Red face Funny what you find...

Funny what you find, when emptying a travel bag for use on a new trip....

For the backpack I like to use when I go to cons, and also used on my trip to Europe a few years ago, I found it packed full of old DragonCon program guides, various maps, plane and bus tickets for Europe. And then two very important finds:

My passport (I'd been vaguely wondering where it was)

A gorgeous silver and blue dragon necklace, which I must have bought at my last dragoncon in 2002, then clearly completely forgot about. I suspect I felt guilty for buying it which is why I hadn't upwrapped it when I got home (though looking at the price on the receipt that was with it I can't see why -- just $25). I'll be sure to post a piccy of it when I get home.

Wow, Cheryl! That's a nice set of finds, the passport especially! Those are expensive to replace now.

Nice finds!

If I had the choice between passport and necklace I'd chose the latter one, too Although... that passport might almost be an AMC collectable, as it is surely signed by one of the most avid collectors

Great finds, Cheryl. And I agree, the necklace is the most important one.

Nope, I have to disagree - have you seen the price of a new passport nowadays since the introduction of biometrics? *shudders*

I didn't mean to knock the necklace, but the replacement costs on the passport, as Anneli said, makes me shudder.
I really can't wait to see a pic of this necklace tho!

Nice necklace I lost my favourite one years ago

I think the best find I ever made was when I was going through old clothes to put out for charity. There was one old jacket that I realized I hadn't worn for years, and went through the pockets.

And, lo and behold, I found $50.

I think what comes a close second was when I was emptying drawers in an old cupboard, and right up the back of one was an old cassette of yodeling songs a friend sent to me as a joke.

I never listened to that tape...

Hard to believe you forgot about the necklace but I can totally understand how you could have. I live that sort of life too, very forgetful at the best of times. (hmmm, was going to add something else but I don't remember what it was. see, I told you so!)

In the US it's $97 for adults, plus $60 if you want it fast.

Thanks for the information... I don't think we need to start saving up for them yet ...but we might to decide to go and get ours soon anyways... just in case they decided to raise the price again. You never know when we might decide to take a trip to some distant land...

Don't forget to get a certified copy of your birth certificate. My hubby works in an office where they issue them. He says it's cheaper to order 2--at least in Wisconsin it is--and that way if the feds loose the 1st copy you still have one to send them and don't have to pay extra to get another one from the state fast.

I try to eat elsewhere most of the time, as my mom only cooks burned things. Or really dry unseasoned meat. Or spinach and potato pancakes...*shudders*

That plus all dinner convos invariably turn to my ineptitude and insubordination...

Lady Maelin, I would get your passport before the first of the year. That is when they are going to be adding an RFID chip into the passport itself. This can then be read by a scanner and not necessarily the one the screeners are using. If you get it now it is good for 10 years before you have to renew it. By then this new system should be working better without allowing others to get all of your data without your knowledge.

I just got mine so I can start traveling for work.

Too late for us, I should've applied for one by September. However, for those worried about others hacking the chip, it contains no information that isn't stored in some other format on the printed passport.

So they say, granath, so they say...

In my country there was a row over the fact that the secretary under who'se responsibility this comes lied about what was and/or could being stored on the chip! The extra things were nothing alarming, it was more the thing that either he didn't know himself (bad communication within his dept.) or that he thought to get away with not informing the public totally. I guess he thought to prevent unrest but he achieved the opposite.

The end of the matter is that it is very easy to store extra data on the chip, the capacity of which is large enough to hold a goodly amount of data!
