It's not as if most Pernese children lead a sheltered life. Would there be that many parents who would give such a talk? (Makes me wonder what that would have been like for Yanus and Mavi's kids.)

I don't think they're quite the same. In my variety of English, "Never judge a book by its cover" usually means don't form a negative opinion just from appearances.

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER - "Don't judge things by their appearance only. Originated in the United States. First attested in the journal 'American Speech' (1929). Has been used in Britain since 1954 (Murder in Haste' by H. Gardiner. Found in varying forms..."

"Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" (1996) by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996).

I don't think so. I think it just means appearance. Negative or positive doesn't come into the equation.

There are many times that you can see something pleasing to the eye and find out it is bad, as well as seeing something that is not pleasing yet find out it is good.

And Hans - how about "Don't judge a redfruit by the color of its flesh"? (Only because I bought a canteloupe the other day that looked perfect - and had no flavour whatsoever.)

yes, but it need not mean just ruth. It could mean greens, blues, etc, as the golds and bronzes get all the attention. The other colours can be just as great in different ways

It doesn't really work the same way with the Red Star and dragons, although the sailors might have something like our

"Red sky in morning, sailors take warning
Red sky at night, sailors delight."

In the UK we also have:

Red sky at night, shepherd's delight
Red sky at morning, shepherd's warning

Same principle, different profession! I think that I recall some herder or somebody somewhere in the books making that same statement, or something very like it. Can't remember who, what or where though! Sorry!

The last part could be read as "red star recedes, dragons succede!" "In flight" as in "runs away from, "goes away from"....

I was rereading RoP and found this:

"There's a very old saying... set a thief to catch a thief." From the mouth of Master Robinton himself!

(I hope this wasn't already in here - I skimmed and didn't see it!)

I am FlameCat, and I already have an (old) list up at my website http://www.pern.nl/archives/sayings.htm.

Great find Brenda!

The original purpose of this thread was to make up our own ones -- although I might not have said that very clearly i the original post

But references to "real" ones from the books are, of course, more than welcome!

I know that this isn't a Pernese saying per se, but I came across it and thought that it would be perfect - and could imagine someone like Idarolan or maybe Alemi saying it:

A calm sea does not make a good sailor.

Me too, Gidget. No reason the sailors who went to Pern couldn't bring that phrase with them and pass it along! Or even for it to be reinvented.

Someone posted in the other thread the phrase,

"A weyr is where a dragon is, no matter how it's constructed."

Which I compared to "Home is where the heart is."

Which is even sweeter when you realize that that means a dragon IS your heart.
