Default My visit to Leiden

I was in Leiden (that's in the Netherlands) last week. My husband and I are moving there at the beginning of next year, and I wanted to have a look around the different neighbourhoods. The weather wasn't too good, but it wasn't too bad either, so I managed to take a few pics. I guess I should have taken a couple of photos of the typical dutch houses and the canals, but as always I came home with a camera full of pictures of animals.

Leiden is actually full of animal life. There are lots of grey herons and coots near the many canals. We saw bunny rabbits on the lawn outside of the university, and a duck crossing the street with her ducklings. Just a 10 minutes walk from the center of town you see fields with horses and cows. I'm very much looking forward to moving there.

Thursday we took the bus to a bird park called Avifauna in a town called Alphen a/d Rijn near Leiden. You can see the photos from the bird park here:

Ah, a classic windmill shot! I took one of those when I visited Hans five years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing your full collection of pics, a bit later on this morning hopefully!

Kath, is the position also at Sterrewacht?
My husband is going to be working with Yuri Levin there.

We've bought a teach yourself dutch book with cd, so hopefully we'll be able to speak a bit dutch when we move. I think we will be understanding dutch in no time, but speaking a language is always more difficult to do than understanding it. When we visited the museum in Leiden they started speaking dutch to us, and it actually took 5 seconds before I realised I didn't understand the lady, 'cause I understood enough for it to feel familiar, but sadly not enough for me to get the full sense of what she was saying.

I forgot to mention that we decided on not visiting Keukenhof after all. Everybody we talked to about going there, said that because of the warm early Spring, most of the flowers were finished blooming, so we were advised to wait until next year in all it's splendor.

You'll be hard pressed learning Dutch. As soon as people notice you are from abroad (and that they don't speak your native language) they'll try and talk English

Give me your msn and you can have learning chats with me!

I am jealous and happy for you Nerfermiw. I would love to live there. It is so green and beautiful just from those few pics. I can not wait to see the rest. My present home, the concrete jungle known as LA, is losing its charm. Even so, I have about 7 years of school before I can go anywhere.

Danish people tend to do that to to forreigners that try to practise their danish.

Hans, I'm not using MSN; I'm a devoted Yahoo!-user.
And besides, the microphone for my pc doesn't seem to cooperate very well. The times I've tried to use it, I had to yell for people to hear me. I've tried all sorts of settings, but have now given up. And as it is now, I can call all the neighbouring countries for free, so I can chat on the phone with my mother in Denmark or my girlfriend in Amsterdam for hours without it costing us more than the phone subscription.

When I get better at Dutch, I'll maybe try to write something in the Dutch subforum here.
And I'll of course try to greet you in Dutch when we meet in September.

OH Nef...I love your photos of Leiden now I want to move there too. You take the very best photos I've seen in here. I am so in love with the Snowy Owl that you took photos of... he is sooooooooo beautiful!!!

I hope that you take some more photos of Leiden when you finally get moved and settled in. How about some of the everyday parts of the city like... the local Grocery Store, Cinema, Department store or any other parts of the town...would be lovely to see. Everyone always takes photos of the historical sites or the famous ones...but never the everyday ones...!!!
