart
Damia
Crystal Line

(all these books are UK 1st Edition hardcovers in excellent condition)

If anyone thinks they may able to help, I would be very happy...

Thanks!

Pernaficionado was after the "Dragon's Kin" in hardcover, pm her to see if she's still after it as she may want to trade/swap with you. I know at one stage, I had a copy but I sold it before she could say yes then Larry helped me out. So figured I'd pass the message on as she may still want it. Thanks.

I would look at some of the bookclub editions, especially as I dont have any kind of hardcovers for some titles. I would also consider club editions of titles I already have (if the cover art is different, which it might be between US/UK editions). Living in Australia, I get the UK hardcovers when they come out, but rarely see the US ones in the stores here. Oh, thats right - I'm in Australia, so keep this in mind re postage costs... If you're still intersted, just let know what you do have, and we can take things from there....

Thanks!

What are friends for Pern?

By the way, Samsara, I'd help out if I could but nowhere near going to any 2nd hand bookstores etc at the moment and that's including going to Melbourne for awhile. I say this as we seem to have a lack of used books in the area at the moment so I'll look for you but can't promise anything at the moment.

I would love to trade! I’ve never done this before, but would love to try! I, too, could get you any others and add them to the package, if I find them at my half price book store. The store has a decent selection and I might go there on Thursday. I’m looking for a lot of the same ones you are (Dragonflight, quest, white, singer, etc.), but right now they are out of my budget since they are selling quite high. I collect for the TRUE first editions, Hardbacks, different cover art, and of course, anything signed, all in very good condition. Here’s a list of some, but if you have books with different cover art than the US editions, I would like them too (especially Pern) even if they aren't the True first editions, but are still first editions. LOL! Does that make sense? I think the cover art for UK’s editions are prettier that the US editions!
Ones you mentioned below- Dragon’s Kin, Dragonheart, Damia, and Crystal Line
Red Star Rising-HC,Bantam, 1996
All the Weyrs of Pern-HC, Bantam 1991
Skies of Pern-HC, Bantam 2001
Moreta-HC, Severn House, 1983
Killashandra-, HC, Bantam, 1986
Nimisha’s Ship-HC, Bantam, 1998
Power Lines-HC, Bantam, 1994

I assumed it was a Book Club Edition (BCE) because it has the white box with the numbers 15673 in it on the back cover and no price on the DJ. The copyright page doesn’t say what it is, but the date is 1989. Its all very confusing! I looked it up in Phil S-P Biblio and my book matches up with the ISBN # of the first edition and date of 1989. So I guess it is a first edition. The copyright for the book club edition is 1990 and the # is 56737 (mine says 15673 which is close, therefore I was confused!). I couldn't find very much about it on Hans webpage(although, I was in a hurry). Either way, the book is sadly water damaged, but makes a great reading copy.

Yes, Book Club versions may have an edition in them, but that little white box and lack of a price do indeed indicate a book club edition. And yes, it can all be very confusing!!!

Power Play-HC, Bantam,1995

I have never done this before either Dragonbuddy, so you're not alone there!

I can definately trade you Crystal Line & Damia. Because I'm new at this here are the details of the books, so you can check them to make sure that they are the editions you are looking for:

Crystal Line (1992 Bantam Press, ISBN = 0593 025547, cover art by Rowena)
Damia (1992 Bantam Press, ISBN = 0-593-02374-9, cover art by Romas)

I'm not sure if I can trade Dragon's Kin yet as someone has already expressed an interest in it, but I will let you know when I hear more... Dragonheart was a typo (I'm really sorry ), it should have been Dragonharper, but again I wont know about that one for another week or so. The two books of yours that I'm most interested in are Dragonseye and Renegades... What do you think? As for the other titles you're looking for, I have seen some of them in second hand bookstores here in Perth (remember I'm in Western Australia, because postage can be a little scary... ). I'll check them out for you (availability, condition, etc..) and let you know... In the meantime, if the 2 books I definately can trade are what you're looking for, let me know & I will keep them for you until we can strike a deal....

Damia and Crystal Line would be great! I'll take Dragonharper too! Let me know about Dragon's Kin. Hold any of them for me if you can. That would be great if you could check the availability, condition, and price of the any others if you have the time. I'm looking for books without writing, marks, dents, stamps, ex-libs, rips, etc. I'm sure you get the picture and you perfer your books the same way!I don't know how much books are down there. Around here, (in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the half price book store) they run from $6.98-$3.98 USD. What's the Australian equivalent to that? At the store I go to, the books themselves are in great condition, the tricky part is finding dustjackets without rips and dented corners. Also you never know whats going to be there. Sometimes I call first, before I drag my baby the whole way to the store. Really, I'm in no rush. I would rather take my time and really get the books I want than blow my book budget. I would also like to figure out how to send you pictures of the books so you can see them. I know shipping will be high so I want to make sure you like the books. It might be easier for me, if you PM your email. Are there any others you're looking for? I'm really excited to get books from Australia! That seems so far away to me! LOL! I love this forum! Trading books will be fun!

Ginnystar I'll keep my eyes open for you! I don't think my copy has those articles in because its 1989.

DragonBuddy, most new books in Australia are between $20 and $50 Aussie dollars. Secondhand will range from 10c to $12 depending on where you go to. My local library charges $1-2. The 3 op-shops (charity shops) that are closest to me, charge from 50c to $4. Don't have a secondhand bookshop as that closed down about 10 years ago.

If you want postal costs from Australia to USA, go to:

http://www.auspost.com.au/

It's pretty helpful, once you've worked out how to use it. I don't know if other countries have something similiar or not. I forgot to add that once you've got postal costs, add $1-$2.20 if using a padded bag. "Tough" bags are about the same price.

Thanks, That was helpful! I also figured out that $1 USD=$1.16 AUD or $1 AUD=$0.85 USD. I used yahoo currency converter so I have some idea how much we're talking about.

Its a shame to let it go, but if DragonBuddy wants Dragon's Kin you can trade it to her, Samsara. She wants the same titles I did but I am not going to have any money at all for the next 4 weeks or more so it would probably work out better if the two of you trade instead this go around. I am sure I will hunt it up somewhere eventually Enjoy your books!!

That's okay, I've found it a helpful tool when selling on ebay, especially on weekends or late at night when post office isn't open and someone wants to know what postal costs are. At least it gives me a rough idea, instead of "oh, I don't know!"

Hey Pern,

Thanks for letting me know! I'm sure you'll find a decent copy of that one relatively easily. I will keep an eye out for you!

Hardbacks of D.Flight, D. Quest, etc. are hard to find and generally expensive to boot...why not try to get these in the imnibus editions, The Dragonriders of Pern (1st 3 books) and the The Harper Hall (next 3 books), they are hardcover, you would have the 1st 6 books of the series and way cheaper than finding the individual books in hardback!

Those bookclub trilogy editions are great to have for long lasting reading copies...and as additions to any AMC *Pern* collection.

Not to mention the fact that there a whole lot cheaper and will save on shelf space for those who are needing both considerations.

Actually I have just purchased a couple of the omnibus editions, but I still have to have the individual ones also. I dont care how much they cost. One day I am going to own those books even if it kills me!
