Thumbs down Del Rey discontinues Pern pages

Not really new anymore since this happened some time ago, but I still think it's a shame and a pity and hope it isn't a portent... I knew anne is growing older and less productive but...

This is the news blurb I put on my site when it happened:

Quote:
Del Rey, an imprint of Random House Publishers, has discontinued their pages dedicated to the Dragonriders of Pern and Anne's other books. The Pern Museum and Archives regrets this choice but wants to thank Del Rey for all the years they provided them. Luckily they still offer the DRIN (Del Rey Internet newsletter). Want to receive the newsletter: click here.
I sent them an email conveyeing my regrets (condoleances?) but never received an answer... Did anybody of you react to the loss of these pages and attention for Anne?

I sure wished I had archived those pages (didn't expect them to go any time), they had some good info, nice data and good quotes.

I was shocked and annoyed. Once upon a time I had copies of those pages, but I think they were lost and not replaced before Del Rey pulled the plug. there were several essays by Anne among the pages that provided good research data!

Given that Del Rey had failed to keep their Pern/McCaffrey site updated (when the pulled the plug it still referred to Pegasus in Space as the latest book, which was published in 2000), I suspect they pulled the site along with a few other author sites because they weren't prepared to put resources towards updating them. I guess only Star Wars and Manga rate as being worth the money to maintaining a sub-site.

Instead they do now have a nicely comprehensive listing of official author websites. Hmmm, or at least they did - all I get now is a 404 error by following the link on Del Rey's main page to author sites, and also when drilling in the Author Desktop page. How pathetic! This isn't an amatuer site by a long shot, and I expect better of them.

Honestly? Never looked at them. If for some odd reason I needed information about a Pern book, I could get it at annemccaffrey.org. I guess they figure there's not a huge demand for it, and most of the information would be available elsewhere on the net.

Most of the info was available elsewhere on the net even when the pages were up, though I agree with your earlier remark Anareth... let's face it... I'm just afraid Pern the publishers think is dying a slow death.

What's worse, I think so sometimes....

Not dying, just temporarily subsiding a bit. People are so interested in HP type books just now. Still, I think that though some of Anne's books can be considered dated they still provide a good read and there will continue to be an audience (though possibly smaller) for them.

If you look at it realistically, the last purely Anne full-length book was Freedom's Ransom published in 2002. Since then there have been several "jointly-authored" books, eg Acorna and Dragons' Kin, but no full length solo ones

I know that the final short story of the Ninth Pass dealing with the last Threadfall is more than halfway written, but it's not clear when that's going to be published, although the most likely candidate at the moment is in a third Legends at some point... But there are no full length solo Anne books on the horizon That said, she has two Pernese collaborations with Todd lined up, plus the further Acorna books with E A Scarborough. But it's not the same ...

The lady is eighty-odd years old and a Grand Master. I say if she wants to rest on her laurels and leave the full-length novels to others, she's more than entitled.

I agree, Anareth. I've gotten the feeling in the last several years that she'd really like to retire - but writing is one of those professions that others don't really expect you to ever retire from.

Hans, have you contacted Del Rey to see if they still have those essays in a file somewhere? You could post them here. Or find out if Anne has them.

Maybe they should make some of Anne's books into Manga. Then there would be more fans and they would not have got rid of the sites.

As I recall at least two of them were credited to Anne - one about Robinton, and the other I don't remember the subject...

Thanks, Cheryl! The second one didn't work for me but I enjoyed reading the first one. I think I may have read it before but (if I did) it was years ago and it was still nice to see it again.

Oh dear.

Sadly, it's obvious that Anne's way past her prime and as far as I'm concerned she's entitled to rest (IMO her best post-1995 book is Pegasus in Space). Not that I wouldn't love to read the conclusion to the 9th Pass, even as a short or a novelette.

C_ris and Sandi's remarks above. You know me, I'll call a spade a spade. And in any case, this site or thread isn't just for praise, critical opinions are allowed too.

Even if she never writes another word, we'll have plenty of old stories to enjoy.

Those remarks were made in July 2005 (and Sandi made other since), so I really did not understand, still do not actually, why you chose to make that remark now. But never mind, its not really important. I was just confused and surprised.

I'm still confused. What did I say that warranted such a harsh "critical opinion?" All I did was agree that if Anne was wanting to retire she was entitled to do so. That's hardly the same thing as saying she's past her prime.

I guess I inferred more from your post than you put in it Sandi. I interpreted what I read the way I wanted to see it, not necessarily what you intended when you wrote it. Apologies to c_ris too in advance, in case he feels the same way you do...

I almost never look at the posting dates on threads or particular posts, if there's a thread with a new post I may read it and post in it. Sorry for the confusion.

Just to be clear, I think it's a shame Del Rey discontinued the Pern pages, it was a great resource.

I've saved them too. The links in Favorites. And I remember listen to a copy of MHvP one very sleepless night from Brilliance Audio (r) unabridge on tape with L/R speaker tracks.

Only player I had a the time was in the living room, it was a cool night the moon was out and its was the night before it (the book) had to go back, so taking my headset, so I wouldn't wake up my folks my pillow and blanket to keep warm, I was listen to last tape and fell half-asleep mom found me there and told go to back to bed you can finish it later, would have to re-request it for it was a non renewable intera-libary loan which had to go back the very next day.

I had the last part to go Ruatha Hold and the death of Fax. Mom had gone back to bed, I finished and when back to bed.
