Default Fandom Memories

So, AMC fandom literally spans decades, and not all of us were around back in the day.

Do you have any fandom memories that younger folks might not know about that you might want to share? Funny things that happened at this or that con, or on a message board, or things that happened if you met Anne or other fans?

I was on the Pern reddit, and someone said a thing about how Pern sounds like "porn", which made me remember this:

Quote:
Back in the early 2000s, a Pern TV show was in the works, with Ron Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame as one of the writers (obviously before BSG, though). It was far enough along in production that there were models of Ruth and actors had been cast I believe, but the plug was pulled because of "creative differences"...that is, the WB was screwing Pern up, and Ron Moore noped out of there or something instead of allowing it to happen.

But at one point, LOTS of fans on the official McCaffrey forum (The New Kitchen Table) flooded the WB's forums, talking about Pern. And a WB forum moderator there added "Pern" to the swear word filter, so that it began to look like all the Pern fans were talking about porn, since the word "Pern" was replaced with asterisks or something like that!
That happened in MY memory, when some newer fans were toddlers or not born yet, and I know there's people who remember things from days when *I* was a toddler or not born yet. (I was born in 1983, so after some of the books were published!)

So I'd like to hear other stories, if you guys have them!

I got to meet Anne at her last Dragoncon appearance. She was very down to earth. On Monday morn when she rolled into the weyrfest room the only thing she wanted was where her grand daughter was. That was 2008, I think.

Some place I have a couple of pictures. Yours are fine, maw. None of us claim to be professional photographers.

One of my least favorite memories was when the Anne Guard got way out of hand. There would be 8 or 10 people marching in front of and beside Anne's scooter shouting "clear the way!" I heard other people making disgusted comments about this. That was the last DragonCon we attended and I understand things were much more under control the last time Anne went.

My strangest memory was getting trapped in a stairwell in one of the hotels. I thought I'd walk up instead of taking the escalator. Once inside I found all the doors were locked. I had to pound on a door for about ten minutes before some astonished con goer finally let me out. Naturally, I had left my cell phone in the hotel room.

My most favorite memory was giving Anne my cat ears (at that time I was still a Hellkat) and seeing her wear them through most of the rest of the convention. There's a photo of her wearing them someplace.

I only met Anne once, and it was very briefly during a signing. She was signing books in Chicago when she was here when she was made Grand Master. The SFWA page says that was in 2005, so almost 10 years ago. I had a battered copy of Damia, and she told me Afra was her second favorite character, right behind Robinton.

Her speaking voice was much clearer and prettier than I had expected, higher too, even knowing she used to sing. It's one thing "knowing" it, and quite another "hearing" it though.

Having been relatively isolated in a corner of northeast Scotland until quite recently, and with no real budget for travel abroad to any of the big cons, I've never actually been to any of the big ones.

I did however stumble across the phenomenon of filk a few years back (basically - cross folk music with a theme generally centred around sci-fi/fantasy - or check Wikipedia), and got to the UK Filk convention for a few years (sadly not in the last four as the dates simply haven't worked out - fingers crossed next for next year though - for which I will be constructing the most accurate rider's outfit that I can for myself and hopefully my partner as well). Being a relatively small event with a couple of hundred people involved there wasn't any huge drama nor mayhem to relay to you in terms of funny stories. Well, unless you count me discovering the hazards inherent to both stairs and sprung doors when you're wearing a cloak.

The one thing which really struck me there was how universally well known Anne's work was there.

While the genre tends to attract fans of the entire extent of sci-fi and fantasy it really seemed that while there were distinct groups who were fans and/or had in depth knowledge of each of the big names, but it seemed that virtually everyone there knew Anne's works - particularly the Pern novels in detail.

Still never going to forget the double-take I did when walking past one of the concert rooms when the circles were going in the evening and realising that I was hearing the March of The Wings actually being sung - and the *entire* room joining in for the chorus. I remember joining in as well, still half through the door and just standing there for a good five minutes afterwards because I was sort of stunned.

Several songs, cannon or otherwise regarding Pern quite frequently surface both in the main concerts and especially in the circles, but that's still the one which sticks in my head the most, because it was the first time I ever encountered that - and there's just something somewhat mindblowing about encountering a room of sixty odd people all belting out a song like that.

I know there was something else that I was going to add here as well, but can't for the life of me remember what it was now...Will come back to it if I remember later.

I've had the honour to meet Anne several times, the first in Orlando when she did a book signing and was there to witness a Space Shuttle launch.

Then several times at Dragon Con. The first and most cherished to me,since we'd corresponded over some details is when I brought my map (flying and carrying that thing on a train was a story in itself.) to show her. Oh to weigh that much now!

Of COURSE there is... The Queen has it If you look close you can see my Tiara is on. Cilla is directly behind Anne who has Cilla's ears on And I'm on the right of her second one on the end.

That's a favourite memory too.. we hellkat were all in front talking and giggling and Anne stopped her talking and asked us" What is with all the ears?"
So we told her and Cilla sacrificed her ears so no one had to leave to get more.

I remember this,I'm glad Ron Moore had the decency and courage to pull out.
He's currently producing a series for Starz, based on Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. We fans are ecstatically waiting and know it's in the best of hands.

Enjoying reading everyone's memories. I will have to look for my pictures. I first met Anne at a lunch with about 12 other people. It was wonderful listening to her share her stories and chatting with everyone.
The next time, I saw her was at World Con in LA but really it was in Anaheim. Anne was an amazing person and I am blessed to have met her.
The last time I saw her was at a book signing with Todd at Mystery and Imagination in Glendale an independent book store owned by a wonderful couple.

Up until I got the Internet and became a member of the OKT, I used to write every year or two to Anne - especially in those years new books were released.

It was always nice to get a Postcard back from her as I tended to do when I wrote.

I went to my first DragonCon in 1999, which was also Anne's first DragonCon. My memories are a bit fuzzy and as I went to several D*C in a row after that, they are all jumbled together, but I remember how amazing it was to get to meet so many other Anne fans in person. I'm an introvert and was overwhelmed with the size of D*C (which was much tinier then than it's grown to now), but the WeyrFest room had a nice small crowd which made it possible to get to meet fellow fans and make new friends.

I don't think I got the chance to meet Anne in 1999 - I don't recall there being a book signing, or maybe I just completely missed it. But I remember the great crowds that would flock to the ballrooms for her two big panels, and watching her zip around on her scooter after one of them. And just how amazing it was to hear her in person, describing her creation of Pern and her life in Ireland.
