It's not the fact that cat and back don't rhyme, but that both lines have 8 syllables, 'firelizard' and 'dragon' make the line have too many syllables so it doesn't 'fit' when reciting it.

You could use 'flit' and it would fit.

(I remember an anti-insect spraygun called 'Flit')

How about "A dragon can't change its color" (from "A leopard can't change its spots") or has that already been done?

Bur Sandi, that saying has a negative meaning and I don't think Pernese (or Terrans for that matter) would associate dragons with a slightly negative saying like the one you mentioned

Of course, it could have a totally different meaning on Pern...
hint: sexual preferences? But wouldn't that be that "a rider can't change their dragon's colour"

Well, come to think of it, I think F'nor said something along the lines of that because his brown couldn't turn into a bronze. I hadn't really thought of it as especially negative, more like an "I am what I am" sort of thing, but I do see your point. I think it has also been observed that you can't turn a Watchweyr into a dragon, which is sort of the same thing.

I don't see it as a negative necessarily, as Sandi said. Nor does it have to have a sexual preference conotation. Dragons of different colors have different abilities based on their size, e.g. greens and blues are more manuverable in the air while golds and bronzes have more stamina.

The etymology of someone changing his colours lies in medieval times when changing your colours meant becoming a traitor (changing to the colours [read: coats of arms] of the enemy).

The Dutch equivalent of the saying is always eant negative. More positive versions being like the one Sandi mentioned along the lines of "you are what you are".

I accept that this may come across silly because the original mention says "can't change its colour", but I am talking about perception here which is of course personal; hence the different interpretations.

I don't think it's silly. I think this makes an interesting example of cultural differences. They can come up, even among people who have been conversing for years. To me, that phrase means no more than saying you can't take the salt out of the ocean. To you, and probably some others, it implies treason and duplicity. It makes me wonder again how translators deal with similar issues when converting something in, say, American English, to German or French or Dutch. I suspect it makes quite a challenge because even the most literal translations may actually suggest a totally different meaning than an author intended.

Yep. I find it awfully disturbing if, when reading a german translation of an englisch book, i notice what the translator didn't get or knew. Kind of catapults you out of the story.
E.g. in (bad) german translations one will often find "Schreiben an der Wand" or "Zeichen an der Wand" which is a literal translation of "Writings on the wall" which makes absolutely no sense in german.

But given the rising amount of anglicisms that make it into the german language this will propably change sooner or later.

I think that 'For the love of little green dragons' was coined by Anne herself a long time ago

I have it on my website since 1999 I think (http://www.pern.nl/archives/sayings.htm)
  • For the love of little (green?) dragons: Pernese saying [RSR/6:159]. A variation of one of Anne McCaffrey's favorite sayings. See also For the love of little green apples.

On Google I saw that Arolos Weyr had this copied to one of their pages but it seems no longer available.
