Default micheal whelan

I know that Micheal whelan is not a writer but I love his work anyway. He did some of the covers for pern. The girl who heard dragons, Atwop, rop, dd are a few of the covers. I ordered my old checks with his work on them.

I love his work, too. Especially his dragons.

I also love the cover art he did for another book--Alan Dean Foster's Nor Crystal Tears.

I am not sure if it's a regional thing, like whether you get the UK or the US covers, but I really do not like Michael Whelan's covers! I was brought up with the UK covers, mostly Steve Weston's artwork, and those are the covers I prefer, my favourites being the Red Star Rising, and All The Weyrs of Pern covers

Yeah, I'm the exact opposite. Weston's dragons are (to me) full of holes. But I do like his scenes.

Exactly. While I in no way think that Whelan's dragons are true to Pern, I like them best of all, with Les Edwards and Rowena Morrill runner up. I like that Whelan's look practical, I especially love the wings, and Anne has said that she prefers Whelan's wings more than any other.

I just cannot STAND Weston's, (with exception to Dolphins of Pern, if that dragon weren't there, I LOVE the rest of it) to me they look disproportionate, stiff, fulla holes and those horrid fins! I don't understand why everyone compliments only Weston for his scenes from the books, almost all of Whelan's depict scenes straight from the books as well, except maybe Dragonsdawn.

I really like Michael Whelan's artwork, both on his Pern books and others. Especially his covers to the Bantam editions of Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice and Royal Assassin. The third book has a cover by Steven Youll, and I like his dragon, especially the wings. Otherwise the dragon doesn't look very Pernese, but it could IMO pass better than Weston's holey winged dragons. Youll's style's very similar to Whelan's, I didn't realize the last book didn't have a Whelan cover until I checked, although on closer inspection the style's somewhat different, but not enough to distract you.

I know I'm not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but, I also find the ones Micheal Whelan does. I really should get stock in a few book stores companies.

I love Micheal Whelans, art work and his Pern dragons are lovely, but even they are not true Pern dragons, in my opnion, and according to what is laid out in the books.

The drawing in the "A Gift of Dragons" by Tom Kidd, are fantastic, and closer to the true look of the Pern dragon.

Best. Science. Fiction. And. Fantasy. Artist. Ever.

Whelan's dragons will always be my image of Pern's dragons for one simple reason: he painted dragons that could actually fly.

Of the artists who are prolific in covering Sci-fi/fantasy books, I have a tossup between Whelan and Boris Vallejo. Both seem to have either read the story, or were told about a specific scene in the book, and they put it true to the story. All the Weyrs cover that I recall was as perfect as I could think. Same with the cover of Friday Whelan did, and the covers of the Rawn books I have read. Overall if I see a book whose cover looks interesting and was done by either I'll buy that book. I don't need any more information than that.

Actually, Friday was one of Whelan's misses. Turns out Friday has dark skin in the book.

Semi on-topic...or off-topic...I've always been surprised at the artist who did the Masterharper of Pern cover. Darn it, forgot his name--but he's more famous for his darker art. It's a lovely cover, but I keep laughing to myself because I know that artist is typically far too gory for Pern.

::tears hair out, trying to remember the artist's name::

It's not Whelan or Kukalis or Boris or Rowena...

::googles::

BROM!

Here's his page.

See what I mean? I can't believe he did the MHoP cover...hehehe...but he did it darn well.

Your right D.M....his work is very, very different from his beautiful *Masterharper of Pern* cover.
