Our son texted at 12:30 "Happy New Year", which naturally woke me up. Back to sleep and Jenn & Mike came in from the comedy club they had gone to at about 3 am. Awake again. That's enough "excitement" for me! Also good knowing everyone was home and safe!

We are scheduled to have snow tomorrow and Friday. We're ready. Santa brought me lots of warm knitted and crocheted scarves and hats from talented friends (Pat, Aranel and Dawn).

Hubby is now a puking Hubby. Kibby has a fever, not sure if it is the flue or the thing going around.

We were going to have Christmas with my sister today. We did not go Christmas eve because everyone up there was sick. We canceled today because Kibby is sick. I hope the kids don't catch it from her.

And BEER, Mawra. Don't forget the beer! Those were the biggest three sellers yesterday. Don't know about today, because I didn't get there. Someone pushed my car into the garage door with someone else's car this morning. Fortunately, my car is alright, the garage door has one panel caved in, (small one) neighbor's car is safely off the road... no idea about the bleached female who took a corner in a snowstorm without looking/knowing where she was.

We had maybe 6 inches of snow. There's still a fairly strong wind blowing it around and the current temp is 8 (-15C). They are saying tonight we will go down to -10. I filled all the birdfeeders. I feel sorry for them but most manage to survive. All the schools are closed and my husband decided to stay home.

I'm glad your car is okay, AnnMarie and I hope it 's not too much work fixing the garage. Do you know who caused the damage, other than a random bleached female? Video/license plate number?

Right now it is 2 degrees out. We have good central heating. I just hope those who are homeless are able to get to shelters. This is not a night to be outside!

Having a nice cup of Lapsang Souchong tea. It was my best friend's favorite tea so it brings back a lot of memories.

I think tomorrow it will be time to take down the tree. It's been lovely but now it's time to look ahead to the new year.

The up stairs is not going to be pleasant to see in. still no heat. We can not use all the insulation we have. It is not the right size. I may try to sleep downstairs tonight. Not sure where. Kibby will be on one couch. Robin on the other.

Did they put up any insulation? If what you have is the wrong size (not sure I understand that) can it be returned for the correct size? I know you have said you have an electric blanket and I'm not sure how much that costs to run. I've always felt that down comforters keep you just as warm with the added benefit that if the power goes off you are still warm! Just a thought.

Priscilla, insulation usually comes in 2 widths, 16-inch, for walls, and 24-inch for roofs That's the distance between the wall studs and the roof joists. Maw has what I call a 2-story mobile home, I think. It's a prebuilt house that is delivered on wheels in 2 pieces with the roof "collapsed", and the dormers trailered in separately. The second story has no wall height, just the center height of the peak of the roof. When on site, the roof is raised, the halves are joined, and the dormers are installed. Standard price only includes the second story unfinished. Standard spacing on the roof joists is 24 inches on center, so if they got 16-inch wide batts of insulation, it's too narrow to install. If it were a true two stories, with 7 or 8 foot walls and then the height of the roof, you could put in a ceiling then blow in insulation like I did on my addition. Her house will have a peaked ceiling, not flat, with the batts of insulation having to be installed between the roof joists.

Thanks, Allen! I am stilll wondering if what they have could be exchanged? I do know about cold houses. Our old house before we did some renovating, had single pane windows and "storm" windows that had to be installed in winter. When a strong wind blew the curtains would fly out quite a distance from the wall. There was also an old style blown in insulation that settled over time. That meant the second floor had practically no insulation when we started working on it.

Unopened batts can usually be exchanged, but first you have to be able to get them back to the store. The 16 wide insulation may be rolls. They're about 2 feet in diameter and weigh next to nothing for their size..... maybe in the less than 10 lb. range. But 24 wide insulation is usually in bundles or batts that are a bundle of strips. The bundle is about 4 feet long and a sort of rounded square about 2 feet on a side. The material is actually paper glued to fiberglass. This is wrapped in plastic. Once unwrapped, the strips unfold to about 8 feet X 2 feet X 6 or 8 inches each, paper on one side, fiberglass on the other. Can be itchy stuff to work with; gloves and mask are prerequisites.

Maw's problem may not be so much exchanging for the right size as it will be getting the wrong back to the store and the right back home, and dealing with the uninsulated upstairs in this cold spell in the meantime!

Our roof is pitched at a different angle than most to allow more room upstairs. The isolation we have is what was left over from when the house was built. So we don't know where was bought.

My idea was to lay the insolation across the roof beans and block off the area we are not using. It is not done that way is what I was told, so no one will do it.

Good for you. It's insulation. There must be a way to get some of it up there. It's not like it's holes in metal that have to have a certain size and style of screw to work. If it's too wide, can't it be cut - or if not wide enough put one and then part of another? No it's not perfect and probably ruins the building person's feng shui, but you're the one who is cold!

Laying the insulation across the timbers, rather than between them, gives BETTER insulation as you do not have cold strip from the uninsulated timbers.

I knew someone would come up with a solution. That makes a lot of sense. How do you keep the long strips of insulation up, though? Trying to get a complete plan of action for maw here.

All you need it a hand staple gun. Oh, and the strength to squeeze it if it's not electric.

DO NOT staple to anything but the beams. Watch out for electrical wires.

Actually, a 2X6 insulates surprisingly well, running through the thickness, that is, the 6 inch thickness, as they're set for beams.

For a sloping ceiling I'd recommend carefully removing any plasterboard or sheet-rock lining, inserting the insulation and nailing it in place using timber battens (say inch-and-a-half by half) and then re-fixing the boarding. Because the battens are hidden, they don't have to be very craftsman-like; and the extra cavity increases the U-value and reduces the chances of problems with damp.

It is completely unfinished. no walls to worry with. We have three lights on a cord. Two of them will be easy to move. The last one is all the way up on the cross beam of roof. That is blew out a while back and we have no way to reach it.

Get Kibby or several "someone's" to HELP you. After all, having insulation in that upstairs should help with the temperature of the whole place. Warm air rises and it sounds like right now it's going unobstructed through the roof!

Wish I were closer, maw. I've gotten pretty good with insulation over the last 3 years.

So what is everyone doing to beat the cold? Me I am sleeping down stairs tonight. I have moved the goat's water so it is under Mom's bedroom window so I can give him with out going out side. I can feed him there also. He has a good house with hay. The other can come & go as the please.

We have got one cat, Oden, who is bored. She is trotting around the house looking for trouble. She is a thinker, she always has been. She looks around plans her moves then attacks. So far she had killed both couches, a chair, swatted our largest cat when he walked by. Nothing is safe.
