Twitter? (Or how I learned to love 140 characters)

Anyone else here on Twitter?

I actually resisted signing up for so long, because I was so absolutely certain nothing of worth could be said in 140 characters and I'd be buried in poorly spelled tweets. I swore it was just a fad.

Turns out, so long as you choose who to follow wisely, 140 characters is fine for putting together a sensible sentence. And for me, it curbs my long winded rants. I can sometimes be quite pithy! Which is a miracle. Hell's frozen over, the whole works.

Does this only work on a "smart phone"? I am now like you were, not interested. I follow my friends on Facebook, and I'm not interested in following the "tweets" of celebrities so I can't see the point.

Twitter works from any browser. Lots of people use addons, which you've probably heard about, but you don't have to. I don't...I just go to the Twitter website to check on things just like I'd do to check another forum or blog.

News often breaks on Twitter prior to hitting blogs, so it's good if you follow news on just about anything.

I suppose I technically follow some "celebrities", but my celebrities are authors, so...I get to watch a lot of fun stuff like writers talking about the process and to one another as they go about their writing day. It's an insight. And I also have "regular" people friended, and much like other social networks they'll throw up a photo or whatever.

You *can* set up a smart phone to use Twitter, but then again, you can also send email and browse this forum on a smart phone.

I use it mostly for advertising and networking. (Of course I use facebook for advertising and playing free games.) I don't really follow anyone because I'm that interested in their saying something, more like things like anthology calls for submissions, and networking with other etsy sellers.

It's good for people posting links.

I never thought of it as being creepy, H.S.! Maybe it is. I only have 43 "friends" on my Facebook, so I don't feel like a whole lot of people are reading what I write. Some people write what they are doing in "The Worlds' Longest Thread", or maybe in a "What are you doing" Thread. Some prefer not to share any info except with friends by email or phone. I do censor myself on Facebook, but I do that everywhere on the web. I don't own a smart phone or want one. Each to their own, I say!

Each to their own is right Cilla...as I do know plenty of people who all but live on *Facebook*...they love it. Lord I don't think my Grand-daughter's would know what to do if it disapeared. I don't think they would know how to talk to each other face to face anymore, without a cell phone or the internet chattery's...LOL

Kibby and Hubby play some of the games on Facebook. They are hooked on a pioneer thing now.

You do have to be carefull on what you post and who you be friend. Kibby did a speach a couple of years ago on internet safty. She can only befriend people that are approved by me
or Hubby. I don't get on Facebook. My sisters do. Whenever a new friend appears on Kibby page they tell me and I find out who it is. We have tested her. She will ask before she befriend anyone.

Not 'everyone'. Selected people of your choice. And, bizarre as it may seem, you even get to choose what info you put up there. Gosh.

Yes, I am on Twitter privately as PernMuseum but more often for the foundation I work for, as Humanitas_Rtd. I like it as a medium. I don't like facebook and am belonging to that select group and special group without a facebook account. I am avoiding it like the plague and actually, active on the internet as I am, do not like that kind of social sites at all. I vastly prefer fora and blogs as you have much more and better control over what you do and display and, most importantly, share. No, don't come to me with the excuse that you decide what to share on facebook or like sites; I mean what the organisation behind the website does, their policies and motives. Facebook is getting to much influence imho, in my circle of friend they especially hate the spotify-facebook connecting and the chances that brought.
But to each his own and I do understand why some people like it. For me, a good search engine is the essential thing of the web.

This. If anything drives me off facebook, this is what it'll be. But at present, it's still a good way of keeping in contact with a wide circle of friends, much like sharing a school. You don't socialise actively with everyone, but you can see what others are up to in a limited way. I can see myself cutting back on what I share, but it's too much of a monopoly to walk away from easily. And that's what makes it scary...

I'm not fond of facebook either; I only really use it for the games. I put almost nothing on it. Facebook also keeps changing its security policies.

Twitter is far closer to the blog experience, albeit in "micro" form, if you use a LiveJournal or one of its clones with the aggregated "friends" page. You choose who to follow, you choose what screen name to use, you choose what to share.

I too don't have a facebook profile (or twitter, for that matter). I was a black sheep in highschool and everyone looked at me like ''ok, you don't have a face profile. Are you feeling alright?'' I have nothing against people who use them, but I myself don't think I will be getting on any of them in the nearby future. I only see them as worthy because there's a profile for my university where students can post lessons and advices. I might try that. Someday.

I like being able to play the Zynga games on facebook, us the IM feature to talk to my mother when I'm at work and she's on-line. We're going to (allegedly) get a facebook for the museum when I can get my boss to actually sit down with computing services (sure, probably right around the time they update our website, too, with the three pages of things I gave that need to come off the education section alone....) And post pictures, that sort of thing. I've vaguely reconnected with people from high school and have a lot of dance 'friends' on there (actual friends and people it can't hurt to friend, ie NDCA judges. Can't hurt for my name to sound familiar when they see it on their score sheets.)

Perhaps your idea of *EVERYONE* and mine are different.

Most people I know of have different levels of trust and closeness with their aquaintances and friends and don't let *EVERYONE* of them into their personal lives.

Facebook doesn't seem to have different levels of admitance...if you allow admittance to anyone other than your closest friends, like new aquaintances you've made...then thats where I meant *EVERYONE* can follow your personal life.

and yes...Facebook has had several public security problems...where at least once that I know of EVERYONE was able to see EVERYONE elses personal page...GOSH !

Actually, I think you can now divide your friends into lists and decide which lists you want to share stuff with. But I do understand what you mean and know a number of people who don't want to have anything to do with facebook.

Blow twitter! I got txt'd today for a roll of toiletpaper! My grandaughter was stuck in the bathroom. I had to cycle three miles armed with their spare key.

Yep. You can lock any and all posts to a group, one person, yourself (I've done that posting a link from somewhere that I want to remember but don't want to clutter people's walls with), you can create a page and have a separate list of people who like/follow that (I have one for my etsy and one for my blog)....

The only annoyance I have is every change to default privacy settings is done automatically, and if you don't want to do it you have to go in and change it, rather than leaving your settings alone and just allowing you to opt in if you want to the new function. But as far as showing everything to everyone--uh, it shows what you put up there yourself. (And really, if you are scared of your friend tagging you in an embarrassing photo, either lock it so no one can tag you except you or don't do things you'd be embarrassed to be photographed doing.)
