Let's see...what can we tell from this picture? I'd say it's in Holland...and may be a government building...or a school or prison....

It's in The Netherlands indeed, though not in "Holland" as such (silly foreigners)

No, it's not that one, although the build (with a central part and two wings) does look a little like this one.

I don't know what it is but it is lovely to look at, if it is a prision then they are certianly neat and clean in your country Hans.

Perhaps a Royal Military establishment. It has what looks like guard stations at the entry.

Hmmm... it reminded me of the rijksmuseum, but it's not that.

Is it in Apeldoorn?

Het Loo, IIRC.

Anyway, I guess whoever gets #17 starts the next thread, right?

Uhm, we didn't exactly work it out that way, don't want anybody feel theyneed to post one while they are merely guessing along. So, people best sgould indicate if they want to do one, like Cheryl said.

And you are right on the royal palace being Het Loo, always have to chuckle when I pronounce it as The Loo

This was the palace that the old Queen Wilhelmina (queen 1898-1948), the grandmother of the current queen had as her home and grew up in and it was built by William and Mary (the Glorious Revolution pair). It is a museum now and I do recommend any visitors to my country that happen to end up in that part of the country to visit there!

The special thing about this palace for me is that they have Pern in their garden Look, it is Sagittarius or Rukbat al Rahmi (although I also have to admit it is the half of a set of fountain ornaments)

The gardens are a perfect example of formal gardening in the style of the time of William and Mary. Here's part of them, looking back to the palace from the folly crescent / columned arch:

The stables of this palace, of course built and been in use during the time horse drawn carriages were the normal mode of travel, are still in use as the royal stables and (especially for Anneli) I'll post a pic of part of them. This shows about a quarter of one wing of stables and there are two wings.

During my last visit I noticed that the Dutch nobility in the neighbourhood are also getting a chance to have their horses lodged there some extra income for the queen maybe? A major part of the stables hold a kind of carriage museum and part of it holds classic cars, all used by the royal at one time or another.

And I must post this, maybe Mary of England planted this one herself? Oh, I love these old and gnarled trees (maybe because my name translates as "from the tree"?)

The horses must have a lead rope from their halter to the front of the stall? (Surely they're not all so well behaved as to simply stay put!). I've never understood the appeal of formal gardens -- I much prefer rambling ones bursting with flowers.

I love the tree. It'd make a lovely Ent.

Yes, you can just see a red headcollar on the second horse in from the right.

Beatiful gardens. Wouldn't mind visiting them, but like Cheryl, I like wild flowers better. And that tree is interesting.

Wonderful garden, wonderful tree
As for favourite type - formal or informal - well, I tend to find my favourite is the one I'm looking at at the time!
Like my favourite McCaffrey book is the one I'm reading at the time
