Default Chihuly Glass

Living in WA state has so many wonderful benefits. One of them being the fact that the great glass artist Dale Chihuly comes from Tacoma, WA. He's a great supporter of PBS and makes specials to show on TV. I'm watching one now. I love his glass!
If anyone gets the chance to go to the Glass Museum in Tacoma WA, please do! You can watch glass blowers create in the huge facility they have built. There is also a bridge that goes over a road that is full of Chihuly pieces. (they are encased in bullet proof glass cases, someone actually tried to shoot at them and I saw that case and was thankful that they didn't succeed) I'll have to try and dig out some pictures and post them.
Anyhoo, he and his crew went to Waterford Ireland and worked with the Waterford Crystal workers and made a couple of his type of chandeliers that were so beautiful. One was a beautiful emerald green, of course, and the other was clear glass that the Waterford experts cut. Oh, so fabulous!
The things that Dale Chihuly can create is amazing!
If you want to see more..........http://www.chihuly.com/chihuly.html
I'd love to own a piece, but I don't have a few thousand dollars to be able to purchase one.
I checked on eBay and someone is actually trying to sell a 'piece' of a broken vase from a hotel in Seattle. I thought it was a decent sized piece they might have on auction, a couple inches in size anyway, but NO! It's a miniscule fragment! See the auction and check out the second picture, the one with the dime in it! http://cgi.ebay.com/FRAGMENT-OF-CHIH...QQcmdZViewItem There are actually bids on this. I can't believe someone would bid. You need a microscope to even see the thing! I'd end up loosing.

Now for some REAL Chihuly glass! These pictures are of works encased in bullet proof glass in a bridge connecting the train depot in Tacoma, WA to the Glass Museum. The back glass is frosted so that drivers on the freeway below won't be distracted by the art works.

The above are all part of his Venetian series, I think. Very organic feeling glass work.

And now the sky bridge! This photo is with the camera pointing up to the sky.....

These are of his Sea Form glass works.

The vase is awesome -- hope the bidders realize they're just getting a shard of glass. That's one of the most ridiculous ebay auctions I've ever seen.

I'm gonna check out his website in detail later, but his art/glass looks beautiful!

Could it really even be considered a shard? More like a sliver to me.

Yes the vase was beautiful. And I even considered buying the bit til I saw the size (well, LACK of size). His pieces sell for thousands and thousands of dollars. Tho during the PBS fund raising drives he does special pieces and you can get them for fairly decent prices. He also makes framable art from the planning drawings for the pieces and they sell those too.

I was never so surprised as when I went to our local hospital here (not in Seattle) and saw three of his pieces of art (not glass) framed and hanging in the main lobby! Someone had got them off PBS and donated them to the hospital. So going to the hospital is ok with me so long as I can sit for a while and drool. Which I've been able to do recently, since my father in law has been having heart trouble and been in and out of that hospital 3 times this month. But he's out now with 4 stents in his heart. So we hope that does him good for quite a long while.

Please do check out his website. It's got a lot of info about him. He has a swimming pool that he did a bunch of his sea form glass pieces and put them in the bottom and then had a clear unbreakable top over the glass. Then filled the pool! What a neat pool!!!! I'm going to try to find my pics and get them posted this evening.

I saw his glass in the Atlanta Botanical Garden during the Glass in the Garden traveling exhibit. Very cool. If I had time I'd put some of the pics on the web, but alas, the countdown is getting low.

He did a ceiling at the Bellagio too that I've seen.

Oh, that fragment is just ridiculous.

If it was broken during an earthquake, how do they know it was from that vase and not from someone dropping a drink glass.

bleh.

well it does look tinted red, so it's likely not from an ordinary drinking glass. But there's no good proof that it's not a random colored shard from who knows where, not from the hotel/vase at all. The guys certificate of authenticity isn't really worth the paper it's printed on.

Now if there's a unique chemical signature to Chihuly glass, that could be tested, that would mean something. But it'd still just be a tiny shard of glass, which is just plain silly to go ga-ga over.

It's just a teeny fragment of glass! Why would someone bid on it?!

From the quick look i had, that glass is awesome.
And I agree with Cheryl, it's just silly to try to sell a fragment.

Trying to sell it isn't the silly part, bidding on it is.

I'm pretty sure that the various oxides etc used to colour the glass would provide a unique readout using mass spectography. There are two problems.

1) I don't think that there's a forensic database of glass types (not even one held by Lincoln Rhyme).

2) If the sample's that small: end of sample.

This auction is just one proof that anyone will sell anything and anyone will buy it!
I sold a few pieces of the Kingdome in Seattle on eBay. Just hunks of concrete. Did it as a test to see if someone would bid! So when I sold one I put another on and it sold too! I think I sold about 4 pieces. They were just hunks of concrete, but were from the Dome after it was imploded to make room for Quest Field. They got a picture of the hole as verification, but I still couldn't believe people bought them.
This auction just confirms that I could probably sell my toe jam on eBay.

I'd love to own a piece of his glass. But as Bisbe said, I don't have thousands to spare. If they have a PBS fund raising drive and I my inlaws happen to give me some $$ then I might just jump in and get a piece. But they have to coincide and then too, if I had a couple thousand there are a couple of Anne things that I'd like to have.......

Dale Chihuly was on B.B.C.2 tonight (18/08)(in snippets) between 1930 & 2000, if you can find it on the web. It was actually a gardening programme but there he was with some very plant like organic glass.

I THINK he may be on next week too.

Does anyone want a piece of toast with the Virgin Mary imprinted on it? Or Britney Spears' chewing gum? I had to throw those ones in as an example of how ridiculous people can be about selling stuff on ebay. (Nothing against Christians, being one myself but I had to laugh about what sells or doesn't accordingly).

Most of his glass is very organic in form. To watch him direct the other glass makers in creating his pieces is so neat. Glad you got to see him P'ter!

I'm lucky enough (for several reasons) to live in Columbus, Ohio. One of the reasons is the Franklin Park Conservatory. They did a show of his work a few years ago and then bought most of them. As you walk through the conservatory they show up in unexpected places. They won't do another full show of all the pieces for another year or two, but there are always some on display. Pretty awesome stuff.
