If it is possible having her in a crate during the drive home. If not a crate then I would sugest a doggie seat belt. Either way having a crate for her when you get her home is a good idea. A crate can help house train her & keep her safe while you go out.
If you put it in an out of the way corner it can act as a "cave" for her.

Thanks, mawra, a crate would have been a good idea, except I only have a small car and it wouldn't have been big enough for her But I did invest in a doggie harness, which was really useful.

Good news is, I collected her yesterday

The journey up to London went really well, she behaved herself like a model of a dog who loves travelling in the car It then took her less than an hour to make herself at home in the house, although I did have to sit in her bed with her for a while before she would really believe it was OK for her to be there

I think I've struck oil or gold, depending on your perspective She's clearly been in a house before, and seems delighted to be in one again... She's had a good sniff at everything, but only touches things I give her - bet most of you with children would wish they were as good She's toilet trained and quickly learning to respond to her new name and to basic commands

*crosses fingers* long may it last

Sounds like she appreciates being rescued and doesn't want to do anything to mess it up. The two of you are off to a great start. I suspect there will be a few bumps here and there but she's a living thing, not a programmable robot. And that's a good thing.

It's so good that you two started off so well. She sounds like a dear, pity she was in a shelter.

No real facts, other than that she was brought in by the dog warden and wasn't claimed so ended up in the shelter

She's visibly gaining in confidence by the hour I took her to the Vets yesterday to have her stitches out and she behaved beautifully, stood there as if to the Manor born The vet said she's still a little chubby, but that'll soon come off as it's due to lack of exercise rather than overfeeding.

We suspect that her previous owner might have been elderly and either died or gone into care, and she was then pushed out to look after herself So far she's thoroughly enjoying her new life in London, as am I

Like most animals, she hates fireworks And with Bonfire Night coming up, there's already a fair number of them being let off. I really hate to see the way she cringes when she hears even a distant bang

Yet it's surprising in some ways, since a fully blaring fire-engine with all systems go didn't merit more than a prick of an ear and a yawn

My pup Bob fell asleep along side my wife's lawn chair on the 4th of July while we were setting off fireworks. He was supremely unconcerned, while my sister's German Shepherd was off cowering in the house.

I think most dogs dislike fireworks. For one thing, with their sensitive hearing, they probably hurt their ears. You're lucky about her reaction to the fire truck. A lot of dogs howl when they hear sirens.

Emma also hates fireworks. When she hears them, she runs away to the place we first show her to sleep, under the table in my room. It's hell for her at New Years times.
Luoi, on the other hand, doesn't even notice when they bang. It all depends on the dog, I guess.
