Default Anneli's New Toy

I mentioned last week in another thread that I treated myself to a netbook Completely mad, of course, I can't really justify it as necessary, but it's so cute and so convenient and I just love being able to lie in bed at the weekend surfing the internet

Mind you, in order for that to work out I had to buy a wireless router and connect it to my current laptop which functions as a fixed PC and the complications were mind-boggling .... Well never mind, it now works

I was up North at a Conference last week and, oh, the joy of being able to a) type rather than write notes; and b) sneakily surf using the wireless network kindly supplied by the Conference organisers when the presentations were really boring

Finally, the little darling operates on Linux and OpenOffice, so you hit the "on" button and in the blink of an eye it's up and running I use Firefox as my main browser at home anyway, so there was little new to worry about there, and OpenOffice is so intuitive that if you're used to any version of Windows and Microsoft Office, it practically does what you want without you having to ask

So, anyone else addicted to a netbook?

What a cute little compy And the linux is a bonus! I suppose it comes with all that's necessary, apart from the open office, like media player and such, book reader? No hassle with any of the software, e.g. installing plug-ins for Firefox? As you said, word processor, spreadsheet and browser are the most important.

No, no netbook here, if I want small I'll use the PDA which also has WLAN. With so many computers and laptops in this house we'll probably won't buy one, although, after I got Marjon a laptop she did say she'd like a PDA too...

Your netbook really looks lovely and I hope you'll have lots of fun with it!

Knowing you I have to ask... does it have a name yet (other than little darling)?

Congratulations on your new purchase. Hurray! I've known quite a few astronomers browse the web when listening to boring presentations too. I have also seen some really keen ones searching the net to find out more information about the subject being spoken about so they can ask some really cunning questions.

Funnily enough, I was looking at netbooks earlier today with a friend who was looking for a portable laptop. They are amazing little things - extremely light and portable. But in the end she chose a small 12 inch laptop because she needed a keyboard large enough for editing documents at home.

Do you find the 8GB of storage space a bit restrictive? Since your netbook has USB ports, you could add one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freecom-Toug...3003175&sr=8-1 (There are smaller ones available.)

And the fun of having something that's updated too , it's been interesting going through the "dialogue" for your new compy. We brought junior one at a garage sale and now he wants to update to something newer but he has to wait until high school. 2 whole years of him being frustrated that he can't play all the games etc that he wants to play. *evil grin coming from Jube, regarding junior's frustrations as she looks over my shoulder - waves at everyone - says the new compy looks cool* Although a spare computer here would probably be an advantage as we both use this one.

Your new toy looks very cool.

Eventually, I'll probably get a new computer. For now, my wonderful Dell is still serving me well into my last year of college. It is fun to see how much more advanced PCs get as time goes on.

Oh what fun...Congratulations on a great buy. I've already seen these before around Christmas, and think they're really little cuties. I can imagine that your indeed having lots of fun taking it with you wherever you go...kind of like having a pet only you don't have to walk it, or clean up after it...and it could even sing you sweetly to sleep if you told it too, and probably turn itself off when you started to snore...whoops breathe evenly in sound sleep............

Not for what I want from an ultra mobile computer I'm not interested in playing graphic-intensive games or loading up tons of software. Nor do I want to stream videos or music. I was tempted by - and finally succumbed to - the lure of a very light-weight (less than 1 kg) machine which fits in my shoulder bag, allows me to get online and check e-mail wherever there's a wifi spot, and lets me work on Office documents on the move without having to unplug/disconnect my (much heavier) full-size laptop which I use as my main PC at home And most importantly - the price was amazingly right at the time I bought
