Default Real surnames

I'm reviving a very old question I once posted (actually, it was my 46th post on Anne's first Kitchen Table Buleltin board )

on 21st October 2000 I posted:
Quote:
I recently received a request from a lady who asked if I could help her with her genealogy. Normally that's not so strange, but she had done an internet search and discovered a genealogy on my site (Elrhan's Pern Site) bearing her family name: Nerat!
Question: Do any of you know, or have encountered, other Pernese names as family names and if yes, which name and where (in which country/countries).
Thanks, Elrhan (Master Archivist and Genealogist)
To which I got one reply... from Anne McCaffrey who posted:
Quote:
Very odd - though I suppose there are only so many combinations of letters for surnames and, with pan-ethnic variety, the odds were one of them would be 'Nerat'. I knew of no one by that name when I named the area.
However, 'Igen' means 'yes' in Hungarian. It was a very hard word to get our Hungarian ward, Josef Kaldi, to say: even in English.
In D'Dawn, I 'borrowed' (with permission) the names of many of my acquaintances since there were 6000-odd colonists.
'Zainal', on the other hand, was chosen as part of the surname of a young email friend of mine.
Elrhan - DID you manage to find her original genealogy? Ciao, Anne Mc
Here, about 6 years after the first posting I ask you:

Have you encountered names you've read in the Pern books, whether used as colonist names or placenames, in real life?

As I've said before: there's a village in France called Pern.

And, since Granath has already mentioned Botany, I knew a Doctor Sarah McDouall when I lived in Cambridge.

This only sorta counts, but on this past Monday's episode of CSI:Miami, one of the villians was named Ms. Moreta. I much prefer Anne's version of Moreta as a heroine!

I was at the Goodwill looking at shirts for embroidered ones, and came across one that said "Wehr Builders". I was wondering why they spelt "Weyr" wrong.

Oh - if you go to Ebay and look up "Ramoth" you do get other hits besides McCaffrey items.

My brother's name is Sean and our family is descended from a Irish/Scottish family known as the Connels or O'connels and I once had a sub teacher with the name Mr. Fallaron. Not exactly F'lar's birth name but its still pretty darned close, I jumped about a foot in the air when he walked into the classroom and said: "G'day I'm Mr Fallaron." He had really dark hair too!

Years ago I met a woman named Shirley Lyons...right after I had read Damia, and she had to laugh when I told her I had just read about one of her future family members...she said that she wanted to read the book.

I don't know where she is now...or if she did really read the book.

I quite often do a Sky Gamestar game called Word Search which is a bunch of letters which can make up lots of words and I am most upset when I can clearly see Pern names/places and it says they don't count

I deal with lots of people in my w**k and hobby (I've worked in a Bank, for British Rail and BT over the last ..ty years; part of my hobby is being the membership secretary for a family history society of over 1500 members!) and I once had a customer whose first name was Nimisha.

Hmm, let's do a google...

Aha, it's apparently of Hindu origin. Interesting.

Don't know if I ever told that I once did a municipal e-center project of which one of managers was called Sylvia Ista. Ista turned out to be a rather rare Dutch surname.

I worked with a Julie Lyon.

She was proud of her name, but if someone dared put an "s" at the end, she'd get mad.

Her reasoning was that "Lyon" was a "white" name, while "Lyons" was "black". Not sure that I agree, but it seemed to make her feel better.

Unfortunately, I can't say I was named after any McCaffrey novel. I had to endure being the misspelt version of 'Sarah-Jane' (I'm Sara-Jayne)...as in the Dr Who companion...>.<

Oh, I also knew a Mr. Bosler. He was a friend of my grandfather's, but we called him 'Bolsa', (as in the wood) since he was a woodturner like my grandfather.
