Default Our Cruise

I took my wife on a cruise for her birthday (it's been in the works for over a year.) We just got back home on Tuesday, and I put a few shots I took of the weather in the photo concrit section. I asked, and Hans said he'd enjoy seeing some more of the trip, so here we go.

We went to Cozumel, Belize City, Costa Maya, and Nassau. The first three have commercial areas set up just onshore. Of course, there's guided tours you can take, but there were circumstances that kept us from doing much more than just barely away from the dock areas.

Leaving Port Canaveral. This was almost the last good weather we would have for two days.

Kind of like this.

Here's the Carnival Glory, our ship, all 110,000 tons of her, at Cozumel.

Wife and I sightseeing in Cozumel.

A beer and a Harley t-shirt in every port. This was both from Cozumel.

We didn't get a lot of pictures from Belize. This is our "tourist shot".

My wife on the dock. Almost lost in the haze on the horizon is the Glory. It's about 2 or 3 miles out.

This brings to about half-way through the cruise. I'll get some more up tomorrow.

Looks great and the ship is stunning! You both look like you had fun. The picture of you in the chairs at Cozumel is great, although all are nice. I love your grumpy tshirts

Are you a beer lover, Draco?

The Grumpy shirts are in self-defense. My wife is a Mickey Mouse NUT, so I chose a Disney character of my own, and there's no dwarf named Sarcastic.

And yes, I do enjoy my beer. It was too high-priced on board for the stuff they had, and tea was free. So in Cozumel and Costa Maya (both Mexico, BTW), I had a Dos Equis. In Belize City, Belize, I had their National beer, Belikin, while in Nassau I had a Kalik Silver. Had I had more time, I'd have found Kalik Gold. It would have been a Quest.

I'm not bothered at all with motion/sea sickness. Even with the size of the ship (953 feet long, 110,000 tons, 13 decks), I felt confined for the first 2 days...... I'm just that way...... but at least the weather wasn't boring. Our dining room seats were looking directly out the "rear windows" of the ship. It was pitching fore and aft and rolling side to side quite, shall we say, actively, and I thought it was entertaining during dinner to watch the horizon tilting and going up and down. My wife, on the other hand, didn't do quite so well (and the cruise was all for her ). It added a new degree of interest to playing Blackjack in the casino, too. Sitting there, watching the dealer, and the room suddenly tilts this way, then that way. Lotsa fun!

Here's some more pics: Backing up to Cozumel for a moment......

I've mentioned the size of the ship. Here we are in front of it at Cozumel. Notice the size of the people next to it. Yes, I felt confined.

Obligatory fun shot at Cozumel.

Obligatory "I'll hold the camera myself" shot.

Taking a tender boat ashore at Belize City, Belize. Off the stern of the ship you can see some of the tenders. Each holds at least 100 people.

The dock at Belize, taken as we were leaving on a different tender.

One thing i said I wanted was a new hat. This one in Cozumel wasn't it.

I don't want all this to be overwhelming, so I'll add more later on.

Functional, too. it keeps exhaust off the rear areas of the ship by moving it out to the sides. If it were a traditional funnel, airflow would swirl exhaust down behind the funnel.

Well Draco...what you have said is more than enough to keep me off a cruise ship. My husband wanted us to go on a cruise a few years ago...but I wan't so keen on going, and now I know why...YUCK...I don't like the idea of spending the whole trip hanging my head over the railing of the boat.................

Oh, come on! That's what they have drugs for!

It started getting rough again before we got to Costa Maya. When we got there, we had steady 26-28 knot winds, gusting higher. The side thrusters were good for 28 knots. It took the captain and crew 2 tries, but we made it. They couldn't just come up to the dock like it was L-shaped, because it was more like T-shaped. There was a projection that extended out past the part we tied up to that extended out at least the width of the ship, so they had to almost parallel-park that big thing. I have trouble parallel parking my Taurus wagon, so what they did was phenominal, as far as I was concerned.

Dock area @ Costa Maya. Yes, the color's off a bit.

On the plaza at Costa Maya. This is the new hat, bought at the port with the strongest wind.

A hard day's shopping and sightseeing. New hat works well.

The rocky beach at Costa Maya, wind still doing well, hat doing better.

On the pier at Costa Maya.

Two days later, we docked at Nassau, Bahamas. There, we entered the bay, and it was almost like the Captain said, "Boys, the sea's so calm in here that this would be too easy, so let's back the ship in! So they spun it around and backed it in to the dock.

I liked Nassau the best. That's all I'll say for now.

Aahh the memories of having breakfast on the QE2 (well I think it was the QE2 but this was when I was a kid and mum has the photos of it - if she's still got them but as I don't have them in my hot little hands, I'm not 100% sure of name of cruise-ship), nearly 30 years ago (cripes that makes me feel ancient mama dinosaurus according to junior ) and yes I can remember it because my papa bear took me there. My parents didn't think much of us when we started chasing all the coins, streamers etc, the passengers threw off to the kids that appeared out of nowhere when the QE2 left port Thanks for the memories

Still rather interesting photos and tales told - wouldn't mind going on a cruise, myself now.....

Nassau, the Bahamas:

Self-explanatory.

The public beach. We walked there from the ship.

This was a pair of hotels on the outer side of the bay. The bridge-looking part of the one on the right is actually a suite, and supposedly rents for $25,000 a night.

The outer beach. There were a lot of expensive-looking houses there.

"After a hard day of sight-seeing and shopping, I enjoy a cold, refreshing Kalik, the Bahamas favorite beer!" Think it could make a commercial?

Jube: I remember doing a canoe race round the old Queen Mary (the one currently in Long Beach CA) when she was leaving Southampton with tourists chucking coins at us.

It wasn't THAT hard as the Cunarders (and other big ships) were limited to 4 knots in the Solent.

Come to think of it, that was in 1961!

What a fantastic cruise and a great collection of photos. How long did the cruise take you altogether?

I can't imagine maneouvering a 110,000 ton ship up to a narrow dock in bad weather.

2 days driving each direction, 7 day cruise, 1 day in Florida with relatives.

The cruise itself, left Florida Saturday afternoon, arrived Cozumel Monday morning, left Monday afternoon, arrived Belize City Tuesday morning, left Tuesday afternoon, arrived Costa Maya Wednesday morning, left Wednesday afternoon, arrived Nassau Friday morning, left Friday afternoon, arrived florida Saturday morning. In retrospect, I would have enjoyed more time in one or two places on a shorter cruise.

The crew was amazing. I have trouble parking my Taurus wagon. You can see the size of the waves in some of the Costa Maya shots.

We did have one strange recurring thing; we kept coming in to find animals in our cabin.

One day I shot an elephant in our cabin.

How an elephant got in our cabin, I'll never understand!

What was funny to us was the television stations. There we were, in the middle of the Carribean, and the only "local" station was Fox network out of Denver, Colorado. We had some rough seas, they had 12 inches of snow! I gotta wonder.
