White Klah, to drink or not to drink...

How many of you have followed the receipe in The Dragonlover's Guide To Pern (either edition) and made up a batch of "klah" - and what did you think of it?

I like it, and I have a jar of it sitting on the kitchen counter next to the coffee jar, and hot-chocolate tub (and the three hundred types of tea that my partner had to have).

What are your thoughts?

The recipe sounds too bitter to me. I don't even like regular coffee, so that's probably not saying much.

Right then, for Myt and possibly others, here is the recipe that appears in the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern for

An Earth rquivalent to klah

Mix together:
  • 2 tablespoons sweet ground chocolate
  • 1/2 cup dar cocoa
  • 3/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon dark instant coffee crystals, ground to powder
  • small pinch of nutmeg
Use two or four teaspoons of the mixture per cup of boiling water. Stir well. The klah should be thick, much like hot cocoa.

N.B.
(Pernese) Sweetening comes from cane or sugar beets; so you can use regular, refined sugar or even cubes. No honey because bees did not survive on Pern.

As an alternative, American Gramaphone (Mannheim Steamroller) sells a cinnamon hot chocolate mix that is very good, and already sweetened. It can be used in coffee or by itself.

I've never tried it, as we don't usually have several key ingredients around the house.

If I did try it, I suspect I'd be like F'lar and add lots of sugar. I'd also only drink it in the morning, as I'm quite sensitive to caffeine.

But I'm happy sticking with cocoa, which I occasionally add cinnamon to!

When, on occasion, I drink coffee, I put about a tsp. of cocoa powder and a big spoonful of splenda sweetener in it. I call that klah. I always forget the cinnamon though.

would it work if I doubled the quantity, perhaps, all I can taste is cocoa!

As-written, it's too sweet. I make it with unsweetened cocoa and only a little granulated, but even then it's really a bit...I don't like the texture or the flavor (even when I add cloves.) I'd rather have plain coffee with just a little milk or half and half if I'm feeling indulgent. (I use about half of one of those little single-serve half and halfs.)

Though today I did a 'mocha' at work--a serving of our single-serve coffee (it's real coffee, it just comes in a thing called a k-cup and is a single cup) into about half a packet of Swiss Miss No Sugar Added (splenda-sweetened--the only artifical sweetener that's not utter crap taste-wise), which was pretty good. If you used the coffee flavor we have called 'Pumpkin Spice' it would probably be a pretty good simulacrum of the DLG recipe, if a bit sweet. (Sucralose is several thousand times sweeter than sugar, so even a little goes a long, long way.)

I can't imagine drinking something as syrupy as the DLG recipe every morning! (Of course it disgusts me that you have to specify at Dunkin Donuts that they DON'T put in the sugar and they dump in way too much creamer.)

Hey, someone else who knows what a k-cup is! When the office where hubby works (and I used to) got a Keurig machine, it was such a hit it got nominated for Employee of the Month, and it was included in the year-end summary of important things that happened to the company. Hubby told me the other day they're finally making a residential line of machines....

OMG, isn't the k-cup the greatest thing? I love it! At the restaurant at school, we had two coffee choices, regular or decaf, we had to brew an entire carafe, and then toss it after twenty minutes because it was stale. At work we always blow peoples' minds when they haven't seen one before. "Yes, it's real coffee, not instant. Yes, we have all those flavors. Yes, we even have Chai." (We have....Columbian Supremo, French Roast, Pumpkin Spice, Mountain Blueberry, Hazelnut Cream, French Vanilla, Decaf, French Vanilla Decaf, and Chai. Blows people's minds when they order.)

Heh, I want Tassimo. It does coffee, tea, espresso, lattes, hot chocolate, cappuchinos...you have to buy their pods, and it's wicked expensive, but it would be soooo nice...

I need to get married, just for the gift registry...

lol!
I tend to buy fairtrade coffe- it is just about possible to drink a large caffetiere (about 1 litre I think) of java at once-though it does sned me a little high!
but- I did see some coffee bags the other day and I was tempted.
It's real coffee in something like a teabag!
brilliant idea but I've only seen it once, though I know they've been around for years!
back to the Klah- what chocolate do you use- I used normal drinking chocolate and that wasn't too sweet, especially mixed with cocoa!
I haven't got a sweet tooth- milk I don't mind- though I tend to use plenty of milk with instant coffee cos it needs it-but I can't stand sweet hot drinks!

Edith--if those are the Folgers' 'coffee bag' things that you dunk in a cup of hot water, they're crap. They taste like instant. If they're pods, you need a machine that brews them. (Which I want, but I can't blow that kind of money right now, sob.)

I'll just stick to the cafetierre for now! It takes time-but I like the smell as much-if not more-than the taste.

Edi,
I have made it with
1. a dry single serving of instant cocoa
2. cinamon, nutmeg and sugar mixed in a shaker
3. I brew a hazelnut coffee
mix in half of the cocoa serving into the coffee, with splenda to taste, and then sprinkle on the cinamon mixture on top.
Walla, "KLAH". Its realy good that way, but if you don't like sweet thick drinks, then you should pass on the "Klah".

I didn't like the DLG version of klah very much, especially since my family doesn't by instant coffee, ever. I always use this recipe when I make "klah":

2 tablespoons ground coffee (I prefer hazelnut)
2 tablespoons unsweetened chocolate powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon (freshly ground is best)
1 pinch of nutmeg

That should make about two cups. You brew it in a coffee press, with boiling hot water for best results. Let the dry mixture steep for about 2 mintues before straining it out in the press. Add sugar if you like.
I find this miture to be the best balance of chocolate and coffee tastes, and it's good and bitter without the sugar. I'm not sure if it's quite spicey enough, but you can't add any more cinnamon than that without it getting really sludgey at the bottom.

A chocolate substitute. Some diabetics have to use it. Most health food shops stock it. You'll probably have to buy it as a bar and melt it into the drink.
