Green Some more house renovation and rearranging (1)

Most of you will have read about me adding a dormer window to the house and renovating the attic (where my son's room is).
When I recently had a two week holiday for which the plan was to put in the new pond in my wife's leisure garden (an upgrade from the word allotment ) the weather didn't favour us and we needed a project to tackle (well, we didn't actually need it).
The bathroom was on the roster to be the next renovation project, so we decided to do the ground floor hall and stairs (the bathroom being much too large a project for one week).

Here's a picture of the old hallway as seen from the first flight of stairs:

We started with removing all old wallpaper, whitewashing the ceiling and giving everything that needed paint an undercoat after sanding. I first painted the wall of the lower stairs in a colour called Sienna (after removing wallpaper from that wall too):

I then put a line all around on the wall (to be seen faintly in the pic) to where I wanted the new wallpaper to reach, the top 10 inches I treated the same way as the ceiling, applying something called structure paint. Thius technique should make the small hall look bigger.

We then painted the inside of the front door, the door posts, the wooden side parts of the stairs (which we did not want to have carpeted) and the bottom of the next flight of stairs, that leads to the attic. After that I put the wallpaper up, adding a nice strip as a seperation between the white part and the wallpaper part and after the stairs were carpeted (we had that done as it is rather specialist work) and cleaning up the hall looked like this:

We went out and bought a new mirror for over the old small sideboard and a new coat rack. We also bought a new special mat in frotn of the front door which I cut and laid myself. I also applied strips of imitation stained glass to the front door windows and fixed a new light fixture, that fits better with the kind of Mediterranean style we were after, and added some fake grape vines along the sides of the mirror.

The imitation stained glass family coat-of-arms was made several years ago by my very creative mother. I found a way to attach it in front of the door with a few pieces of copper chain and think the endresult look really fine. Since our family name is under the coat-of-arms we don;t even need our name on the door Here's a closer view:

The bigger pieces of Pern art and stuff and Lady Maelin's art have pride of place in the lower stairwell (there's actually not much room to hang anything on the walls in our house outside the living room because there's books in most of the rooms upstairs) and I put up the two lightly damaged Whelan posters there in the end, too. They could be framed better and nicer but I wasn't prepared to spend the money a real nice frame costs on damaged goods.

And here's the rest of what I put up on the wall of Maelin's art plus a signed promotional poster of the UK edition of The Atlas of Pern. The frame above Whelan's Weyrworld poster holds the congratulations card Anne sent me on the first anniversary of my website, The Pern Museum and Archives. There's still some room left for smaller pics and things.

WOW Hans, that is just lovely...I really like the colors you chose to use in the entrance, hall and stairway. I am so glad that you decided to hang your Whelan prints anyway...you will enjoy them everyday there now. Your hall way is looking more like mine very time I see it...
I am so honored to have my art work hanging in such a warm and lovely home as yours, with such wonderful company, as Anne and Micheal and you...

Your organizing skills are amazing. You should write a "how to" book. I've long been impressed by the way you organize your Pern website and keep all your books and things cataloged. Now I see that you know how to organize other kinds of projects as well. Many of us here (spelled ME!) could use some tips on planning and organizing whenever you might care to drop a few........

Stunning! We've just moved into a bigger place and the best part is the decorating... Although the unpacking is the bane of my existence. We're painting our bedroom maroon on the weekend.
