Default joking?

Somebody is selling a copy of 'Nobody Noticed the Cat'. It is the limited edition so a buy-it-now price of $150 is not too far out sight.

But they're wanting $100.40 for post & pack? What they heck are they packing it in?

That is silly. Does it stay the same if you pick a delivery address in the US?

That claims to be the UPS 'Expedited' rate to UK (I usually pay around $15!)

UPS quote a rate for a 5lb book package to the UK, with 48hr guaranteed delivery, package tracking insurance and signed receipt : >$200!

So perhaps the $100 is reasonable?

I'd rather pay normal postage.

Our postage rates are going thru the roof. Regular letter postage is going up two cents in May.....again! ARGH!!! So this postage doesn't surprise me at all.

But your regular domestic and international rates are still well below the European rates! Now you get to experience a little of what we already have for years! Not that I want you (and me) to, but I just had 3 books sent to Cheryl (within US) Media Mail for $3,28 and that weight would have cost me more within the Netherlands! The rates in the US are near resembling the Euro rates (but I think your average salary is much higher!)

Rates within the country are not unreasonable imho but international... The Netherlands abolished their media mail rate! So if I send books to the US is costs the same as any other thing! An international flat rate envelope for about $12. No sir! Even if I send Kibbie a package of plastic bags (which weigh next to nothing) I pay the premium price!

It'd be lower if they'd let UPS/Fed Ex compete for first-class mail rates. (And I ship my stuff UPS, generally. Though their insurance costs more--ground service to CT insured for $1200 ran me $30.)

A 1kg (or 2.2 pounds if going by metric) is just under $35 to the UK from Australia and that's in Aussie dollars and for a 2.5kg parcel, it's about $74 and that's via airmail. So $100 in US dollars is a little rich for my liking.

Actually that reminds me, I did purchase an item that had a huge mark-up on p/h from the US to Australia. I was just about to pay for it when I noticed the big p/h fees quoted and promptly sent a message to the seller that I wanted a real invoice with a decent p/h not some dodgy rip-off. He promptly changed it. So it pays to ask questions...

Some US sellers are claiming that e-bay limits them to $5US per item for p&p. So they then say that there'll be an 'add-in' of, say, $25 to cover the real costs!

I discovered that too with selling books on ebay. They limited it to $8 per book (well it works if the book is under 500g - most of the ones I sell come into this category but some are well over this limit, especially hardcovers which can weigh up to 1kg++). I found that by stating in the item description that it will be posted in a 3kg prepaid satchel and changing the p/h scale to suit, ebay will let me post the parcel to anywhere in Australia for the correct p/h. Otherwise if I don't do it (blonde moment strikes back ) then I'm screwed myself with wasting my time and money on ebay. I learnt that quite quickly about the same time, my darling mother found herself in the same situation so we had to work it out between us, the why's/how's etc of putting the correct p/h in so that ebay wouldn't tell us off all the time. I've been very good up to the present moment and yes I do learn from my mistakes

It is on Aussie ebay. I can't say the same for the US version as most of my overseas customers find me as an International seller. I sold my first set of flights to Ireland today but most seem to go to Canada or America or Australia. The Europeans are only just discovering me.

It's the same on US eBay. At least, I've noticed for Media Mail and First Class - I can only charge $4 tops, to ship in the US. (For international, I have a caveat that I need to recalculate.)

For hardbacks I charge $4. For paperbacks I charge $3. For multiple book sets, I find that normally $4 covers it. If I know it won't, though, I will put in the poundage, and have the shipping set as specific to the winner's zip code, and I add in another $1 for handling purposes.

Works out fine for me.

Uh...I wouldn't use UPS. And considering that I work at (not for, at) one of their main sites, that's saying a lot. (They actually work for me - I'm the on-site rep for my company.)

UPS has lost more packages for my company in a year than FedEx has lost in all the time I have been in my current job role (which is since 2002). Though that was in 2006 or 2007. They have gotten better. A little.
