Default Steven's USA visits

At long last I have finished processing all the photos I brought back from my 2 visits to the USA and have some time to post them.

The first set of pictures come from my visit to Baltimore at the end of September 2010. It was a work trip, arranged at short notice, and I arrived only a few days after Hans and Marjon had left!

I must say that Cheryl was an absolute heroine. My outward journey went wrong from the beginning, when Edinburgh airport was evacuated by a security alert. I missed my flight to Baltimore and was put onto a flight to Washington DC, not knowing how I was going to finish my journey. Cheryl met me at Washington and drove the 150 mile round trip to take me to my hotel in Baltimore. I would have been absolutely sunk without her. And she picked me up on my one free day and took me sight-seeing in Baltimore harbour. So thank you, thank you Cheryl.

The amazing Barnes and Noble, Hard Rock Cafe, Power Station building:

Baltimore is famous for its crabs, hence this harbour side feature:

We stopped for a few minutes to watch a street entertainer:

I liked these little dragon boats:

And the most important photograph of all. Borders Books in Baltimore had all three of Elizabeths books. Hurray!

Before I could fully recover after returning home from Baltimore, I was travelling yet again across the Atlantic. This time the trip was my fault - meeting up with Elizabeth after her contest in Seattle finished and staying for a holiday. I was unlucky with the weather. Elizabeth arrived to sunshine and clear skies, but the weather deteriorated into 11 consecutive days of fog, rain or cloud, corresponding exactly with the 11 days I was there. But here are the pictures I did manage to get during those brief periods when the clouds cleared enough.

This time I have to thank Mike and Tania for looking after us and entertaining us during our visit.

My first view of Seattle from the ferry in the rain:

The Space Needle:

Panorama of Seattle from the top of the Smith Tower:

Pike Place market in Seattle:

Pike Place Fish, and the amazing fish throwing show:

Great pictures, Steven

Isn't Baltimore's inner harbour area fantastic and the Barnes and Noble shop in that old power plant is great! Drat, I wanted to take those little dragon boats as my next Where in the World

I think I see an acquaintance in one of the beach photos! Never having been to Seattle I found your pics very interesting and the autumn colours are stunning.
Zeke has a devilishly naughty look to him, does he have a character to match?

Actually, Hans, Zeke is a complete softy! Very affectionate and cuddly. Lovely cat. He's not really Mike and Tania's, they are on the move all the time and would never take on an animal while that was still the case. Zeke belongs to a neighbour, but prefers them whenever they are in town!

Hans, Sorry for blowing your WITW idea , but if you had submitted it Cheryl and I would have guessed straight away. I'm sure you have other amazing and unexpected pictures from your travels that you can spring on us when we least expect it.

Seattle is a great place to visit, but I would advise you to do it during the summer. The autumn is the rainy season, although if you're lucky with the weather you do get the bonus of the beautiful autumn colours. I didn't see much of the city - just a couple of days walking in the rain. The highlight was the trip up the Smith Tower (after we decided it wasn't worth paying the premium to go up the Space Needle to see clouds). It was well worth it. You get just as good a view as from the Space Needle for less than half the cost. Elizabeth saw the city in all its glory in the sunshine before I arrived. (I ought to label my photographs "Sunless in Seattle".)

Yes, I should have said that Mike and Tania belong to Zeke; not the other way round.

Nice photos Steven. I have not been to Seattle yet either so seeing those was great. Come to think of it I haven't noticed being at the Baltimore Harbor either although I have been in Baltimore.

Blondmom, the next time you're in Baltimore try the water taxi - especially if the weather is good. The best routes are the long distance ones (the short distance hops only take you a few hundred yards). You get to cruise around the harbour all day for the price of one bus fare.

Seattle seemed a really interesting city, although I only saw the downtown area. Pike place market is fascinating in all weather conditions, and the array of produce on sale during my visit was really impressive.

Samsara, the funny things is I didn't actually go into that book store. I only had limited time to see the whole harbour area. But it's something I can do next time I end up in Baltimore. I think Hans visited that book store, so he could tell you what the inside is like.

Here is some of the local produce at Pike Place Market:

And just to show the weather wasn't a complete wash-out, we had the occasional lucky break. This is what the Olympic mountains are supposed to look like (photographed out of the car window). When the weather is changeable these mountains can appear and then be hidden again in minutes - by the time we reached the next view point they were gone.

Mike and Tania's local pizza restaurant - the best in town, and a lovely place to warm up after visiting a windy boat dock.

Fantastic photos Steven...glad to hear that on this trip you were able to have Elizabeth there with you.
Not a bit surprised to hear about Cheryl's saving your trip...we have known for a while that she is the one of the very best of friends to have around.
We've never been to Seatle either...but after seeing your photos it looks to be a very interesting town to see.

If Elizabeth is off running around the planet again...that must mean that her next book is all but ready to go...runs off to check her site and see whats up!!!

Hi Lady Maelin,

As well as Seattle, there is some really spectacular mountain and beach scenery up in the Pacific North West. If you have enough time you can also take a ferry excursion over to Victoria in BC, Canada.

Unfortunately the opposite is the case. Elizabeth's editor has been sitting on the new book for weeks.

Steven

Great Photos.

I especially like the ones of Seattle and Haystack Rock - they brought back lots of happy memories (I visited those places in 1981 ).

Thanks. What took you to that part of the world in 1981? Do you notice any changes?
The Columbia Towerwas only started in 1982, so that's a major change.

I last visited Lands End in 1980.

When I was young I used to write to an American sailor - long story. He left the Navy soon after I started to write to him and I visited him there (the plan had been to take a trip to Spain ).

He lived in Portland and his parents lived in Seattle. In fact I spent a few days with his sister who lived on Bainbridge Island and took me around the area (including a quick trip to see Chief Sealths grave in Suquamish).

I have been to Cornwall but never Lands End.
