Has anyone else noticed this missing line its on pg 110 of the Corgi edition

Quote:
It was over very soon. The young dragons paired
off with boys. Green riders dropped down to carry off
the unacceptable. Blue riders settled to the floor with
their beasts squealing, crooning, flapping wet wings
as they staggered off, encouraged by their newly
acquired Weyrmates.

That's so weird. Considering the astonishing number of typos in the books, though, it's not totally unusual, just very iritating.

I had noticed that before. It is annoying, but not really a typo... more of a mistake with copying... It makes more sense to me like this:

Quote:
It was over very soon. The young dragons paired off with boys. Green riders dropped down to carry off the unacceptable. Blue riders settled to the floor [to help the newly Impressed] with their beasts[,] squealing, crooning, flapping wet wings as they staggered off, encouraged by their newly acquired Weyrmates.
what do you think?

I agree with you c-ris, but I think the mistake must have made at the type setting stage of printing as I can't see Anne making the mistake and missing it althrough the re-writes and in her final manuscript
You don't miss much do you Edith..You must really read very deeply
Nice pick up

I'm not usually known for reading quickly-I speed-read!
though I tend to pick up most things in the first couple of reads. DF has quite a few though apart from odd mistakes-its the worst in the Pern books!
I tend to mentally correct things though!

Colorized to show the missing line from your books.

Hmm, interesting

The US printings (the one quoted is a 15th printing; October 1979), including the original Weyr Search story (in Analog, October 1967) give:

Quote:
It was over very soon. The young dragons paired off with boys. Green riders dropped down to carry off the unacceptable. Blue riders settled to the floor with their beasts and led the couples out of the cavern, the young dragons squealing, crooning, flapping wet wings as they staggered off, encouraged by their newly acquired Weyrmates.

And my Corgi books are indeed missing the "and led the couples out of the cavern, the young dragons" bit...

My questions:

a) I don't own a first edition hardcover British Dragonflight. Could somebody who does check it the abovementioned bit is missing in that editio, too.

b) Not so long ago Anne asked a few fans to send her correction lists for Dragonflight as Transworld (Corgi) was going to do a "re-typeset" -- Finally a chance to give Larth the right colour! -- so, if somebody could check a version/edition that is in the bookshops nowI would be very much obliged, as Anne never said if the corrections were indeed carried out.

Edith? Please give me the details of your edition, i.e. the data on the copyright page? Publisher, edition etc.

Haven't read MY new copy yet, bought cause the old trilogy was falling apart. But it's a DelRey. And a quick look at the Dragondex shows Larth as a brown...Not quite sure where to find that missing line.

Just skimmed and found THIS:
Quote:
"L'tol?" "Yes, a grneerider from S'lel's wing." Page 17.

Tresa, the bit we are looking for is right prior to Lessa's Impression of Ramoth, at the end of Part I.

In my DelRey paperback it is near the end of page 81. So if they used the same data it should still be on that page

However, Anne told me a re-typeset was never proposed for the DelRey editions, only for the UK Corgi (Transworld) ones.
The discrepancy between Larth being brown in the Dragondex (which dates from the mid-seventies) but his "appearance" in the text as a green is a (very well) known one.

Thanks :ok:

Unfortunately, the publishers/editors didn't agree. I know because I went through a whole list of typos and other errors with Anne a couple of years ago. She then put forward the proposed changes but in the end the publishers decided it would cost too much to make them

But I have to confess I didn't spot the missing line that Edith did

Hmmmm. My mom and I did not notice that, very strange indeed. It was probably a typo. I think that their beast squealings and on was talking about newly hatched dragons and their riders.

Must be a typo. I read that part in 2 seperate Dragonflights (My nan's and mine) and mine has the same as yours Edith were's my Nans has the entire proper part with NO typos! Why are there so many typos? Don't the publishers care?

You'll probably find that you nan has a younger book. No, the publishers don't particualrly mind but sometimes they do. Anne's UK agent/publisher (Transworld) gave her the option to review Dragonflight and have it re-typeset (they don't typeset anymore but the term used is still the same).

Anne asked Anneli, Cheryl and me (and probably some others too) to go through the book and send her typo's. If things are correctly done your Nan's book should even have the correct(ed) colour for Lytol's dragon (brown)!

Mind you, this was only for UK editions, not US.
